My uncle bought a buck 110 in the 70's and lost it soon after. He went out and bought a second and as luck would have it he found the first, so he had 2. A few years ago he told me he was keeping the second one he bought in storage and had barely used it. He asked if I wanted it and I proudly accepted. I'm 28 and the knife he gave me almost twice my age. I'll keep it forever. Still good as new.

The explanation for the "missing" pin on the scales is for the following reason ...
That pin is the pivot pin for the lockback (spring) bar. The lockback bar is the steel bar that engages the notch in the blade tang to "lock" the blade in the open position, and to open the blade when the blade is in the closed position ( using the lock release thumb at the mid position on the top of the handle).
So this pin gets a LOT of movement and pressure when overcoming the spring tension holding that lockbar in position. One of the problems encountered in many lockback knives in the past was that when using exotic materials for the handle scales, the movement and pressure exerted on this pin would transfer to the handle scales. If the scales were made of a material that could withstand those pressures (wood, rubber, micarta, etc.) then no problem. But if the scale material was a bit fragile, then the pressure and constant pivoting on this pin would cause the materials to crack at this point where the scale material is at its thinnest by the edge of the handle.
Many old slipjoints and lockbacks that used mother of pearl, stag, or precious minerals for the scales, can be found today with CRACKS in that area of the lockbar pivot pin (much the same with slipjoints) ...it is a design flaw when using material that are hard & fragile for scale material.
SO...when custom shops are making knives such as this Buck 110 and using stag or horn or mother if pearl, etc. they don't extend the pivot pin all the way through the scales, thereby eliminating the possibility of cracks forming in the scales down the road. The pin is still there, but now hidden under the scales.
I hope this long and drawn out explanation will cover your concern over the "missing" pin on your knife.

I still have that great 110 & sheath...sent it to Buck for cleaning, sharpening & polishing. Looks as good as it did 50 yrs, ago!!

Beautiful blade. That would be nice if they offered a brushed stainless steel bolster option for strength and tarnish resistant. I have been collecting the 3 dot 1980-81 because that was the last year for 440C and has the thicker squared off bolsters. Also scored a 1982 with finger grooves and sent it in to Buck to have a drop point 420HC blade replace the 425M clip point for only $10. It came back looking like brand new from 1982! But if they ever offered a stainless steel bolster option I would have one made. I would love to score a 560 and 1980-81 111 some day. Damn that Trump one is cool as well!

So are you going to carry and use it, or just a safe queen? Buck knives are built to be used. As for using flippers, I have only one functioning hand and require a knife that is handicap friendly. There are plenty of American knife makers that make quality knives. I do agree with you on the foreign crap out there. I don't buy them because I don't support communism. I have a custom Buck Ranger that I love, carried and used. I miss not being able to use it.
