Wait a minuet! The vanquisher is a damn good gun! Heavy means hold still and order it to take aim. With scout sentinels in range of daring recon YOU CANNOT MISS without serious debuffs. Remember the shadowsword that wouldn't kill that dreadnought in the mid week tournament.
Don’t look at the hunter killer as “free, so why not” look at it as “I’m paying points for it either way so I should take it”
I never took HK Missiles before because they were a waste of points. But now, they’re worth it. I need to dig through my bits box and find all those leftover missiles.

The Battle Cannon is my go to right now. The built in re roll of 1s, and then rerolls of ALL hits if targeting a unit on an objective bypasses the need for orders; which is so stupidly rare for AM tanks right now. The reliability of these shots...and that includes the sponsons and hull mounted weapon, plus the relatively cheap cost of just 180 points; makes this the go to variation for me. The three sponsons are then chosen based on what you have in the rest of your list, balanced with this tanks amazing ability.

Full rerolls actually gives a better statistical advantage the better the ballistics skill is. Thats why Tempestor Primes used to be points costed higher than the Company commander despite not having a invulnerable save.
Agreed. I’m running double battle cannon and one exterminator and it’s working a treat. The krieg and supporting elements take care of the rest

Executioner should have had a plasma vents rule that let you re-roll hazardous rolls so that you could run full plasma and push the guns to 11
In general plasma cannons are the superior option on standoff tanks because of blast/ap and multi meltas are best on aggressive tanks like the eradicator/demolisher that want to push up and can fire into combat without penalty... lethal hitting with ap-4 d6+2 damage blasters after an opponent fails to finish you off in a charge is so damn satisfying
But on the other hand it's funny as hell when your executioner rattles itself apart.
I wish GW would give the option to not have the sponsons (I know you can just not take them but you are still having to pay points for them!). Maybe the leman Russ could have +1BS if you opt not to take sponsons.

Lord solar a must, so he can order tanks to take aim or any other units that are using Hunter Killer missles.
The really nice thing about the new Leman Russ kit is that the hull and sponson weapons are basically just push fit so it’s easy to either magnetize them to allow easy weapon swaps. Or you can even just leave them push fit which is even easier though they can fall out during the game sometimes.
The new russ kit is the exact same as the old ones, they didn't change the model at all. it just has every weapon option in 1 box instead of 2

In my local meta pretty much every guard list has an Exterminator with plasma cannons and a Tank Com with the second order enhancement, Demolisher and multi-meltas.
One thing most people seem to miss is that the hunter killer missile on a regular Lehman Russ benefits from it's re-rolls.
Also, I kind of want my leman Russ annihilator back (now I'm showing my age!)
Always wished there was an option for lascannon sponsons for an all lascannon loadout.

Imo, tank commanders are best as executioners w/ plasma sponsons rn. Since the turret rule for executioners on a regular russ is "meh", you aren't losing much when u take it as a commander. Plus if he gets smoked, you overcharge everyone of those bad Leeroys while using "death befitting an officer".

The vanquisher needs native 3+ BS on its turret (2+ with heavy and not moving).
I thought the same but with orders and sentinels you get it down to a 2 easy enough, and reroll ones.
I think the vanquisher should have an ability for rapid reload for a second shot

Disagree on the hate on the Vanquisher, it's a monster killer through and through, give it a Take Aim order and don't move him and it's hitting on 2+ I killed Angron TWICE while running a pair of Vanquishers
A Hit roll can never be modified by more than -1 or +1.
So it hits on a 3+ not a 2+. But I like the Tank too.

For the tank commander, the whole plasma is also fun, as if the tank commander die because of hazardous, he shoot twice, and full plasma twice bring some hurt. Plus the executionner ability is really meh.
It is meh. Really too bad too. But (while it feels terrible to do; though it does indeed play into the old standby and correct tactic of "kill it till it's dead"), it does stop those one or two marines or whatever from scoring or running around causing so much pandemonium. That happened to me a lot when I was learning how to play - two Executioners has put a sure end to that chicanery.

