BucketPonds Q&A (related to this video)
    • What is BucketPonds?
BucketPonds is a CZcams community focused on all sorts of low-cost aquarium & gardening projects. I am a jar aquarium and ecosphere enthusiast. Constantly building new projects and collecting new species in the wild.
    • Why do you wear a mask?
I've been a masked-up weirdo for years. Long before COVID. Wearing a mask helps ease my anxiety. As a kid I was always interested in Halloween masks and musicians that covered their faces. I even had a short career as an artist, selling hand painted masks online.
    • What's your goal with the channel?
Ultimately I want to do this full time. Becoming a full time content creator. So we can upload daily videos, do live streams and share/show all the things I see and do on a regular basis. Only a small fraction of my jars and projects actually end up on the channel. So thank you for watching, bringing us closer to the goal.
    • How did you get started in this hobby?
I grew up in beautiful South Florida, where the fish keeping hobby is pretty prolific. My parents ran some amazing aquariums. I lost touch with the hobby as a young man. Until we found an abandoned tank on the side of the road one day. Full of bladder snails and detritus worms... and I fell in love all over again.
    • Where do you find wild bladder snails?
So far I've found wild bladder snails only in two local water bodies. The first location was a mud bog near a large river. Cloudy milk white water full of alligator weed, which we also collected. The second location was a green water pond in the middle of a small city.
    • How much do you spend on these projects?
I spend about $100 to $200 annually (each year) on these projects. That's less than ten dollars each month. Not counting fish food! Which is expensive. Most of my costs are buying jars from dollar stores & occasionally buying hardscape from the local Home Depot.
    • Where did you get the Dayflower?
My Day flower is a bit of a mystery! One day it simply appeared near my outdoor pond oasis. I believe it came from a pack of wildflower seeds. Which you can find at any plant shop or supermarket. You might even see a picture of a little blue Dayflower on the box or package.
    • Where did you get your duckweeds?
My first duckweed was actually purchased online from a small time vendor. The duckweed arrived dead/dry leaving me horribly dissatisfied. That's when I had the brilliant idea to begin wild collecting. I found a duckweed pond off in the woods nearby and began the journey that became BucketPonds.
    • What about your moss? where did that come from?
My moss is also a bit of a mystery. I believe that it is Hypnum moss but I am by no means an expert. I first found this moss growing on some paving stones on our property and tested it underwater. Surprisingly it grew well underwater and became a staple in our various projects.
    • How long have you been doing this?
as of writing this description, I have been involved in this hobby around four years. I was watching people like LifeinJars, Serpadesign and Michael Langerman on CZcams. I loved their projects but felt that there was room to improve. So I started doing things my own way. These jars are an art form, every artist has their own inspiration and style.
    • Who is your favorite CZcamsr?
That's a tough choice! Serpadesign lost my interest because opens every one of his "sealed" terrariums and ecospheres. To me that felt like he was lying to us viewers. Ultimately I'd have to say that my favorite CZcamsr is AntsCanada. His content is top notch and I am a proud member of the A.C. family!
    • Are bladder snails as smart as you say?
Well I wouldn't say there "smart" but they are well adapted to all sorts of situations. A bladder snail can breathe air just like us, allowing them to survive in eutrophic conditions. They can sort of fight back to deal with their predators and they're just so cool to observe. So in some ways, they are smart but not intelligent if that makes sense.
    • Do all snails carry parasites?
I see this in the news a lot. Oh no snail parasites that infect tons of people every year! but in reality most of these infections are in very poor rural areas. Where people are eating things like giant African land snails. Raising some bladder snails in a jar is a pretty safe hobby. Though you should be very careful when wild collecting.
    • Did you really write this description?
    Yes! ... yes I did.
