- The Conspiracy Guy was Chris Elliott's first running character that ran for seven episodes on Late Night from October 6, 1983, until January 3, 1984. The security thugs who dragged him away were Late Night writers Joe Toplyn and Sandy Frank.
1. October 6, 1983: first introduced during a Viewer Mail segment
2. November 9, 1983: as part of a segment called "Reasons for Editing the Show"
3. November 23, 1983: as part of "Who Asked For It"
4. November 29, 1983: in the beginning of Dave's opening remarks
5. December 7, 1983: again during Dave's opening remarks; the woman being dragged out is Late Night Talent Coordinator Sandra Furton
6. December 29, 1983: as part of Viewer Mail
7. January 3, 1984: in the beginning of Dave's opening remarks, then, later in the show, a tribute and retrospective*
*In an earlier upload the powers-that-be removed the audio due to copyright restriction -- the music attached to the retrospective was Carly Simon's "Nobody Does It Better." So I removed that portion for this upload.
I love how they ended the Conspiracy Guy series like a beloved Broadway run had ended, complete with Chris Elliot in a smoking jacket and a girl bringing him flowers. Dave's first few years at NBC were so fresh and groundbreaking.
"Shaffer and the shredded documents" :)
Sandy Frank's work in The Fugitive Guy was amazing! I can't believe there wasn't a spin off.
Another great collage. Was saving this one. Thanks again, DG.
I always knew something was off about Connie Chung.
Right? I mean her whole family has been involved in shady doings from the get-go, as far back as when they first came to America and they... Hey, get your hands off me I'm trying to post something here, who do you think you are - let me go... Hey, he -- -
Karstens! Lol, well done, lmao
I miss Chris Elliott! He was so freakin under rated!
did you watch Schitt's creek? he is hilarious!
He shoulda been big. Cabin Boy basically blacklisted him. I actually liked it. It was like a stupid cartoon. It was ahead of it's time.
Cabin Boy was equal to Tom Greens Freddy Got Fingered.
Watch him on Schitts Creek.
The "apology" and Hal Gurnee's "okay, we got it, take him downstairs" was gold! 7:17
Gordon Cooper calls are freakin' hilarious. One of my favorite running gags.
Here's the complete Gordon Cooper collection: czcams.com/video/69HXvTcBYWo/video.html
I was sure this one was about to become a gag about Chris thinking the space program was faked.
these bits are the best. thanks for all the uploads.
Chris Elliott was ahead of the times
Never saw any of these before. Thanks!
YES!!! Thanks for sharing!
Dave and Chris complemented each other.
Plot twist: The conspiracy guy was right.
We do need to know more about Shaffer and the shredded documents.
They're behind a grassy knoll.
I remember seeing the very first one and the very last one when they first aired, but missed all the ones in between. Now here's the whole damned thing! Unbelievable.
The Conspiracy guy was a great routine.
Really appreciate all of your uploads. If you are worried about getting pulled off youtube for posting full episodes, please go to dailymotion. Much more under the radar. I don't think Dave has any rights to his NBC Late Night, thats in Carson's or NBC's hands. So your uploads and a handful of others is the only way we will probably get to see this.
+New Fun Sandwich Thanks; it seems that both NBC and the Carson people either don't know or don't care. Yet. Haven't heard of dailymotion, thanks.
All stations should be required to play “Strangers in the Night” during the Please Stand By graphic.
"Dave's Video Fun house" will never be surpassed.
"Not the manicure again, PLEASE, NOT THE MANICURE..."
Another Funny video Don . Thanks for sharing. Great editing, some fine work. Your collection is probably like the Carson collection stored in that underground saltmine. Just wall to wall Vhs tapes. How did you know to record so much??