@@EnduriusYep, Leman Russ Annihilator. Had twin lascannons in the turret, snazzy looking tank. I believe the Kreig Russes back in the day could take sponson lascannons.
I think a hull heavy bolter on the Exterminator could be ok as well. A bit more dakka + sustained hits. It loses its anti-armor punch, but it always depends where you wanna use the tank, yeah?

Battlecannon - lascannon and heavy bolter sponsons
Demolisher - lascannon and multimeltas
Eradicator - flamer and flamer sponsons
Punisher - Heavy bolter and heavy bolter sponsons
Vanquisher - lascannon and heavy bolter sponsons
Exterminator- lascannon and heavy bolter sponsons(tho plasmacannons might be a good option here)
Executioner - lascannon and plasma cannon sponson.
Annihilator - not in the book and Im not sure if ForgeWorld still makes these. I would put lascannon and plasma cannon sponsons on it tho.
I have only put the pintle mounted stubber on all my Russ's.
I'm not sure which pattern Russ I like the most. Maybe the standard one with Ryza a close second.

And I do have an Annihilator, it has Las / HB but that's from it being on an older hull. Wouldn't mind plasmas for the range as I don't really want to get close enough to multi.
I'm torn about the patterns too. I do love the Gryphonne Pattern Vanquisher's cannon, but prefer the stubber co-ax on the Ryza Pattern. And they both have the targeting box on the side.
I think the triple HB loadout is under rated. Exploding hits, volume to fish for lethal hits if you're still, and the many buffs to AP or to wound rolls set it up well. Particularly with the Battle Tank with its built in re-rolls.
I think I might need to start trying plasma cannons more. I have them and all my Lemans are magnetized. They’re just still on their sprues. I usually just use heavy bolters all the way 😅
Recently managed to snag a new in box classic leman Russ for a decent price on eBay - so definitely building an El Classico just for nostalgia
I like flamers on the punisher to run it down the lane or against enemy melee to just say, go ahead, move near me, I’m gonna overwatch you to death
I run meltas on vanquisher because I am hyper aggressive and also goddamn I have one shot so many vehicles with that amount of anti tank, also if the vanquisher fails, melta is always reliable to do some damage
In regards to the Tank Commander - if not taking a Demolisher, the Exterminator is objectively better than the Battlecannon. S10 is worse than S9 TL against every single T value. Flat 8 shots is only beaten on average when shooting a 10 man plus unit (but against hordes, the TL will then balance this out).
I often run 3 Exterminators with 3 HFs each and push them up to make sure they are in RF range (you don't want to sit them back over 24" away). I'll put FoF on a unit and the HF are in range then the first Executioner gets -2 ap and ignores cover with an average of 10.5 S5 hits, whilst the second or sometimes third executioner gets -3ap and ignores cover. They utterly wipe the Necron blobs people measure their fire against. Against 2+/4++ targets or 3+/5++ targets - you don't even need the FoF.
Keep posting stuff like this. Guard needs to stack and stack and stack buffs. Withering Hail buffing up heavy flamers is sick nasty.
I agree with most all but still run heavy b on exterminators and I run a hull heavy flamer on demolisher as with plasma , I forget how I run my exterminators exactly but it’s close. All in all great advice , carry on troopers.
Exterminator is the best even without its ability. For a tank hunter i like the dorn with oppressor cannon over the demolisher
Agreed the exterminator is the bane of infantry, great for holding objective cheap and spammable, those multi meltas and lascannon can deal with light armor
@@RadarLeon twin linked on the cannon also makes it only slightly worse than the demolisher vs heavy armor so long as you can juice the AP with fields of fire

I dunno. I get that mileage may vary on different loadouts based on role and list, but for general purpose i can't see much better than lascannon and double plasma cannon. Yeah tripple flamer, bolter and perhaps some multimelta is fun, but that loadout is just so effective against most things.
Here’s the thing about a Russ. Consider it 5 high strength shots at 18” and 1 all the way out to 48. It’s an over t9 with a 2+. The turret is the cherry on top.
D6+6 is a lot of damage usually about 9. Paired with the last cannon, or quad melta. It one shots a lot of stuff in the game with decent rolls.

