Agreed most mainstream will like the BT better for the bass but after a while it muddies the mids a bit. The BTs somehow corrects this issue a bit making the bass more crisps and punchy, while also adding sound stage to the mids and highs (which are more detailed bu less sharp) the BT seems to have harsher mids and highs. Not sure if it was a change to both or just the removal of the muddiness that makes it that way. Either way they are superior version, plus a better remote, bluetooth 5.0 etc for $10 dollars more and the future options of adding a sub it's a no brainer

The BTS has flatter bass (less boomy) and a milder treble. It fixes the excesses of the BT. But the mids of the BT sounds way more natural compared to the BTS. The BTS mids is so hollow and lifeless. The bass and treble can be easily fixed on the BT's tuning knobs, but the lifeless, recessed mids of the BTS is difficult to salvage. I'm going with the original BT here.

Just opened and setup the R1700BT. Bought on sale for $134 AUD. My review is 3.5 stars. Good sound but the Treble control doesn't do much, and mine is not properly aligned (the groove at 12 o'clock is at 1 o'clock on mine; the Bass knob is fine). The speakers have a nice weight and feel like decent quality, except the wood effect feels a bit fake. I would recommend a minimum 5" driver (R2000DB maybe) for anything bigger than a bedroom. I got the Mackie CR5X on sale for the lounge room after my KRK 6" became faulty.

I have the Edifier R1700BTs, with an edifier T5 sub 8 inch. Do you think it makes any sense to upgrade to JBL 308P / 305 / 306 mk2 series + JBL Lsr310S 10inch sub? Or would it make more sense to save up for some klipsch + svs sub or something else? Not looking for flat monitor sound but, slightly fun sound. Want to keep the budget under 1200 USD.

I don’t know how you were able to record the sounds so that it shows the difference between the two speakers, but it has helped me immensely. While the sound seems a bit better on the BTs, the bass, though not buzzing as badly as on the BT, still isn’t up to snuff on the BTs. Even on the BTs the bass is weak and mushy with a bit of buzz. I have been looking for a pair of speakers that have excellent sound to put in a fairly small room, which is my art studio or retreat. I’m currently using the Doss Bluetooth speaker that is going for $59 now on Amazon, though I paid $79 when it was new 2 years ago. But I’m more than ready to move on to better sound. However, the price jump from this level to the next is hefty. You pay another $200 to move up. And I don’t want to overload the smallish room. Consequently, I have been looking for over two years for an upgrade. I don’t use the living room because I’m always in here painting. But music is my muse and I really would like to have better sound. I’m also using Sony’s headphones WH-1000XM4 (I believe the 5 is too techie and it took away from the great sound). If you have any suggestions as to what is out there, I would appreciate hearing about them as I am not a professional sound engineer who knows the lingo and am mystified at the wording. This is an awesome video. You really helped me to decide what to do next. I’m going up to the next level, so that means more research. I really don’t want to “buy a pig in a poke” as the older generations used to say. I want to be informed before deciding. P.S. What do you think of the current Klipsch speakers and is there one made to be used with Bluetooth? I’ll definitely check out your blog.

I completely agree with the posters below who feel that the bass on Edifier's cheaper speakers is tipped up, regardless of what you do with the controls on the side of the speaker. In addition to a powered set of Edifiers, I also have the P17 passives - great little speakers for the price but the voicing is clearly aimed at maximizing the bass from the little 4" drivers. Initially, this seems impressive but its annoying in a nearfield environment (which is exactly where I see most people using the smaller models). Those with parametric eq on their playback software may be able to shelve the bass somewhat, but I'm using Spotify straight into a Fiio FH1 DAC / T-amp combination that gives me no such issues with headphones. A v-shaped sound signature isn't uncommon in cheaper gear - speakers and amps alike - but I really think Edifier went overboard in this case. The S1000, S2000 and S3000 are usually on sale on Amazon AU and that's where I suspect I'll go next time I want a pair of powered speakers.

From the manual, it looks like the BTs now only play line1 or line2 at a time. I have the old R1700BT and they play sounds from both line1 and line2 at the same time, which is what I want. Seems like the BTs is a step backwards in that regard.

Ja wziąłem to drugie w ciemno.

