  • Unboxing rare color Mystery Snails. These mystery snails are a difficult color to find in my area and also online. We have bought some purple and Magenta Mystery snails. We hope in the future to breed these. Their shells are not good but I am hoping with a good diet and clean water they will improve. They are currently in a 10 gallon tank and will need a lot of water changes. We will be moving them into a bigger tank soon.

    I breed mystery snails. One day I found a snail on the ground behind the aquarium, he was probably there for a month. Put him in some water and sure enough he came to life. I find these little guys to be fascinating.

    They shipped frogbit bc it will absorb ammonia. Also, the "dirt" was mystery snail poop not dirt lol. And the gravel was in there bc when the breeder got them from the tank they were one of two thing 1. Not gentle and scared the shyt out them so they grabbed gravel and it got stuck in the shell or 2. They don't interact with their snails much so every little bit of movement scares them so they freak out and grab gravel. When they grab the gravel it's lodged in the most thin and brittle part of their shell. So often time when they try to slam closed even tighter with gravel in the way it will damage the shell. It's really no big deal as long as it's the thin rim that's new growth. It happens just when they jump off the walls and land.

    I’m so excited to get my first snail!! He’s gonna help control algae in my betta tank! I’m 22 and my dad has always been in the aquarium hobby since before I was born and he’d never let me get snails because he thought they all multiplied into millions, which they do but what I understand from mystery snails is that they lay eggs and you just skim them off the top of the water. Anyways I finally am gonna get a blue mystery snail and I’m so excited! I used to love hunting for land snails as a kid. My betta is a spoiled boi so the snail will probably be spoiled too!

      @Paige Your comment was two years ago so I’m sure YOU have figured this out- but to those who don’t know, Mystery snails lay a single ‘chunk’ of eggs ABOVE the waterline- if you don’t want more snails, remove & discard them. They are very easy to remove and that makes population control up to you.

  • @sststr
    @sststr Před rokem +2

    Only just yesterday, I discovered mystery snails can't hear? I have mixed feelings about that. Obviously that means talking to them is pointless, but it also means the noise from the water filter must not trouble them. They don't seem bothered by the rate of flow, they even kind of like to be over by the filter a fair bit of the time, but it is kind of noisy, so glad that's not a problem for them.
    Also got an idea of just how abominably poor their vision is. Which is also kind of disappointing, but not entirely surprising.
    They apparently have a good sense of smell, and their feelers are quite effective, so they navigate around well enough on those two things, but that lack of hearing makes me kind of sad for them.

    The comment on waste is a good point. Checking food for the aquarium inhabitants before you buy it can help avoid the problem. I never thought much about it until I read a label and found wheat, soy and other grains, now I am more selective.

    It could be that the dirt is because they were on the bottom of the tank when scooped out, and probably took some dirt inside their shell when they closed their operculum. All of my mystery snails have done that at one point or another. Regarding the plants, I'm not bothered by that either, because to me, those are free plants, and their existence isn't doing any harm to the snails. Poor water quality can make a snail's shell really brittle like that, especially if the pH is below 7.0, and if the KH is below 50ppm. Shell damage at the tip of the spiral will not repair over time, even as the snail grows. Any holes in the shell need to be repaired with shell from chicken eggs, and gel superglue (use gel cyanoacrylate superglue ONLY). The damage on the front of the shell, where the snails go in and out, that area will grow out over time and the growth line will be a little odd looking but the new section of growth will look really lovely as long as they have good water and a good diet.
    Mystery snails take a long time, sometimes anyway, to come out after shipping. My baby purple snail took nearly an hour to come out and start exploring the tank. Others of mine have taken half that time, or a couple minutes. I think it depends on the snail.

      Where can I find the Repashy with calcium? We inherited a apple snail with a pretty bad split in his shell. My guess is that hes been infiltered water for a while which, with what ive read, is not as good as hardwater. We have algae wafers and will be getting a cuttle bone too. We already have a moss ball which ''Fred'' seems to enjoy. He's been much more active since he left the tank from work. We know his shell can heal, we're just not sure how to create the right environment and diet for him. Any help would be greatly appreciated !

    • @Lifewithpets72
      @Lifewithpets72  Před 5 lety +1

      Shipping them in paper towel like that is the best way but the cup should have been something much stronger so it couldn't get crushed. if they're shipped in water the ammonia levels get dangerously high due to the waste they produce.

    Plus the warmth would help them poo more too, lol. 💩😋 (I was referring to the shipping poop, lol.)
    Also, the next day when you found all the poop in the tank? It could be from your coconut husk. Snails love to eat any kind of wood and that's very fibrous. They could have all chowed down on it and then pooped everywhere. I know it's a different snail, but same occurrence: I had to actually get rid of a nerite once because it wouldn't stop pooping everywhere and it was only a small three gallon! What happened was I got a piece of Mopani driftwood. The snail rarely left that wood after I put it in there and there was so much black poo everywhere!!!! Everything was dandy before that. But maybe that's what happened? Anyway, I thought it was so funny tho when you were saying, "I've never seen this much dirt before" while unpacking the snails... I was thinking, "doesn't she realize that's poo??". 😂 Then I realized you were just being proper, lol. 😉

    Do you think snails or shrimp are a better clean up crew for fish tanks? I’m pretty new to fish care and I have a betta that I’ve had for about two months. Just got him some plants and two Amano shrimp roommates that are just about as big as he is. They seem to be doing okay, but they’re leaving a lot of poop!

      Shrimp have a very small bio load on a tank, snails make a lot more mess.

      Corrine Wager Thanks for the info! Things have changed in three weeks. Original betta is in a 5 gallon tank with a couple of amano shrimp (not the ones in my original comment) and three nerite snails. The tank in my original comment is a 3.7 gallon, and that currently houses one female betta and a spotted Cory. The Cory is the lone survivor of my cousin’s 10 gallon disaster. I think that she had overstocked it. Until I can get a bigger tank, I’m thinking of moving the female and the cory into the 5, and the male betta into the 3.7. I’m really not too sure what to do! The Petco guy said I could do that and add two more Cory to the 5 gallon.

      What is your tank set up like? What temperature is the tank at?

    • @MrsStevenBrown
      @MrsStevenBrown Před 5 lety

      Yes, tanks must be warm, too many people just think room temp is enough, it’s not, warm( 75-79*F) humid and fresh clean water changes (30% per week)

    • @k.e.M_
      @k.e.M_ Před 5 lety

      MrsStevenBrown its a small fresh water tank with a heater in it and the thing that blows bubbles for air for the fish.

    • @MrsStevenBrown
      @MrsStevenBrown Před 5 lety

      KimberlyElizabeth 83 what are you feeding? What is the temperature? I’d advise a 30-50% water change, water temp at 75-79’F and maybe add a boiled spinach leaf (4 min boiled) near to the snail, check for any toxins that could have gotten in, hand creams, pennies are deadly, foreign objects can leak things, make it only natural items :) Good luck!

    • @Lifewithpets72
      @Lifewithpets72  Před 4 lety +1

      When we go on a 7 day vacation they get fed once in that time. I personally wouldn’t go any longer than that but if they’re healthy they probably could go a little longer.

      It really depends what you’re wanting them for. If to help with algae then definitely the nerite snail, otherwise either is great.