Padraig Glennon Thanks. It's worse than wall-to-wall. :) Why? Why not? :)
Don Giller that's so cool . I never got NBC Letterman, here in Ireland. CBS Letterman is were my Letterman journey began. TV station over here picked up how red hot the whole Letterman/Leno battle was. He (Letterman) was is funny!!! Also I never realized how hilarious Chris Elliott is. I knew was funny but these clips /montages are new level funny!!! 😂
Padraig Glennon That's great. This is one of the reasons I'm sharing these -- so that those like you can discover now what we knew then.
ohhhh the band at the end too killing it. Need an official online compilation so bad.
The scary thing is it’s all true
the same man is always sitting next the conspiracy guy in the audience.
For sure, the best days of Lettermen
“Green Room” 😆 Dave’s unexpected guest like Chris made the show
YOU KNOW VERY WELL I'M NOT THE NEW DRUMMER
Connie Chung"s Gang of 12 made the conspiracy go away. I want to get to the bottom of this.
Chris is ahead of his time. Look at what is going on today.
Call them 'cookers' now!
Oh bloody hell, that was funny. Letterman was so damn creative.
"None Dare Call It ' Conspiracy' "
I think the perfect ending to this would have been right as the three of them sit down next to Dave Dave decides he's going to reveal what the big conspiracy is and just starts to get started talking and suddenly it says "please stand by"...
How did I never see this?!!!!!!
I remember the daze of smoking weed and watching Letterman at 12:30am and Chris Elliot was just an added bonus.I miss those days
Oh, wow.
Laughing so hard I'm crying!
I remember watching the one where Gordon Cooper called in with my college room mates and laughing our asses off.
But, that picture is of John Glenn! www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/98/Gordon_Cooper_2.jpg/220px-Gordon_Cooper_2.jpg&imgrefurl=en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordon_Cooper&h=275&w=220&tbnid=zBekZolRme15zM:&tbnh=160&tbnw=128&usg=__BafuZOYwmeMqhScGzEjuB8KueAk=&vet=10ahUKEwic6YP0xMPWAhWqr1QKHccoA0cQ_B0IsgEwEw..i&docid=Jl84XjYFUyV6IM&itg=1&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwic6YP0xMPWAhWqr1QKHccoA0cQ_B0IsgEwEw
I think the plug was pulled on The Conspiracy Guy a bit prematurely. The other running gags Elliot did afterwards were good too, but surely this was the best of them. This one bit was especially funny. Nice to see it once again 7:33
They should have brought this bit back when Dave was on CBS, but I'm sure NBC would have objected. #conspiracy
THAT'S part of the conspiracy! That the bit was cut short before it had a chance to really develop. Another potential conspiracy: When they show the still photograph of astronaut Gordon Cooper, it appears that the man in the image is actually John Glenn. If I'm right, this fits in neatly with Shaffer and the shredded documents, Wendel and the money laundering, and Connie Chung's committee of 12. The conspiracy was so widespread that it even touched NASA!
Was this the first of the Gordon Cooper phone calls on the last Conspiracy Guy?
wecontrolthevideo it was.
These were the days of Dave's "helmet" of hair.
He wasnt kidding in this bit
Chris Elliots was inspired... he tapped into something... he was the GOAT... I think they call it"the zeitgeist" not mention Calvert Deforest, Hal Gurney and Bill Wendle... Dave was surrounded by geniuses
90 days of pure genius!
"I think you know who I am."
5:47 Paul and Dave establish the date as Wednesday, December 7th. The problem here is that December 7th was a THURSDAY in 1983! The conspiracy guy was definitely on to something!
Actually, no: December 7 did indeed fall on a Wednesday in 1983.
@@dongiller he's lying to you, everyone! It's a lie. All lies! Ask him about the green room. Ask him about Connie Chung's Secret Committee of 12!
Oh man, I forgot Steve Jordan drummed on Letterman. That guy is a beast.
I am fascinated by "Connie Chung's Secret Council of 12"
At 3:00 the gray haired guy with glases looking back at Chris Elliott. Looks like Swedish tv personlity Lasse Holmqvist. Kan det stämma fellow svenskar?
Chris Elliott started growing his beard somewhere between November 9th and November 23, 1983
...or so They claim...
