- I replace the brittle old windshield molding on a 2005 BMW Z4. Dealerships will tell you they must pull off the windshield to replace this, and charge you around $600. This cost me 45 dollars and 15 minutes to replace.
Just noticed my window stripping is cracking in multiple places. Thanks for making the video, looks easier than I imagined.
Rich Tarquini thank you for the comment. You are 100% correct. I was worried that the windshield would need to come out but the actual process was much easier than expected. Make sure to like and subscribe.
Thanks so much for this. I have just replaced mine for £34 and it was stress free. I cleaned the roof fabric too and now it's looking like new :D
Awesome. So glad that this helped.
Thank you so much for this! I just noticed that mine was all cracked up today. So glad that I don't have to spend $600 now. So easy!
Lisa Lisa Thank you and I’m so glad that this has helped. Make sure to subscribe and check out some other videos. :)
@@JohnEngel i will for sure!
Enjoying the videos John! Keep it up
Chris Finnegan Hey Chris. Thank you so much. I have been having a blast with these.
Extremely well done, like having a neighbor show you how to replace your windshield trim. Thank you very much for the time and effort in making this video, and the info of course.
Thank you so much for that. It made my night. Thank you again.
Thank you for the video. I commented about a week or two ago, asking you if you've sold your z4 or not. Yes, I believe I am still suffering from some water leak. According to realoem, the trim you just replaced, probably doesn't prevent water entering the front of the cabin. There are two separate windshield seals underneath the trim: one for driver and one for passenger side.
Thank you for the comment. I did sell my Z4. It was a great car but lots of little issues. I hate that you are still having water issues. You might need to have your windshield resealed.
@@JohnEngel Thank you for the response again. Yea.... most likely the windshield or the doors (from the windows) since I took out the entire back carpet and seats to observe water leak.
An enthusiast that SITS ON HIS CAR!
Philip Cleobury lol. I don't do that to all my cars. This is a daily so I take a little leeway with this one.
thanks for the info
Thanks! Doing it tonight.
Hopefully it will be super easy.
Do I need the adhesive for the molding?
subscriber 99!
Thank you so much. Can't wait to hit 100 and give some stuff away. Also on the Bentley video its not an automatic but I have added a leather shift boot for looks.
Also, did your new part have some glue on it already?
Having a hard time snapping in the top section. Can't tell if the what I am seeing is just the old trim that has broken apart and has stuck there. Should the new trim snap onto the body directly like the side trim does? Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks
JP Dizon you want to make sure that all of the old molding is out of the groove. If it's not then it will not seat itself. The molding should snap into place fairly easily.
Great thanks, so the trim should snap directly onto the body and not onto a black rubbery surface (that is prob old trim). Appreciate your help.
JP Dizon correct. Once you clean it out you will see the painted body. :)
Go under the top molding lip
1. What is the blue plastic tool that you didn't use? 2. I have a Z4M coupe. Does anyone have experience replacing this weatherstripping on a coupe? Thanks in advance.
Those are called trim removal tools. The coupe has a different style gasket from what I have been told.
You only used windex to remove the melted old adhesive?
Chabacano Maximus I removed the extra adhesive that got on the window with windex. The adhesive that was still in the grove was left there as I didn't add any new adhesive. There is enough pressure to hold the trim in place but a little leftover adhesive never hurt.
John Engel hey thanks John. I am gonna give it a go today.
Didn't seem to work for me as the corners wouldn't fit properly so I ended up cutting it which wasn't the right answer. Any advice?
The only other option is to use a heat gun. This should allow you to make the seal more flexible.
@@JohnEngel hairdryer and it was in!
@@clumpmonk very nice.
I just unsub'd than resub'd but I still wasn't number 100, dang! Anyways, keep um coming John.
Thank you and keep an eye out for my 100 subscriber drawing. I am going to put all 100 names into a bucket, or something, and pull one lucky winner. :)
Does this require any adhesive or is strictly a friction mount?
It’s strictly friction.
Thanks!! I just ordered it!
Do you have a recommendation for where to buy the cowling? Mine is utterly destroyed. haha
@@JohnEngel Just subscribed to your channel, too. Your car looks great. I just bought a 2005 and just getting started on cleaning it up.
@@paultavenner6464 awesome and thank you. Funny, you should mention that I looked at my cowl today and it also needs to be replaced. I haven’t searched yet but that will be soon.
@@JohnEngel It seems OEM is the way to go and they're not cheap parts, but important... It'll cost about $250 or so with shipping/tax.
Do you have a part number by chance?
I do not. I ended up just buying the one off Amazon.
@@JohnEngel OK, good to know!
You didn't have to glue the trim in? ... really?
patryk996 when I removed the original trim there was the black adhesive. When I put the new trim back in, I did not add any more.
Never do this to a Z4 Coupe (E86). You'll break the windshield or at least will be unable to insert the new gasket.
Sounds good.
finding out the hard way....I didn't crack the windshield but the new one is really hard to go back in. waiting to get the plastic molding tools to see if that works
