I have a 1984 Honda TRX 200 - I get spark when use the pull cord but not when I use the push start. Engine turns over but plug never sparks. Any thought on what this could be?

That is quite strange the electrical start is separate from pullstart. The electric start doesn't work unless it is in neutral and the neutral switch is closed. The only way i'd see it killing spark is if a wire was grounded or solenoid is hooked up wrong. Basically in a nut shell, you could remove electric start completely and have spark or wire your own. Feel free to send me a few pics or a video of what youre working with. the TRX 200 is a good engine, if you see my Ripper build , thats what engine is in that. email is muddythumper @ hotmail.com all one word

Additionally forgot to ask, is your battery good? turn over the engine fast enough? just follow the wires on the start circuit itself if possible. The ground on the battery just goes to a ground, however on the positive side the positive wire should run to the solenoid then from solenoid to the starter. When you click the start button it should click and connect power down too the starter and crank the engine. If its still not sparking could be either weak battery, corroded ignition switch wires for spark, or pulse generator a bit weak. when you use the pull start you basically bypass the whole electric starter circuit. Most likely i suspect a weak or improperly hooked up starter circuit though.

Thanks bud, figured throw a few troubleshooting videos up to help with old bikes that don't run. Lots of times its a simple fix, this bike had no harness on it haha!

well i wouldnt say it was together, when i got it, there was not even a harness on it really. that bike was in rough shape, however check out my big thunder build, thats what i did to it.

Hi I have a 1984 200es that had no spark.. I set the air gap on the pulse generator and it had spark but sometimes it wouldn't spark..or it would have very weak spark. Then it lost spark so I fixed the main power wire coming from the stator and it got spark again. But shortly after it lost spark. I know that my connection is good I checked the ohms on the stator and it was around 250ohms.. I also have a known good coil...but still no spark? What are your thoughts

have you tried disconnecting the kill switches or ignition switch and testing it that way? Could be a simple loose connection or a partially corroded switch

bought 2 weeks ago a1985 200s - started last week, but has weak spark and now no start, plug seems a little wet. any advice? chinese carb from previous owner

    • @muddythumper8152

If the plug is fouled, most likely shes running a little rich, which would kill spark overtime. Fouled plugs don't like to spark. I'd throw a new plug in it, and test it for spark compared to the last plug and see if its any better. If need be youll need to test the components like stator, pulser, etc. However start easy first, clean the carb, make sure its not running rich and take it from there. Chinese carbs are really hit or miss. Im running a chinese carb on my lifted trike but it has a snorkel, full custom exhaust i made (cherry bomb style) and i had to play around with my jetting to get it to run right due to the mods. Sometimes the chinese carbs run rich from factory , other times they are far to lean

@@muddythumper8152 Thanks for the reply. The Chinese carb only has 2 screws 1 is for idle the other one I believe is air mixture. The air mixture screw was turned all the way in. I took the carb off twice and it is super clean. I think the guy before me recently installed it. Turning the lower screw on the carb which I think is the air mix outward would solve it running too rich running to rich correct?? Previous owner said it It would idle high even though he adjusted the idle down and it would stall out. I imagine if runs too rich, it would idle high, correct? Dont want put in new plug just to have it foul too so should i back out screw 1 full turn than try new plug? The bike started couple times last week.

@@muddythumper8152 the new plug work TY!!😉 it idles but wants to stall, i increase idle slightly and seems good but wen turn throttle and let go it idles super high and stays and it doesnt seem throttle is sticking. When give steady throttle its very spotty and boggy(not smooth). I tried adjusting air/fuel screw but no luck. Also, i noticed the choke lever when running is bouncing like crazy. Was wondering if thats why its boggy?? You think Cheap carb is problem?? I took a video but doesnt seem i can post it 😔
