    Very helpful information. I'm closing in on five years playing and have never made my own reed - work and my time don't permit it - so I have found a decent commercial source, but sometimes those require adjusting. I'll be watching this over and over again as I get better at adjusting my reeds. Soon, I'll retire from my job (I'm 62) and finally have the time to make my own reeds. I sure love playing this instrument (as well as the English Horn) and only lament having not discovered this joy years ago! Thank you again for your You Tube channel and the information you're sharing with others!

    I feel that the travel test is genius!! And something many people like myself never considered. It helped me a lot to get reeds that respond effortlessly in the low register. 😊

    this video helped me alot in just starting out and the reeds that í bought were cheap and did not make my oboe sound verry nively or beautifully as other people has described it who knew that just a few changes could make such a difference

    To close the tip I found that if you close the end of the reed with your finger, spit in and suck on the reed, hold a bit, it will close. Worked for me, but hey I'm a cellist and playing oboe for fun.

    Really excellent explanation. How long did you play before you decided to try making your own reeds?

    It's a great video, but I do not hear the lower octave C in any of the crows. Even on headphones. ???

    Hello!
    I'm just starting out oboe,, what if you can't play the upper register yet? Is it still possible to test the pitch?

    This video is great! I am wondering, have you tried to scrape a European style reed ( German U- scrape, French Short- scrape )? I scrape and play a French scrape and am told my tone is quite warm and dark.

      Hi William, yes we have tried those reeds. We are focused here on making the American scrape reed, though.

    Apparently I need to get myself a better knife or something. I have a really hard time trying to shave any cane with it, and it just messes up the tip of my reeds. I don't know if it's something I'm doing wrong or if it's my knife. But I ruin a lot of my reeds because of my knife. Anybody have any ideas?

    What do you do if the reed doesn’t respond in the lower register and the higher register

    • @somethingtocrowabout1408
      @somethingtocrowabout1408  Před 6 lety

      Tess: For the lower register problem, try scraping more out of the back. For the high register, try scraping more off the tip.
