It is forbidden to make maps of Eltabbar under penalty of death. The reason, though not commonly known, is that the glyph that imprisons the demon Eltab under the city is composed of the streets of Eltabbar!

Worth of saying that the Szass Tam story is been told in the fantastic novel series "The Haunted Lands" by Richard Lee Byers.
I LOVE that series. I'm about to read it again!!
There's a 5e book out now from Ed Greenwood about the Red Wizards of Thay.
Good summation. Thay is a convincing example of a (mostly) stable LE society: surrounded by both enemies and potential conquests, the Zulkirs have more incentive to work with than against each other... most of the time, anyway.
Szass Tam is one of my favorite bad guys. He is constantly trying to take over Aglarond and continually fails. It's almost a sport now for the Witch Queen of Aglarond. There is a great scene in one of the Elmister books (I think?) where a Thay assassin comes to kill her while Elminster is visiting and they just destroy him. It's pretty comical.
The Red Wizards are going to be the villains for the upcoming DND movie.

@@ProffessorYellow it's more of a trend than a hard rule on average. Similar to netheril being made up of mainly humans w/ elves potentially spliced around due to being their teachers. Having a variety of races isn't completely wrong it's just red wizards on average are humans.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention his unique appearance: that unlike most liches who are most often encountered in a severe state of advanced decay, Szass Tam treats his body the way a mortician treats a cadaver. He indulges in endless lotions and oils, rejuvenative unctions, and layers on heavy cosmetics and perfumes to maintain an appearance that is passable among the living.
In other words, he’s the opposite of the Lich Mellifleur, Who is described as completely skeletal with no remaining shards of flesh…
I think him and Arklem Greeth go to the same beautician. :D
I can see liches being a good subject for Terry Pratchett-style comedy, like a lich who has bits dropping off, but is always trying to stick them back on.
I always thought he kept a disguise spell up.

I know I’m late the the party but theoretically depending on the culture of the country you could have aristocratic that maintained there privileges irrespective of wealth. E.g. Patricians in Rome.

Spell plague, city of torment, Key of Stars, were books where I learned about the red wizards of thay.

These are really good.
I like how scary and dangerous Szass Tam is, however, that just makes me even more wondered with another character, called The Simbul. As you may know, The Simbul, is one of the seven sisters and was the main reason preventing Thay legions to overcame west Faerûn.
The Queen of Aglorand, one of Thay's greatest rivals along with Rashenen. :)

Thayan Gladiator and Thrall of Eltab are the best prestige classes for a monster character and supporting wizard. I cant wait to play a Minotaur Thayan Gladiator with flaming horn, tower shield and a giant flail. Bonus, every DM I talk to says that flaming horns give a +? to intimidate.

Is there any lore in Forgotten Realms explains how the Dragon Masks were made which were used by the Cult of the Dragon to raise Tiamat? Running TOD and would love to provide some back story in these masks and how they were created, etc.

Just to say, I believe some of the 7 Sisters have had dealings with the Red Wizards.
The only thing I don't like about your videos is that THEY ARE TOO SHORT....lol.Its hard to do justice to your topic this way.The Realms are a vast world so I know why you do short vid's.I have to admit these get my D&D blood fired up.I just turned 50 and have played in the realms once it became clear that WOTC was going to focus on this world.I do however miss The World of Greyhawk and the Realms as I haven't played with dice/character sheets since 1998.The small Canadian town I now live in doesn't have any groups for D&D so I cant even satisfy my first love.I even still have most of my books and dice.Oh well,I guess my comp. games will have to suffice.Please keep doing this work as I think it is important and the depth of even short vid's keeps this place alive.Cheers.

There wasn't one actually. Only the Time of Troubles for AD&D 2nd edition, the Spellplague for 4th, and the Second Sundering for 5th edition.

Would people living along the Sword Coast be aware of the hierarchy and Red Wizards of Thay?
They'd likely be very aware of Red Wizards as they place themselves all over Faerun selling magical items and (where possible) trading slaves.
Would they be familiar with the hierarchy? Probably not, unless they have some particular reason to be well versed in a culture on "the other side of the world."

It's kind of a long story and was an inside joke back in 2010! I was commenting on how kids now seemed to have creative parents where their kids name would be Tiffany, but they would spell it Tiphanni. So as a joke I decided to become Jordan with a silent PH in the middle :)
so... if you can create an army of undead that is smart enough to handle tactics, organization, etc, why would you worry about slaves? You have to *feed* slaves. An army of zombie slaves might have some downsides (what's that smell?), but they never get tired, stop, etc.
I believe Szass Tam would agree with you!
On the other hand, undead don't follow you just cuz they think you're cool - you have to expend a *lot* of magical energy on a constant basis to maintain control.

Do the Genasi come from these lands?
Genasi are planetouched humanoids, typically crossbreeding between humans and genies. The Genies were most prevalent in Zakhara; Thay on the other hand is in Faerun. Although possibly a few Genasi made their way north to Faerun.

why does everyone hate on the Spellplague? I've only recently started playing (started with 5e) so maybe there's a lot of stuff I don't know about but I thought the Spellplague was a pretty cool concept.
+Eric Young I believe it is that WoTC used the spellplague to justify the complete overhaul of DnD for 4th edition. But I'm with you, I think it (and 4th edition) are over hated.
It was a disrespectful overhaul of the entire setting that came with massive retcons, all of which happened for no better reason than, "D&D switched editions."
The players didn't want it. The authors didn't want it. It was a 100% corporate, "let's freshen things up" decision.
