I'm getting a similar model, the R1855DB, because those are the ones available in black in my country. I already have the R2000DB for my TV and I couldn't be happier. Also had the R1000TCN for about 15 years, then I loaned them to my mother and now I can't get them back, lol.

I had to break these in to open up the high mids up a little, and after a few weeks things rounded out. These speakers are super flat down to about 120-150. They are pretty directional as well. I added a 12 and I was able to get a great, and full sound. They dont feel that pushed and I think the wood makes the response nice and tight. I think they are flat and not tuned for loudness, so that might throw some people off, but you probably wont forget your old altecs, however, these are VERY satisfying.

@@OK-Computer Using a spectrum analyzer and correcting for your room is the only way to hear the speaker properly. There are so many environmental factors that effect response. 1kHz to 3kHz, is what I am assuming you mean, and we are talking about a wavelength of 34-11cm or so, which also points to listening position.

Hi Morgan. Typically the Dac in a phone or PC is not very good at all for audio quality so I would say yes, it would suffer. To improve the sound quality, I would connect the PC or phone to an external DAC then out to the speakers via RCA. You can find cheap dacs on Amazon for $50 to $100.

I just bought these for the tv. I think they are very forward in the vocal which is great for dialogue but less ideal imho for music and yes, I agree the treble is EXTREMELY prominent and sharp. Listening to a rock track, it sounded like the Hi-hat was place front and center of the stage. I eq'ed the hell out of it just to try to tame the high end but to very modest effect. Overall, to be honest I am kind of disappointed in the sound signature of these speakers. That said, I bought them primarily for my HTPC and for movies so far they're great. If you don’t mind a little sharp top end, these may be ideal for you. Hope this helps.

Add a bluetooth FX Audio DTA2.1BT2 or an SMSL SA300 integrated amp. Throw another 20-30 for cables, from more than decent and reasonably priced brands, like Oelhbach, Dali, Supra, Norstone, QED, Clicktronic etc and you'll be much better off for an extra 40-50 euros more. No amp needed?? You still need an amp. It’s built-in with the speaker system.

@@sidsreviews1110 'not a review of the sound' what a dopey comment.
You can't truly review the actual 'sound' you can *only* really review via a commentary, and yours was excellent. 💯%
