  • Hello CZcamsrs! A special hello to my fellow PRELOADERS! For those of you that aren't PRELOADERS yet, hit that subscribe button and become one. In this video, I cover right turns and left turns from a stop, more in depth. This is a very important exercise to practice because if it's not mastered, you could ride into oncoming traffic, or onto a curb or any other bad situation that could've been avoided. I also discuss how exercises #1, #2 and #3 all tie into this exercise (#4).
You may be asking yourself, who are PRELOADERS?
    Who are PRELOADERS:
Subscribers to this channel who are dedicated to being proficient in slow speed motorcycle operation.
    What does PRELOAD mean?
    PRELOAD:
Engaging the throttle to raise the RPM’s (revolutions per minute) above idle and holding the throttle there, with the clutch pulled in (no power to the rear wheel, “in reserve” “PRELOADED”). This process will make power to the rear wheel available to the rider immediately when the clutch is opened up. There’s no need for the rider to be concerned with twisting the throttle for power because it’s already PRELOADED.

I've been riding motorcycles since I was 16. I'm 56 now. I finally signed up and took the beginner riding course to get my endorsement when I moved to Washington state many years ago. I was shocked at how much I had been doing wrong for years and years. I was 40 when I took that class. I own my own set of cones. I keep them in my tour pack and practice whenever I have a free moment. I would absolutely fly to Georgia just to take a private class from this gentleman. It would be money well spent. I just wish I owned a bike in Georgia .😂

Secondly, you are not afraid to admit the value in a technique other than your own. I appreciate your videos Robert.

“Motorman” has a book about setting up the cones. I happen to copy the diagrams and gave them out to my MC Members. If your going to buy the buy the ones from Amazon I bought about 50+ cones well worth it. At NYPD Highway Patrol Wheel School which is located in Brooklyn, New York we used the big cones and it happens to be a Certified Air Strip so we had plenty of room. NYPD it’s 12 feet between cones, the key is practice practice practice!

don't worry about repeating yourself. drilling repetition into my brain has been a colossal help. i've been riding on and off for years with no issues because i could muscle my smaller bike around. i just bought a 550 pound ducati 1260 mulitstrada enduro that is 34 inches tall. whoa.....what a difference! i dropped it 4 times in the first week and had to go back to school on slow speed maneuvers. i've learned so so so much here about combining the throttle, friction zone, and rear break as a "team". i'm in the parking lot practicing your lessons and i'm a lot, lot, lot more confident and on my way to controlling this beast. can't thank you enough for your instruction!!!!!!

love the video, bro!!! specially the way to break down each step and explain the ins and outs . I'm so impressed I subbed your channel. when I took the MSF bike class the instructor made it clear to do the exercise SLOW, he said anybody can ride fast because it's easy but riding slow takes skill and practice, that's why I practice in parking lots just like what you show here. I want to be a SAFE rider as well as a GOOD rider, . My wife of 39 years wasn't to crazy about me getting a bike at my age but after I brought her to the parking lot with me to see me practice her worries went away, I also bought safety gear, ,helmet, jacket, boots, gloves, etc. now she's cool with it and help me pick out stuff for my bike. my son is grown and out the house now it's time for me to do something special for me, bought a 2021 Honda rebel 300 , thank you for using your time to help and instruct all of us watching how to be a better biker, it's much appreciated, gonna practice real early in the morning before I go to work when it's peaceful and quiet outside. I work at a national fitness gym chain and also been working out since I was a teenager which helps me handle and hold the bike up at times when it started to lean.

Your style of instruction and demonstration has suddenly unlocked what Jerry was talking about, but I wasn't getting, like 45 years after high school; I finally understand algebra! I've been riding over 50 years, and I would love to attend your course some day.

Hey Robert high respect for you brother for wearing the uniform and now putting in time now to help riders out there with your knowledge and experience! I’ve been applying some of theses slow riding techniques and feel really good about them. Now o have my wife in a parking lot and worked with her two days for roughly a few hours. I have to mention she had never operated a motorcycle with a clutch before ever abs she never thought she could do it and neither did I to be honest but I was determined to teach her some of the skills you’ve shown and others like you on CZcams.
First day was getting a feel for the bike and finding the friction zone of the clutch and then got her to start walking with the bike until speed increased enough for her to release clutch all the way then come to stop and repeated for about an half hour or more. Long story short had her taking off using friction zone and a little throttle first day and no herky jerky at the end but smooth. Thanks for everything you do brother!

It's been 20 years since I've riden a bike. Just bought a Harley today and bringing it home from the dealership I suddenly realized how scared I was making these turns from a stop..I was really wondering if it was just because I was older now and just couldn't do it anymore...and frankly didn't even go back out on it again the rest of the day because I was soo nervous.. I found this video and it already made me want to go out and practice because I had literally forgotten all of this... cant wait till tomorrow now...thank you so much. Excellent video as usual. Very good point on discussing the weight of the bike. My bike is well over 800 lbs and sometimes I will use my bike for several days in a row riding a couple of hours each day for work and not using a car at all. Somewhere on or about day two I will notice that I am throwing the bike around in traffic much easier and smoother and the weight is not noticeable. It’s all about practice and is a perishable skill as you state regularly. Somewhere in one of your videos I thought I heard you say that the distance between the cones when doing the right and left turns was 6 feet, so that is what I have been practicing. Hard to do but I did it several times out of about 30 attempts! I see that the distance is 9 feet but I never would have attempted something like that in the past so thank you for your instruction and encouragement. Hope to meet you in person sometime this year.

