The worst part about Tobias is that the last trainer in the league didn't even beat Darkrai, which means that Ash could probably win the Sinnoh League if Tobias had never showed up.
Just goes to show how strong Ash is :)
he only showed up because writers had to think of something fast because they knew ash's team was peak and still wanted to milk the series so they basically made up a trainer that uses action replays, so basically the writers made ash get curb stomped by a action replay

Every Pokemon fan still remembers the day and place they were at when Tobias sent out Latios as his second pokemon, our joy from sceptile defeating darkrai turned into despair 😞 I was in my living room in shock. The writers of that season really surprised me didn’t expect that at all.

If there’s one thing I like about Tobias’ fight with Ash, it’s Sceptile being the only known Pokemon to KO his Darkrai. An awesome comeback for a fan favorite from Hoenn. Great job with this video!

I like how during his battle with Tobias, all of the regions Ash traveled through up to that point were represented, Pikachu represented Kanto, Heracross represented Johto, Torkoal, Sceptile, and Swellow all represented Hoenn, and Gible represented Sinnoh

Recently rewatched this episode and it once again enraged me how they decided to just create a literally unstoppable character whose only purpose was to make sure Ash didn't win the Sinnoh League. But it did give me a brilliant idea that would shake up his entire existence, and I intend to use it in my story.

I feel like the writers could have lessened the anger if they made Tobias start out with normal Pokémon and then revealed Darkrai and Latios as his trump cards. I imagine they could’ve made Ash comfortably beat his first 4 Pokémon while only losing 1 or 2 of his own, and then Tobias’ last 2 Pokémon could come out and wreak havoc. I think it would’ve been a nice and shocking surprise to everyone.
Definitely could have handled it better
I personally would have handled Tobias as a dark type trainer with darkrai being the last secret pokemon that wasn't revealed until ash fought him. Because he has a powerful tyranitar as 2nd last pokemon that destroys everyone. And ash being the only trainer that defeated tyranitar made Tobias to use his secret pokemon darkrai. I think this would have made Tobias a realistic character.

heracross using sleep talk and megahorn was by far my favorite moment from the battle. the 120 base power physical attack with stab damage and darkrais weakness to bug made sure that darkrai was weak enough for ashs other pokemon to finish it off. sleep talk alone on heracross was a genius idea and is pretty underrated imo

As a kid, I remember rushing back from school and watching the two-part episode of ash vs paul and being overjoyed and I was like hell yeah ash goes to the finals. Then this random dude shows up outta nowhere and ash still manages to beat his darkrai. Then the dude unveils Latias. I cried that day. NGL.
At least Sceptile got a nice sendoff
Even though he was just a plot wall so that Ash didn’t win the Sinnoh League I’d like to see Tobias return in Journeys, he has a lot of potential for a cool backstory.

And it’s because of this people started to abandon the anime and just went back to The Magna, Video Games, Trading Card Game and The Pokèmon Go app that shortly came after

He was literally only made as a convenient excuse for Ash not to win since the writers realized Ash had become so strong they wrote themselves into a corner.
that was their ridiculous mindset. truth is series couldve gotten so much better had Ash become champion, just like Dragon Ball improved massively after Goku finally won the Martial Arts Tournament for the first time with the subsequent King Piccolo saga. instead they just asspulled legendary abuser and a massively rebooted Ash in Unova right after. seriously, not only Unova seasons are TRASH but Unova Ash is literally the worst. nonsensical how he went from that brilliant Sinnoh version to being an idiot who forgets his Snivy is a female (therefore its Attract doesnt work on fellow females), forgets to bring more than 1 pokemon to a 3v3 gym battle and cant beat a guy 6v5 in the league.
its just a shame it took writers nearly 25 years and over 20 seasons to realize the main character achieving a goal doesnt neccessarily mean the series have to end there. by the time they did the series had already burned out and were way past their prime. Kalos was their last shot, specially given how brilliant XY series were. Alola and anything past that is just too little too late.