Why is this guy not a superstar
Next up on InfoWars: Connie Chung's Secret Committee of Twelve!
This is like watching Conan O'Brien's parents do it
Lol the dudes in navy blue jumpsuits
If you've ever attended a small community town board or city council meeting , Chris's character is based on a real guy.
I think you know who I am
Well,,, we know there is one now...
The Truth is out there
It's under the seats
Chris Elliott is hilarious.
A-Ha!!! The Conspiracy Guy ends with an Astronot's thanks to the leading characters of the skit. Too funny.
They guy becomes more relevant every day
Little did we know, but by 2016 these types would become a voting bloc...
@blessed armadillo, 8257-if only Putin and Ricky Vaughn hadn’t tricked me into voting against Saint Hilary
56% of the US by 2023
Even worse in 2024
Cookers!
Torturing government dissenters is funny!
The O.G. Eric Andre...
Anyone know if the Conspiracy Guy character was based on Harvey Pekar? If memory serves, Letterman once had to shut down an interview segment with Pekar after he let loose on GE. I adore Chris Elliott -- for sure one of the funniest persons ever--but the conspiracy guy was probably my least favourite of his characters. That and the end of the Brando days, when Letterman cut short a skit that was just silly. Bananas!
Unlikely; this Chris character preceded Harvey’s appearances.
The conspiracy that Dave was going to be blackmailed for his affair with Stephanie? Hmmm... Not as far-fetched as we were led to believe.
Funny because it's true!)
now conspiracy theories are mainstream.
I feel like I'm watching the early inspiration for Fox News.
I'd say it could also be inspired by CRT activists who insist racism is everywhere...
This entire bit predicted crazed CZcams commenters and the lunatics we have going on right now!
Yep. Our Government never lies. The nerve of some people!
It's actually not about the government but, sure@@richardpowell1772
Chris Elliott had the conspiracy type to a tee. Now they are all over the place.
"they are all over the place"? Who's the conspiracy guy now?
@@simonbagel CRT activists.
I long for days when this guy was a joke. Now he's half the country.
Wow, you said it. How bizarre is that.
You're obviously not paying attention to current events then lol
What have u done with The Tonite show Colbert?! That's a real conspiracy
Colbert has nothing to do with The a Tonight Show.
That's what he wants you to believe.
What a timeless approach. Just have the subject escorted out by well dressed in-shape guys in dark glasses. Alas, doing the same thing to his neighbor in the audience was, by comparison, a general turdblossom for Chris to use in adorning his tired conspiracy-bashing gag, (which I incidentally hate.) More fake shrimp, please!!!
Worded so annoyingly bad, it's incoherent
And now this is the norm in all our media.
Joe and Sandy as the 'uniformed goons', and Chris Elliot. Proof that America was desperate for *any* entertainment.
We are desperate for entertainment now, in these times we live in!
hilarious character, in 1993-1994 these people were laughed at, now they run the republican party.
If you can't see it, your eyes are closed.
Last I heard he's still rotting in Guantanamo Bay.
Dave's show was so refreshingly funny and original in the 1980's. I wish all celebrities would keep their political opinions to themselves, and not use their celebrity as a soapbox.
Did you forget about all those times he called Bush dumb and never criticized Obama?
They're citizens too. And as citizens, they have every fucking right to criticize an administration they're unhappy with under the first amendment of the constitution.
He was trying to expose Epstein and we laughed at him
Remember when nutty conspiracy theorists were the stuff of comedy and weren't elected President?
This guy would have a popular right wing podcast right now.
And he’d be right about 95% of the time.
We used to laugh at conspiracy nuts now we elect them.
Tell that to Vince Foster..
@@baldwinwallace4926 You mean the guy who committed suicide even though conspiracy morons, and Clinton haters, think otherwise? Check the real facts,he offed himself.
The original Qanon member.
Ah, I miss the days when completely wacko conspiracy nuts were considered comedy fodder instead of being given the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
What would the conspiracy guy talk about nowadays? 😸