You say, "Preload and keep it loaded." I want a button that will boost the "idle" to 1500-2000 RPM that will "keep it loaded"! My biggest problem (I think) is that while swinging the handlebars from side to side, my wrists twist and fingers move. Consequently, I can't keep a uniform throttle setting and, more importantly, can't keep the clutch where I want in the friction zone. Practice, practice, and more practice! Thanks, Robert.

    • @BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle
      @BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle  Před 3 lety +1

That's funny John. But you're right, practice, practice, practice. I also understand exactly what you're talking about. That's why I always suggest people give a little more throttle than necessary. So in case your hand moves the throttle in the wrong direction, you still have enough power in the reserve to carry you through while you get the throttle back to where you want it.👍🏾😊

People watching don't realize how hard that is what you were doing in the parking lot at the beginning. I had a KZ 1000 back in 1977 and I thought it was a big bike I think 525 lbs. I parked it in a barn for about 35 years and just bought a 2020 street glide special it's a beast. The experience I had I may as well forget I ever had a motorcycle and start over. Can I do the u turns and the cone course, no not without scratching up my saddle bags. I've put about 250 miles on it and now it's winter. I am going to take a riding course as soon as the weather breaks and probably the advance course as well. Thanks for showing this stuff main thing I've learned from watching you is to stop using the front brake so much.

Some un-named CZcams motorcycle "experts" have a very dismissive, insulting way how they go about "instructing" or critiquing. They are sarcastic and judgmental, as if they have all the answers. No one has all the answers. We're all on a spectrum of experience, trying to advance further.

Yes brilliant teaching I've learnt lots with his video's.
I would like to mention if I may that I have noticed many riders don't check their bikes over before riding them...sometimes riders have brakes hanging on for instance , they have no idea that the brakes are hanging on just enough to interfere with moveability or worse still they don't check their tyre pressures (tyre pressure is so important+when cold to inflate)..
I live in London GB Ride mostly in Surrey and to Dover...
Meet up with many riders but I seem to notice these very simple things, also chain lube is missed , chain adjustment poor on many riders bikes or just worn sets ...the riders have no idea ...what a help it could be if you could touch on these subjects please ....
    I am enjoying the videos
Thank you for passing on your experience to us all ...

Congrats on 10K subscribers. Thank you for another great video. You mentioned making another video and explaining it again, possibly in a different way, instead of just telling someone to go back to this video. I have to agree with you, that doing it again, is not a bad idea. Speaking from something completely different, becoming a private pilot. I did a lot of studying before actively engaging getting my license. I studied a lot from a lot of different sources. I found out, that you can hear something over and over again, and not get it. But then you hear the exact same thing again, but explained in just a slightly different way, that just makes it click. So I appreciate that you will do it again, just for the fact that it may click that time. And also you encourage your pre-loaders to watch other content. Knowing that it may help them. I think you are a wonderful human being, especially doing this just for the love of helping others. Now, if the snow and temperatures would just cooperate here in Michigan so I can get out and practice, would be great! LOL

Hooked on these videos. Been riding off and on for over 40 years, but took a long hiatus and realize I have lost a fair amount of the skills I had. Just ordered up some crash bars for the Vulcan Classic so I can practice some of these maneuvers a little more aggressively without the fear of damaging my bike. Said it before, but thanks again for sharing your knowledge, I appreciate it.

I know this is an older video but I want to say thanks for making them. I have a lot of issues with this topic because it is something I am working on now. I recently bought a '04 Road King and it is by far the heaviest bike I have ever owned. I'm disabled and haven't been very active so I'm weaker than I probably should be for the weight of the bike. I'm working on these skills as I ride until I get a little more comfortable. My biggest issue right now is my large feet. I'm working on getting the shifter levers and things I need to adjust for that. My other biggest issue is leaning the bike, I don't know how far I can lean without the bags or crash bar hitting the street. I'm getting better with that though. I need the front brakes checked possibly replaced and the clutch checked. I have a long list of things to get checked. I'm just waiting on the appointment for my service. I'm hoping I have the cash when that day comes hahahaha.

I have watched your videos for a week now, and practicing. I bought my first Harley Davidson, and it's a Electra Glide Classic.
I have riding experience, but still alot to learn! I have dropped it twice now, with my wife on with me, Embarrassing? YES, But I'm learning from it, And I Keep Practicing, I am getting better at it. My major fear is dropping it and not being able to get it fixed, money doesn't come easy , some have asked, If I can't afford it, Why did I buy it, Well, Just Like Lots of others, I Love To Ride!
Like you said, the weight of the motorcycle doesn't matter!
I bought my first bike at 16, i was Immediately Hooked, Now I'm 55, I Still Love It!
Long story short, I'm enjoying your videos, and learning, I live in Florida and if I could ride up and practice with you I would!
In the mean time. I'll keep watching your videos.
    Thank you

Get some Pro Guards for your engine and saddle bag guards. Also there are motorcycledropguards which have an added piece to protect your primary. I found out about these from Robin The Lady Biker. Also check out Jerry Palladino’s Ride Like A Pro channel. He shows you how to install them.

I agree with your preloader... my preloading senses are heightened. I watch EVERYONE and quickly say, "nope, his slow speed maneuver skills are low". It's either both feet down or grabbing that front brake. I even critiqued my earlier vids of myself. I yelled, "preload!!" on a turn as I was too low in the throttle. 😂❤ Amazing training, Rob.