They didn’t write themselves into a corner. They planned this out and purposely did this.
Tobias was hyped up for weeks leading into the league, they did this cause they thought it was cool
Tobias must have caught other legendaries when he earn his eight badges and won the sinnoh league

entei and Lucario were confirmed alongside with Darkrai because they battled infernape buizel and Pikachu in the opening
Entei and Lucario was definitely his 2 more Pokemons. What I predict is other 2 might be latias and cresselia as they were like counterparts of latios and darkrai respectively

Just the other day, I was telling my friend about Tobias. To me, if they were going to have Ash lose in the league, I’m glad that they went all out and made him lose to a trainer who only is shown to have legendary Pokémon 🤣 For all we know, the other four Pokémon he had waiting were all legends, too.
Better Tobias than Cameron imo
This battle made me mad, not because Ash lost or Tobias' Pokémon, but because of the team Ash chose. Stakes were much bigger here, should've brought out the strongest ones (Snorlax, Tauros, Charizard, Kingler, Muk, Glalie)

I'm sure there's plenty of controversy around Tobias and his use of what's presumably an all legendary team but I kinda find him fascinating. I'd really be interested in seeing his back story and how he managed to find and catch so many legendaries. I also like how even though Ash lost at the semi finals it's established the runner up like everyone besides Ash lost solely to his Darkrai. So Ash actually could have been the true Sinnoh runner up, he was just unlucky to be matched up with Tobias in the semi finals. Being the only one in the Sinnoh league to actually beat his Darkrai was victory enough in my books.
I've honestly dug him, he was the only capable of beating ash short of the elite 4

Darkrai is one of the cooler dark types I've seen. Latios is probably one of the fastest pokemon. I'm going to say i wouldn't be surprised if Tobias has latias on his team on the down low.

I remember when i first saw this episode and i actually HOLLERED when Tobias sent out Latios. Latios was, and still is my favourite Pokemon of all time, so seeing it in battle was AMAZING.

I'm sure that after winning the Sinnoh League and defeating the Elite Four of Sinnoh, once Tobias battled Cynthia, his Darkrai would have been no match for Cynthia's Spiritomb since it would have menacingly laughed at the Dream Eater and Dark Void that Darkrai had to offer. Also, Cynthia's Garchomp sweeping through Tobias's Latios and other Pokemon would have been the perfect redemption episode for Pokemon Diamond and Pearl for Ash's defeat. I would have loved to see that battle honestly !
Seeing how Tobias wasn’t in Pokémon Journeys during the final tournament, must mean he either retired or died
To be completely honest.. Seeing that episode as a kid truly confused me. I loved the Darkrai movie and seeing its battle in the anime and Latios is one of my favorite legendaries, But having them both? This kinda makes me so confused as to the status of legendary pokemon tbh.. Like it raises so many questions? Are there multiple Legendary pokemon? How did Tobias even get TWO of them- this also stands for Goh.. I like him- But I don't understand him literally catching Suicune when there are people like EUSINE MAKING IT THERE LIFE GOAL TO CAPTURE IT. We seen a shiny one in the Zoroark movie and one in the Celebi movie. So are there multiple suicune's? idk. It truly confuses me seeing trainers own legendary pokemon like that
I would say that YES, there is more than 1 leyendary or Mythical of many of the lengedaries and mythicals (tho i guess many of them are unique, Kyogre, Palkia, Dialga, Giratina, Arceus, and many more).
This is true at least in the anime as we saw many cases of different legendaies appearing (Lugia with a baby, Regis that are captured but also wild Regis) we also have heard of Mythicals like Zarude (data says that THEY lived in a small pack in some jungle.)
I also think that the series continuity and movies one are not in the same universe. Ash never mentions movie events in the series like when he sees Lugia, Moltres, Articuno, Latias, Latios, etc again.
@@compucocina5567 But supposedly Ash does remember meeting the same Mewtwo in a movie when they met again in the anime. Though that's a very recent change.
When it comes to legendary & mythical Pokemon, the anime is really inconsistent with lore unfortunately
@@ProfessorAlexSilver I like to think there are more than one of each but they're still so rare compared to "average " pokemon that it still justifies their title of legendary
We have the same thought though. Many people owns legendary Pokemon but does that mean that it no longer exist or present to a specific region because a trainer already owns it. If there are multiple legendaries then it is not yet elucidated by the lore. If Pokemons are the only species that exist in the Pokemon universe does that also means that they use them as a source of food or there are also normal species adjacent to their universe?
Not gonna lie: Sceptile waking up and being the only Pokemon in the entire region to finish off Darkrai with just two Leaf Blades _screams_ "deus ex machina".
At least it was great narrative closure XD

And because of Tobias we have a weird thing where so far Latias has yet to debut in an anime episode only appearing in movies/specials, while Latios already has debuted.