Jeśli chcesz nagłośnić coś większego to r1700bts było by dobrym rozwiązaniem, a jeśli wolisz mimo wszystko mniejsze wymiary to r1280dbs.
Ale z tego co czytałem brzmienie obu modeli jest dość podobne. Więc zastanów się nad tym co tobie jest potrzebne.

The BTS also has a newer version of Bluetooth (BT 5.0 vs. 4.0), which might sound better but certainly would be more stable and has a longer range. The BTS also seems to come with a nicer remote. The problem with the R1700BT is the boomy bass, it sticks out a bit into the performance of the speakers, not to mention the lack of a sub-out for your own dedicated subwoofer, it seems with the R1700BTs they toned down the boomy bass output, to me it sounds like there's more of a soundstage as well,
For music, i could see how the R1700BT would be appealing, in my case i bought the R1700BTs for tv shows / movies, so the boomy bass is NOT a good fit,
    TL;DR
Buy R1700BT for extra (boomy) bass for music,
Buy R1700BTs for more soundstage, less bass, bluetooth 5.0 + sub-out + better controller
R1700BTs looks good to me, either way i don't see how going for the R1700BT would be a good idea, i mean yeah it's got that extra boomy bass, but even then the bass on these speakers isn't fantastic, naturally you'd want to get a dedicated subwoofer and hook it up for the best sound.
My two cents on this *

I hope people are listening to these comparative videos on good studio headphones, like Audio Technica or AKG's. Poor quality speakers or headphones will mask the differences.
I find it really odd that Edifier reissues a speaker 5 years later with the same name adding an 's' to indicate that it has a sub output. That they included a more modern, up-to-date BT makes sense. If that were the only difference, that would be fine. It clearly had been re-tuned and has a different sound. I just don't understand that, why call it the same thing? A bit bizarre to me.
Now to the test and the results. Both have a boomy bass, especially the BT, I think it would drive me a bit nuts. However, that part of the spectrum is especially vulnerable to room placement. I wonder if putting the BT speakers, both actually, on a small stand, or further from the back wall would tame the bass boom? I like the mids and highs on both, a minor tweak of the treble control would make them close in the mids and highs. That bass boom needs to be sorted.
I miss not seeing the frequency response graph comparison of the two in this video. Still these are useful videos and I appreciate them especially with such an excellent microphone, sound levels being maintained and the source included. Thanks!

First I bought the BT version, but I was a bit disappointed by the complete lack of lower bass - despite the praises. It sounds well with airy accoustic music, but as it gets busy, it is just not capable to handle it, but I was more frustrated by the missing bass. Also, the interface and LED was not well designed. E.g. you can't just turn it on/off without the remote, the LED is way too bright for a bedroom, etc.
Since the room is quite small and the speakers sit on the desk, I didn't want to spend so much for a higher-end speaker, so I decided to return the BT and go for the BTS with a Sub.
First of all, the BTS has a much better designed interface, less shiny LEDs, better remote - and of course the sub out. While sounding similar to the BT, maybe a bit even better. Still, a bit boxy to my ears, and sounds like some frequencies are boosted (120hz) while some are muttered. However, the soundstage is great, and overall sounds great with acoustic type of music.
I was looking for a sub that isn't more expensive than the speakers, goes deep enough (below 40 Hz), and is narrower than 32 cm, but the options are rather limited here. Eventually I went for a Presonus Eris Sub 8, and hooked it on. On paper this goes below 35 Hz, but you should not expect much from this price range. I turned the bass-knob on the BTS to minimum, and left the treble on mid. Low pass filter on the sub is around 130 Hz, gain at about the third. This way the sets sound quite convincing, and able to hande more genres of music and movies, games.
My only problem now is that I have a ground loop on the sub, probably originating from my PC GPU.. I will try to sort it out somehow, but via BT it sounds great.
I also own a HK Citation 200 for casual music listening in the living room, thus my expectation of lower bass for a speaker size :) That one is a beast, with very accurate vocals, but much less image and stage (it's mono for sure), that costed me more than the BTS+Sub together.
Overall, I'm satisfied with the R1700BTS+Eris 8 Sub, I can highly recommend. Now I'm off to fight the ground loop..
