  • In this episode of RM Custom Shop, we show you how to create an intake for your R53 Mini Cooper S! Makes a great intake sound and only costs around $40 depending on where you get your parts. Noticed a huge increase on fuel economy (Now up to 27 mpg) with this mod and my other mod that will be coming in next week's video!

    I admire the DIY Spirit.
    But...
    Hear are some things to consider in your design:
    1) The air duct/Resonator you deleted is taking colder air from the front of the car and directing it to the air box, removing/deleting it means you no longer have
    access to that clean/cold air.
    2) The OEM air box has a hole that leads to the cavity that is behind it, the idea being that the cavity is removed from the engine bay; hence having lower temp air.
    this is why all after market air filters seam to attempt to maximize this idea by having a bigger hole in the sheet metal or having the air pod extend into the cavity.
    3) You want to isolate the air intake from the engine bay as best you can, there for a box design that goes over the entire air pod is desired. Also you want to take
    steps to close any and all gaps to prevent the air pod from taking in air from the engine bay.
    This is why I would dare say that most after market air intakes are a bit of a gimmick, specially the once that are a sheet of metal with weather striping on the top
    like the one you are trying to make.
    I think you would see better results if you leave it stock and add insulation to the ducts to keep the temp down and increase the oxygen saturation.
    Also it might be a good idea to increase the diameter of the OEM air box hole that leads to the rear cavity and add a duct that help it breath from that cavity better.
    Also I would add heat shielding material to the OEM box, there are thousands of options to pick from. (due some research)
    If you want to increase the flux of air into the engine, which is essentially what you are doing, just change the OEM air filter material to one with more flux (i.e. breaths better).

    Brilliant job, well done now you have a hot air intake!!

    Great work. You converted the stock cold air intake system to a warm air intake.

  • @walsheian

    More like hot air intake that will definitely lose you some ponys, I would suggest drilling through the plastic bulk head behind and also sucking in air from the honey comb scuttles below the window.

    The only mod I won't do is this one. The stock box is for a reason, put in a free flowing filter but keep the integrity of the box.

    Cold Air Intake... "CAI"..... Where is it getting the cold air from ? The stock system is supplied cooler outside air from the core support. This system looks as if it's sucking hot air from the engine compartment.... Am i seeing this wrong ?

    • @Ericfloats
      @Ericfloats Před 6 lety

      Yeah, there's a hole in the back of the stock intake wall that sucks air from the grill between the hood and windshield. Although I recommend increasing the size

    Why wouldn't you just put an adapter on the stock tube and attach a smaller cone filter to that inside the stock air box?

    • @RandomMotorsports
      @RandomMotorsports  Před 8 lety

      +Jason Magik You probably could do that but it wouldn't look nearly as nice! Haha

      Jason Magik I've thought about this method. What kind of adapter do I need to do this ?

    • @jasonmagik3209
      @jasonmagik3209 Před 7 lety

      mikep47 I think you would just need a short 2.5" OD to 3"OD (or whatever size pipe the filter allows for). Don't quote me on this though. You'd have to play around with it. They sell a bunch of sizes at most auto parts or hardware stores and they're cheap and returnable if it doesn't work.

    guys i have a question . I have alta cold intake part but i don't have that red box thing that surrounds the intake. is it safe to install it without the red box thingy?? also i currently have the JCW stock filter box installed , is it flat shape filter inside the stock jcw filter box or those roundish looking filter inside the box? Ive never got a chance to open the filter box cos i don't have any tools ( my car is R53 jcw btw)

    You said have maid mods that dramatically decrease the fuel consumption, but I can't find the related vids ;o)
    I see for exemple a little red filter on this vid(close to bypass valve?)
    May we have some information?

    Congratulations you've probably lost a few horses, are drawing in hot air from engine bay, have heat soak issues, and will draw in more dirt into the engine. Stay stock people, or get a jcw / John f box, orrangee still do them. They mod the original air box, add a larger external pipe ' 85mm'.

    I want to do this in my 2011 r56s the air box is in a different position but i am going to follow your lead with the heat shield because my biggest fear is making a HAI and causing harm to my car. does the whole cone have to be covered on the sides or just sides closed to the engine?

    • @RandomMotorsports
      @RandomMotorsports  Před 8 lety

      +Aaron Gordon Just the sides facing the engine, I'm not entirely sure if this will work on the R56 but something similar should!

    Don’t agree with this since your intake box is now only being supplied from the rear by the windshield drain. Route the stock charge pipe back into the bottom on the airbox...

  • @mikep47

    Did you have any issues with the oil light. Mine came on after I did this. After looking online I found some other mini owners who instAlled CAI and had same issue .
    Thanks and great video

    • @RandomMotorsports
      @RandomMotorsports  Před 7 lety +1

      No issues with an oil light, perhaps they capped off the crankcase breather hose instead of adding a breather filter. That might mess with oil pressure and create an oil light

    • @Tugboatpb
      @Tugboatpb Před 3 lety

      Is this true? My light came on as well but I never would have guessed it would have been because of the CAI

  • @kevinmusai

    • @RandomMotorsports

    • @jimclark4720
      @jimclark4720 Před 6 lety +1

      No you didn't. If anything, you increased the temperature by at least 40 degrees, minimum. You created a hot air intake... the filter is sucking its air from the hot engine bay. Jackass.

  • @EssexSilvering
    @EssexSilvering Před 4 lety

    Nice idea but your not getting any COLD AIR to your filter! ... The pipe you chucked on the floor is the pipe you still need as it takes the COLD AIR from outside and pushes it into your filter, hence COLD AIR INTAKE .... All you've done is created HOT AIR INTAKE! .... You seriously need to redirect your pipes!

I live in a tropical country. Please stop the hating if you havent done the test.

    Jackasses! Not only did you not reinstall the intake tube, but you didn't cut a larger hole in the cowl panel. Now, you're just sucking in hot air from the engine bay. Curious, did this lil guy overheat and blow up on you after you installed this?
