    No echo or reverb on the mic, just dry and clean. That's crazy hard to do well, and shows how Phil was at the height of his vocal game.

    I've been a Genesis fan for a *long* time. Phil Collins is a real hero. His career story is a remarkable narrative, speaking volumes on the value of perserverencre and hard work. A real self made man.

    So interesting to think of all that would come in the next couple decades while watching this 29 yr old entertainer with his first solo album performing on national TV using only his voice and a piano. You would never guess he was one of rock's best drummers. A humble, talented genius.

    You Know What I Mean is such an honest piece of art. He sang sweetly of something so personal and put his heart on the table for the audience to see bare. That is courage if I’ve ever seen it.

  • @WintersWar
    @WintersWar Před 2 lety +6

    I like that's he's still using his 70's backup voice style here singing you know what I mean.

    I agree with him. As an artist, some songs require such a level of emotion that it is practically impossible to do it right at a particular time scheduled in advance in front of a team of producers looking at you, expecting you to sell records and a manager looking at the clock. Now, nowadays, most of us do our recordings at home, so in a way, he was a pioneer.

    • @davebellamy4867
      @davebellamy4867 Před 3 lety +6

      I think he recorded a lot of it on 8 track at home and didn't want to try to do them again in a studio because it took so much energy out of him and doing it again wouldn't be real.

    Le temps passe très vite ! Phil aimerait sûrement revenir en arrière... il pouvait jouer de la batterie et avait sa santé et ses cheveux avant que ses traumatismes sentimentaux et l'excès de cortisone ainsi que les mauvais soins médicaux ne lui détruisent sa santé. Quelle frustration pour lui et pour nous... Malgré tout, en 2021, Phil reste le meilleur batteur, chanteur, musicien et acteur (voir ou revoir "Buster", "Frauds", entre autres). Merci pour ce documentaire.

    In 1982 Phil produced the album Something's Going On for ABBA star Anni-Frid Lyngstad which included a cover version of You Know What I Mean.

  • @geoffreyjonathanwilson5826

    And in September '81 he performed this song at The Secret Policeman's Ball in London.

    Open and honest mode Phil, slightly nervy on the vocal at the start of both songs. Good upload, thanks. First comment too, Brucie bonus.

      Ya slightly, it seems like theres no reverb coming back to his mix, which seems non existant besides a wedge or two possibly on the ground. Also very early in his career upfront singing also first shot at a solo run...still very shy and not conquered everything in life yet besides loss and broken heart. Well he eas just starting to come out of his shell...looks like Kenny Everetts younger brother perhaps
      ...ot mayhe my buddy idle nate wood...he even sounds like earlier phil thinner voice etc. Check out nate wood hes a ridiculously great version of a mdern day phil even evolved in all areas and how can i even say that out loud? ! He can play bass drums keys and sing all at the same time.... sounds silly right ?! It is but silly amazing. Yhanks phil collins

    huh... its really interesting that he's definitely not lip syncing here, but i can def understand better why lip syncing was such a standard thing back then cause without the echo and processing on his vocal this sounds like an open mic night at the coffee shop..
    albeit prolly the greatest coffee shop performance of all time 😅

    Phil starting to take on the 80s...wow 10 years of solid historical work in several genres. ITAT is so tribal that it's barely a pop song...spare menacing and a wicked bolero build-up.
