- In 1987 Gerard Mulligan succeeded Paul Andor in the role as hapless staffer that Dave would fire. There were six dismissals:
1. February 19, 1987 - fired for hair
2. February 26, 1987 - fired for changing opening segment
3. April 9, 1987 - fired for tightening phone mouthpiece
4. April 30, 1987 - fired for cutting hair
5. May 21, 1987 - fired for bringing show to Las Vegas
6. November 13, 1987 - fired for moving back and forth
This is why we fell in love with Dave. These early bits are pure gold.
Yeah this is wonderful stuff. I grew up loving Conan but am only recently diving into Dave.
I love how Gerry always does that nervous left hand twitch, good acting!
Man, do I miss this show.
Great stuff! There was one time Dave fired Sid, from the band, so Sid got a job in NBC's mail room and worked his way up to head of the network, then fired Dave :)
I bet that was greatness to watch
Wow, I had forgotten just how irreverent and funny Late Night was. What a cast of characters led by Dave! Thanks for posting!
Letterman 86-93 was gold
I love how the Boos are a part of the joke too.
That hanging joke is so hilarious. They couldn’t get away with that today
The funniest bit, was all the booing from the audience.
MAN, I miss this time before the internet / before cell phones. Wouldn't want to go back, but I do miss that era.
I would go back to before the smart phones
Letterman was so good at this stuff, his remotes were the best thing on TV,especially the ones with Rupert Jee
The last segment was best!
Late Night was definitely better and edgier than Late Show.
Thanks for posting. This is classic Letterman. Brings me back to when I'd look forward to every show (and tape them myself).
Letterman was so much better before he started sucking Barack and Michelle's cocks and hating the USA like the liberal POS that he is now.
Thanks for the video. These old Dave videos really take me back
Thank you Don for posting, and thanks Gerry for suggesting to bring the show to Vegas,it was an awesome time to be in the audience..30 years ago! where in the hell does the time go???!!
Casinobird Channel I miss EDGY Dave too!
It's like he went to CBS and Dave (& his insecurities) felt he had to put on his big boy pants. Despite THE FACT Leno never put on his :..( I'll always 💗 him but he did WAYYYYYYY less with going to other cites. Had the audiences FLOWN to him😳😳😳 for almost the last two decades like he suddenly couldn't AFFORD to spend a week wherever... etc
I used to love these episodes thank you for posting
The early days of David Letterman and Johnny Carson are the best ever!!! You are guaranteed to laugh and de-stress after dealing with stupid people all day.
Darkman you're so very right. I work as a janitor and the people I have to deal with. Sometimes rude and stupid. But when I watch these old clips about Gerry and old poor Henry getting fired by that heartless Dave makes it much, much better. I really do miss Late Night and Dave.
My God this is hysterically funny. Gerald Mulligan is the best
Letterman did some dark humor.
it was funny. Still is.
Leno might have won the rating war against Dave. But David Letterman will live on forever with these type of videos. Leno is Salieri and Letterman is Mozart
Gerry was amazing. Great character.
Gotta love that Gerard Mulligan energy. He makes it look so effortless. So good.
"it's a joke, it's comedy!"
so much great funny stuff i forgot that Letterman did
"It's 1987, the computer age." Ah yes, I remember my 8086 laptop from around then. Weighed 75 pounds and had like 64k of RAM. Something like that. Could run Battle Chess, though, that was the cool thing about it.
I bought a 3000 dollar Mac Power PC in the early 80s , they said it could do everything but fly, graphics movies, game building it had 8 Ram and couldn;t do crap lol , what a ripoff
@@williamburdon6993 Mine had a 10MB hard disk drive with my cyan/black monitor. 16KB ram i think
I remember when they came out with the G rated version of Battle Chess, chess. You can see why that version had such a hubbub around if.
This is a good one!
These collections are great. Thanks for bringing back some hilarious memories. Do you have a collection of Dave remembering something he forgot to do and he would run down the building stairs?
Not yet. And thanks!
The show that hosts itself! It's 1987! How strange and depressing that sounds now in 2018. Was it not just an overall happier time back then? No cell phones, no internet...at the very least it was more personable.
I never worked for Dave, but I did for Donahue. I wish he had pretended to fire me so I could’ve gone to discuss it with Dave.
Every late night show should have confetti falling at some point.
Ah, I hope you're getting paid for this. If not, may you be deified. Not one, not two, but SEVERAL brilliant bits where Gerard Mulligan gets fired by that heartless, cold blooded, Nurse Ratched of a boss that is David Letterman.
