      @@TheGodExperiments Knowing Sam's sense of humor, I wouldn't be surprised if he went out of his way to find as much footage of left turns as he could, just for the joke of it.
      (On a more serious note, I wonder if there's more stock footage of left turns because you have more choices of camera angle and distance from inside the turn that way. Shooting from the left side of the truck also has the benefit of having the driver more visible. I'm overthinking this now...)

      If we think whatever map as a square grid, by doing one left turn first we should be able to get to any points on any route with only right turns regardless of our entry point to the grid, no? That's my guess.

    • @Artaxo
      @Artaxo Před 3 lety +12

      Well, the route they take is still an optimization problem, not turning left is just another thing to account for. Generally speaking, you have two ways of doing this: adding a restriction or minimizing left turns, along with distance.
      The first way, the program will search for routes without left turns. If it doesn't find any, it will try for routes with one left turn and so on... Depending on other restrictions, this could result in a 100 miles route without left turns being chosen, rather than a 1 mile route with 1 left turn. I'm sure they're wiser than that.
      The second way, you penalize any left turns found in a route. It could be something like, each left turn is worth 1 mile in the optimization result.
      I can't tell you exactly how they do it, because I don't know and they probably don't tell anyone. A great "traveling salesman" algorithm costs a lot of money.

    • @staomruel

    My dad is a UPS driver, and while this is theoretically true according to their routing software, a good driver will know how to work their route more quickly than the system thinks he can, and will often do that by ignoring the turn-by-turn navigation and making left turns when they "aren't supposed to" because they've worked their route enough to know how to get between areas most efficiently, and how to work any specific group of streets quickly as well.

    • @Gloworm17
      @Gloworm17 Před 3 lety +290

      You are very right. As an employee, I can tell you for certain, the left turn rule is a relic of the past. While UPS tries not to turn left as a whole, it will not go 2 miles extra to prevent turning left. Combined with your comment and left turns are much more frequent than UPS P.R. would have you believe. In the several years I've worked there, I have never once been told to avoid left turns, but I am preached to keep miles travelled down. However that may be.

Even the latest and greatest navigation WITH “real time” traffic is worthless when experienced drivers know alternate routes that incorporate drops on the way.

      @cymond Před 2 lety +1

      Agreed. I hate making "unprotected" left turns because you need a break in traffic from both directions. I will often turn right and then find a place to turn around. For example, I'll turn right, then find a place where I can turn left into a parking lot, therefore I only have to wait for a break in oncoming traffic (one direction instead of two).
      Or I'll go right, and then find somewhere to go in and come back out to a stoplight, which will give me the break in traffic that I need to be able to make a safer left turn (safer than trying to watch 2 opposite directions of traffic for an opening).

    • @creativecraving
      @creativecraving Před 6 měsíci

      If I need to pull off of the highway and turn left, I'll often go to the next exit and turn right. It makes it less stressful, and there's less traffic in my way. Two wins, and I don't even care which is faster because I enjoyed getting there.

    Having known this fun fact many years ago, I actually used it to my advantage once. I was waiting for a new gaming laptop delivery and knew it was arriving on that day. But, I was in an upstairs bedroom and the ups guy knocked and didn't ring the door bell. So when I saw the notice on the door, I was infuriated. But instead of waiting, I figured I'd use the no left turn rule to guess where the truck might be next, and fortunately I lived where there were a lot of apartments so no more than a 5 minute drive later at a different complex, I found the driver and managed to claim my package. Still have that laptop with me today, 7 years later.

    In the US, this really works out. Especially in cities. In general, traffic lights at crossroads are not really well implemented in the US. Two opposing directions get a green light at the same time, so you have to wait to turn left. This can take ages, so UPS is right on this.
    It is interesing to find out whether UPS also implements this rule In Europe, where they also operate. Crossroads in Europe (at least western Europe) in general have dedicated lanes for a left turn, with a dedicated traffic light. That traffic light should be set such that the car doesn't have to wait as long as turning left at an "equal" crossroads like the ones in the US.

    • @Egerit100
      @Egerit100 Před 2 lety +2

      Uuuuhhhhh... there's a lot of issues in the US but how traffic lights are implemented is definitely not one of them. Idk about you but where I am A LOT of intersections with a traffic light have a dedicated lane to turn left. Also how they do the traffic light thing is rlly on a case by case basis. Some traffic lights have (let's just use the cardinal directions as an example of what it would look like from a top down view, and also I'm going to refer to a "stage" as which cars go each time the traffic light changes) Stage 1. South going straight North and North going straight South Stage 2. South turning West and North turning East Stage 3. West going straight East and East going straight West Stage 4. East turning South and West turning North. And then the ppl turning right can turn whenever. Other traffic lights do stage 1. South going North and West Stage 2. North going South and East Stage 3. East going West and South Stage 4. West going East and North. (Not necessarily in that order) Idk what the issue with that is

    The UPS driver that does our pick-up every day has an interesting route to our store.
    We're on a fairly busy thoroughfare a block or two off a major highway in Houston, and Houston traffic is amongst the worst. Our road has 3 lanes each way and a 40mph speed limit (most do 50-55mph, even in heavy traffic). We sit on the corner of a minor cross street and there's a suicide lane in each direction.
    As a result of his route, our driver makes three rights to be able to cross traffic with a stop light instead of braving the traffic of 6 lanes of traffic.
    Every day, both the Orion system in his truck yells at him for not making likely the only left hand turn he's scheduled for, but then his supervisor gets to remind him at the hub when he turns in his truck at the end of the night.
    It's hilarious.

      I disagree. I have been thinking the same thing for a long time: how not to left: physically and political. If you are a driver, as most people are, you really hate to turn left. Not only inconvenient, wait longer at the current stop, but you are also likely getting red light at the next stop. And worst of all, you will likely make almost all left turns before you get back home. So, next time before you leave home, draw a path, make sure you always turn right. Remember this, you will have a happy life, I am not kidding. Now, politically, I was a leftist when I was a younger. But the older I get and the more intelligent I get, the more I think the left are evil. When leftist ideas gets in your head, you are done. I studied the travelling salesman problem as a student. Yes there are masses of potential routes for delivering about 120 parcels. But the vast majority of route combinations are obviously not optimal and can be eliminated immediately. So the problem can be simplified. For example divide the drivers delivery area into smaller geographical zones, say of 20-30 deliveries. Optimising the delivery route within a zone should be easy for today’s computers. Then all you need to do is sequence the zones, using the same or similar method. Solution should be close enough to optimal to make no practical difference.

    The system that UPS uses to determine the route of the trucks is called ORION. Most drivers hate it with a passion. It actually costs the company more in undelivered packages than it saves. But the company executives love the system because they don't drive the trucks or live in the real word.

      It is BEYOND stupid. I have literally seen the truck with my package leave my complex and go MILES away, only to come back at the end of the day, just to avoid making a left turn. Literal miles wasted. The algorithm will put all necessary left turns at the very bottom of the delivery list, as well. So if a left turn is required to get to your location, you will never receive a package before late afternoon.
