There's one setting in advanced power settings that I personally found makes a HUGE difference for performance. In Advanced Power Settings, under PCI Express, turn off Link State Power Management. It drastically improved the experience, removed a lot of stutters in games. It is a repeatable fix as turning it back on instantly brings back the stutters. Windows sees the deck as a laptop and tries to apply the same settings as a laptop to improve battery life. Personally, saw no difference in battery life and big gains in performance.

Yes, I said Surface Duo at the end. My brain barely functions at this point.
I am also fully aware that Wine is not an emulator and that it actually stands for Wine is not an emulator. My comment was a poor attempt at some very dry humor, much like the name of Wine itself. There have already been enough comments correcting this, thanks lol.

Make sure to turn off hibernation mode in the power plan. If it goes to sleep too long and turns into hibernation mode, you can't resume the games. Also a good idea to set turn off hard disk after 0 miutes.

I have the internal NVMe partitioned to run both SteamOS and Windows 11, and lately I have been using the Windows partition more because I've got back in to Fallout 4 and I am playing the PC GamePass version for the extra achievements. My ROMs are on the memory card, which can be read by both SteamOS and Windows partitions, depending on what OS I am using. I also use an application called Handheld Companion to get Windows to see my Steam controller in games. Took about 6 months of trial and error but I think I now have the perfect Steam Deck :)

I'm very happy sticking with the default OS on my Steam Deck, but not being able to download GamePass games onto it is a pretty glaring flaw for me personally. I know some people are alright with cloud streaming, but it's not there for me yet.
Side note: For some reason I thought Tunic was only on Game Pass for Xbox and I was pretty gutted about that. Didn't realise it's available for PC now. Downloading it now!
Another side note: Horizon Zero Dawn being the "game I need to go back to" is very relatable and I think almost a universal feeling at this point 😂

windows only on the stem deck was pretty annoying for me just because some games did run better in SteamOS. But what ended up being the best set up for me was partitioning my internal 256 drive in half installing windows and mw2 on one partition and SteamOS w/ elden ring on the other and using 2 sd cards for either boot for extra game storage. That way i can still play my window games which is mainly cod, and still have the stability of steamOS. just note that filling the internal memory to its capacity has caused people issues in the past so i recomend leaving a good 20 gigs free at least

Was really disappointed how badly Battlefield 2042 runs on Windows, a stutter fest even at low settings. Just not worth playing that one. Still to try Black Ops Cold War multiplayer.
I do find Steam OS optimises games so well if they run it’s usually really well. You have to work much harder to find that sweet spot with Windows as you can’t easily change power, add fsr natively or cap to 40fps etc. I have found an app but it’s not very good

For the 2:00 issue "losing controller functions when returning from sleep"
What you could try is setting global controller layout (I believe) set to off (I can't remember)
I remember you go into steam big picture mode within the desktop mode (so not the "gamepad" mode), fine the game shortcut, go to preferences for the game shortcut, and try disabling global controller there.
I don't have anything within origin I play on my deck but I don't have the same issue you do. I did have the same issue when I played spider man shattered dimensions and that fixed it for me. Anyone let me know how it works for them.

So do you lose all the performance settings like fps lock, refresh rate and performance overlays when using windows or is there another deck/windows program to add them?
I am really impressed with the Steam Deck OS, what it can do and how it implements things is nothing short of impressive and there is loads of apps in the linux desktop mode.. but.. having to switch between desk top and Deck OS to do some fixes and utilities get a bit old and having very mixed results when getting other game platforms to work is just crap (Ubisoft anyone?)... I patch a lot of these issues by rebuying games through Steam when they are on sale but it's not ideal... Windows just does it all but you then lose some of the things that makes the Deck great and introduce other issues that require work arounds.
I think i will try a windows install on a hard drive and road test it..

Also not a Linux person and the Steam Deck is the first PC that I've owned/used that ran Linux, though at the same time I actually love that it's Linux, yeah, some games don't work, though relatively few for me since I don't do online gaming type games in general so I don't have the anti-cheat compatibility issue and I don't use game pass or anything Microsoft specific for gaming, however I'm personally hoping the Steam Deck's success will eventually make it viable to ditch Windows entirely on my desktop PC and laptop as at this point I just don't like Windows, I simply use it because I have to for software I use, but I hate all the bloat, poor design changes they keep making, and most of all the insane amounts of data tracking they do, which I find especially unacceptable on software I paid for.

SteamOS is in my opinion the better experience overall, and it was a good choice going with Linux, but I am glad to see that Windows can work if you need it to. This is coming from someone that absolutely despises Windows.

I'm kind of interested in switching to windows for compatibility but idk if it's worth it. I mean the whole steam input for controls is a game changer for portable pcs it makes it so the controls work with almost everything even straight mouse and keyboard games. I like steam os is just the compatibility that kind of hurts it for because it won't run everything some things require alot of tweaking others won't work at all.

    • @Jsfun
      @Jsfun Před rokem +1

Steam Input works fine on Windows, it's just a base Steam feature. You can also dual boot and get the SteamOS UI by running Steam Big Picture.

Also worth noting that if you also have a windows PC, you can natively cast the screen wirelessly to another windows machine on the same network. It's absolutely not the most stable solution so not useable for gaming but if you're exploring or tinkering with settings etc I highly recommend if you don't have a physical connection to hand