P.S. I just spotted the thumbnail for a video you posted titled, "Brother Theodore Complete 1982-1989"; and I am going to round up the pizza, popcorn, and beer hoping that I will sweat even more like a chunk of rancid pork upon, during, and after viewing. May you be sainted, knighted, and given a big, fat, fancy award for being a nice guy.
I think I'd prefer the cash. :)
But no, I'm not making a penny off of any of this. Enjoy your food!
Also, I see you've uploaded some Chris Elliott clips. If you'd like, see my CE list in my response here to 00bikeboy.
If and when I get the "cash", Mr. Giller, I shall send it to you forthright in a big and overstuffed, shiny and glistening manila envelope of the utmost quality. And I mean that from the bottom of my temporarily poor-as-a-church mouse heart.
On another note, I'm sure that my food will prove to be an indigestible prop since Brother Theodore's antics will cause me to blow many chunks over the course of his 3 hours and ten minutes plus marathon.
Thanks. I'm checking it out right now. Keep up the good work. Please.
I’m amazed that Gerry can keep a straight face. If he doesn’t, the bit is ruined.
On the other hand, if Bridget Jackson doesn't hide her face and run off in giggles, the bit is ruined!
this still feels like subversive and relevant humor. modern podcasts should be taking notes from these old clips of letterman
Starting at 2:13... true comedy gold.
Late Night with David Letterman = Anarchy
Watching Dave actually ACT is AWESOME!
I wonder if Tom Scopacasa is still confused and bewildered.
+Stuart Allard I recently got in touch with my good and lifelong friend Tom Scopacasa in order to find out whether he is either confused or bewildered. It turns out, he's both. I hope that answered your question.
Thanks as always. Is your apartment clearing out as you digitize these tapes?
Good one! :)
I only asked because I might pay solid money for the actual Donz's tape of an episode that changed my life.
"Might" always being the operative word. :) Which show are you looking for?
Who knew that Dave give "Russel Crowe" his FIRST job in Show Business ?
Remember the computer age?
1987, the computer age.
Well, THAT took a dark turn...
Somehow it's funny every time.
I dont think you could do a hanging joke like that today, people are much more sensitive
i forgot about Gerry getting fired..lolol
The wrongful termination lawsuit dragged on for months.
Wow. That’s dark
Dave got a lot more amped up firing Gerry vs firing Henry.
That hanging bit was “over the top”!
Too bad the current nighttime hosts have no originality or sense of humor. This was such a classic show.
Various duties!? Is Jordan Schlansky an homage to this bit?! Conan is always trying to fire him!!
14:26 That music! 🙃
Gerry the front pocket wallet man.
Straight men to Dave's genius.
Gerry is the Jordan Schlansky of the 80's with his "various duties"
See? Dave CAN act! A bit.
Don, what about 'The Arnie Barnes Saga'? That would be something. Especially for Arnie Barnes.
It's in the In box. :)
I hated the new opening segment too.
1:52 that's funny
3:33 Would be weird if you switched over to Letterman at this moment
Stolen from my tv show!!! Did that back in 1978!!!
It is Not often you get a wall sized photo blow up of your face at a party
7:23 Bridget Jones
Actually Bridget Jackson.
Her full compilation here: czcams.com/video/Fk6jbfzaSi8/video.html
Fires him "again"
so whose Gerry collection?
Not clear what you're asking.
Don Giller Looks like they're making a lame joke about the video title - "David Letterman Fires Gerry Collection". They're asking who 'Gerry Collection' is.
WHO'S
Back when the show was funny. Pls post more Chris Elliot clips.

Late Nite was so much better then the Late Show.
Does anyone else recall the show where Dave goes backstage and finds Gerry has hanged himself out of total despair?
Have you watched this video yet? It was in the hallway, not backstage. The second segment.
It's there alright. Thought they might be afraid to include that one in the current PC culture.
"They"?
You should put a disclaimer on this video so they won't click on it.
I thought NBC might have removed it from the shows archives the way they kept Seinfeld's Puerto Rican Day episode out of the syndicated reruns.
11 Jay Leno fans hated this video.
man , old american talk shows are funny as fuck i only ever got 2 see leno on fx yeaaaaars ago n never seen d wonder dat is letterman till youtube , dat gerry hangin himself bit had me laffin my ass off dats sum shit ud never gt away with today cos sum1s frend hung demselves n der offended by dis , bcos u gotta b offended by sumting jus 2 fit in these p.c concious times lol
Why does this lame skit keep making me laugh?
Letterman before he became "woke" was riveting comedy, now we live in the Age of Solipsism.
Shut up asswipe. People age & change. You fucking dopes always blaming everybody for everything that makes you angry. Go away
@John6yt not at all. I don’t go on social media and complain about people being “woke”
You loser