It's difficult to say what other pokemon he may have had. I'm sure the other 4 pokemon are legendaries (event pokemon for generation 4). He was Shadowy (dark-darkrai), Mysterious male (psychic-latios), Hair that flows (water-suicune), wore dark red clothing with eyes of steel (fire/steel-heatran), Cold personality (ice - articuno/regice), the guy in the class that listens to rock music (rock-regirock). It's possible with his Green eyes (grass-shaymin) and Latias rhymes with Tobias and may have been in the team. If he had pseudo pokemon due to his sandstorm clothing (tyranitar).
Perhaps some Galarian Birds?
What a good theory man. I even saw a heatran in the Pokémon center when they went for registering for Sinnoh league. So prolly that was his. Who knows?😊

Would love to see the complete history of Ash's Krookodile

I always found the way Ash lost the league to Tobias to be a bit of a cop out. After all that development to beat Paul, he never stood a chance. I do like, however, that Ash, Paul and Tobias seemed to represent casual, competitive and hackers/cheaters respectively.

@@Alexgodofwar5662 Didn’t Ash have a chance to capture Zapdos in ‘Master Quest,’ and chose not to? It’s still cheap to use Legendaries, but imagine the shock on Tobias’ face when Ash sends out Zapdos to face Latios.
@@TheMan05555 he also had the chance to get latias but he didn't (not the latias in aim to be a Pokemon master)

@@BobaT0 Bro imagine, you have to rematch all gym leaders like you do in HGSS, then after defeating a more powerful E4 you are greeted by Tobias instead of Cynthia. That'd be amazing, revealing his full canonical team and overall being a nice surprise.
Tobias probably lost to Cynthia because she is still champion is Unova or he just never battled her
I was so hopeful that Ash’s Heracross could’ve defeated Darkrai, that would’ve been incredible

Man, I love Tobias so much. I don’t care what many think of him he was a badass (and still better way for Ash to loose than to a freaking Cameron). I would love to see him again or at least know his full team and what is he up to. So interesting character.
I really dug his design, I get that people were disappointed Ashton win but at least he went out with two major achievements by beating the trainers Pokemon

The ultimate plot barrier: the writers made Ash so good during DP that they had to stop him with a random trainer who used legendaries. Really says a lot about their pre-SM reluctance to have him win a league for sure.
and SM was kinda just give him the win so fans cab shut up and we never heard about him being the alola champion ever again

Honestly, I think it would’ve been so much better if Darkrai was his ONLY Pokémon (at least that he entered into the league). Ash struggling to win, needing all 6 of his pokémon to defeat such an overwhelming force would’ve made for a compelling finale. Tobias solely relying on Darkrai, not even considering that ANYONE would be able to defeat it, would have been a good counter to Ash who strategically has trained with him entire team to win battles. Proving that it takes more than raw power to become a Pokémon Master.
It would’ve been a great final clash of ideologies (kinda like how Paul was). Do you bet it all on a single legendary? Or do you, through training, strength, and growth, able to overcome all obstacles?

Wasn't the lore that there is only ever one Mythical Pokémon in the Pokémon universe but exceptionally rare few Legendaries?
While there is the few odd exception, such as Celebi being a Mythical Pokémon but since it can time travel dozens of Celebi can exist in the same timeline (though all the same/different incarnations of the same Celebi) and Entei, Suicune and Raiku being miscategorised as Legendary but are Mythical on account of their background history (which presumably has been retconned due to the appearance of multiple Suicune including a shiny variant in the anime and Tobias also possessing an Entei)... The anime takes inconsistent liberties that either directly contradicts or needlessly overcomplicates. Since Tobias possesses Latios, Entei and Darkrai, it can be assumed that Latios/Latias, Entei/Suicune/Raiku and Darkrai/Cresselia are no longer Mythical Pokémon. Since the legend of Suicune, Entei and Raiku hasn't changed, it can also be reasoned that even Ho-oh isn't Mythical now.
That might have been mentioned but the movies throw that into chaos
Darkrai never was mythical people just spread misinformation because darkrai appear 5 times in the anime (including 2 movies)

And also people down play Sceptile’s victory by arguing Darkrai was worn out from taking Mega Horn and rock smash BUT keep in mind Darkrai used Dreameater twice and 1 of those times 1Shot Heracross!! So Darkrai was probably if not at 100% At the VERY Least 80%

The man who defeated Ash in the semifinals in the Sinnoh League. Now I wonder if Tobias returns for Journeys should J. Michael Tatum come back to the Pokemon Company to voice him again? And furthermore does Tobias have any other Pokemon aside from Darkrai and Latios?

I actually like him a lot as well, though he definitely was underdeveloped. Anyone that beats Ash gets a ton of hate.
He was literally written in to prevent Ash from winning! All the other people to whom Ash lost were actually characters with personalities! Even _Cameron_ was better written!
Because he’s severely under developed and kinda just feels like a plot device so ash would lose the series.
Before Ash Vs Alain was a thing this was indeed the day i got depressed.