What would you say is the best side weapon loadout for the Dorn? I had good experience with the meltas and bolters. The meltas killed Abadon before I got to the main cannon xD
I like to run my commander "melty" with melta's, lascannon. I like to run my exterminator as "dakka" three HB's, and I like to run my demolisher with three flamers.
Never underestimate what a heavy stubber can do. six shots within 18 is nice. Every battle my heavy stubbers are doing something to something. Might be a pot shot on a monster, Might be the last guy of a unit.
I am a stickler for having all my units as equipped. If it has a stubber...it has a stubber, otherwise I forget about them. Same with smoke launchers
Plasma Cannons are outperforming Heavy Bolters against Infantry due to Blast. Against 20 model blobs, firing both Plasma Cannons into it gives you a minimum of 10 shots - 4 more than the Heavy Bolters. They outperform Heavy Bolters into MEQs and TEQs if you overcharge due to better AP and strength. Not seeing much of a case for Heavy Bolters at the moment.
On demolisher and exterminator russes which really want to get up close and personal, heavy bolters are great for clearing out chaff while not getting tagged up in close combat like the Plasma cannons with Blast. 2 HB sponsons and the stubber is actually pretty good plinking against hordes. Heavy Flamers may do better in this situation but the range of the HB gives it flexibility and a tactical edge.
I like to take my russes into the midfield and stay still to get lethal hits, which really ups the damage of the HB with their 2 Damage shots.
That all said, I definitely see the appeal with vanquishers and maybe even battle cannons.
@@aaronliiva824 I can see the advantage of trying to maximise Born Soldiers with the Heavy Bolters. I do wonder what other Detachments the Codex will bring, currently Born Soldiers is ok, good on artillery, not so great for a grabbing objectives game.
Yeah plasma cannons are much better in almost every instance except for the eradicator/demolisher builds that want to push forward and even in that case the multi melta is arguably much better since it can delete practically anything it comes into contact. There is a case for the standard russ because full rerolls give you a higher chance to get sustained hits but that is about the only tank I would even begin to think about taking them on... they were the cheapest option every edition for a reason

Am I missing something? Why would multi-melta on the Exterminator not be good? Play aggressive, you want to be within 24” to get the rapid fire so just get an extra 6” and shoot with the multi-melta - great AP, twin-linked?
Old imperial guard player and just starting to recollect them, but didn't the executioner upon release allow you to put a plasma cannon on its hull, or am i imaginings things because that would be the far superior load out if they didnt take that a way.

I’d love the tank commander to get 2 orders and the squadron keyword… order themselves and another unit. They’d be really worth their pts then (and maybe even an increase in pts)

For tank commander I can see the argument for hull heavy flamer. But in the end the first shooting of Lascannon plus Hunter Killer missile is too important for a later game gimmick (overwatch)
The heavy bolter is better on the Exterminator because sustained lethal hits and guaranteed 6 but probably 8 shots 3(ish) auto wounding
Melta honestly kinda sucks and putting them on the demolisher is embracing the casino life with those d6 damage profiles lol i take plasma almost everytime, blast is too powerful of a keyword to ignore. It shreds the same targets melta would + it can give you extra daka vs hordes
Actually I have a load out that only realy works in my game group. Since we don't do alot of big touth monsters or tanks. Basic leman russ with battlecannon and triple heavy bolter. Not the best but it saved me a few games.
Vanquisher hits on 2+ with orders and heavy. If scouted, then reroll 1s. Agreed, stay away from 4+ invuls.
Ill take 3 Leman Russ over 2 Rogal Dorns every. Single. Time.

Getting back into 40k after a while and hearing the vanquisher is so bad makes me sad.
The vanquisher should at least have d3 plus 3 shots it's such a shit gun.
It would make sense if the regular battle cannon shot could be used as well as the vanquisher shot so you just pick your profile before shooting to at least make the tank semi useful
Armoured spearhead does not specify "in your shooting phase" so full reroll in overwatch i guess
10nth is annoying, almost all my Leman Russes have Heavybolter sponses...and hullmounted Heavybolter.
I will never understand why GW forced us all to use power level when points were clearly more popular.
