  • Mario Cristobal and Miami are gearing up for what could be a pivotal turnaround effort in 2023 after a disappointing debut season in Coral Gables last fall. On Late Kick Live Ep 393 Cristobal was the featured guest on the Pate State Speaker Series. In this episode he joined Josh Pate for an extended sit down to discuss expectations around the Miami program, what it takes behind the scenes to win at the highest level, how chaotic it can be hiring new staffers or sometimes trying to keep your current staff, and much more. How do you think Miami will fare this fall? People love to talk down on Miami and Cristobal, but unlike them, I have major respect for Cristobal as a man. He’s a Miami native who is a relentless recruiter and wants nothing more to bring the U back to where it once was. At Oregon, he created a team with his identity as a former Offensive Lineman (gritty, tough-minded, relentless, powerful, run-first, etc). And it was enough to win the PAC 12 twice. Yes I understand he had Justin Herbert, but y’all gotta understand the way these teams were built through HIS image and to his credit, it was enough. However, I believe his last stint with Oregon and his first year at Miami have shown him that it’s time to finally adapt. He knows that his Pistol/Power-Gap scheme isn’t going to cut it anymore in this era of college football. Even Clemson changed their philosophy and they’re seeing it pay dividends with recruiting. Grabbing Shannon Dawson will be the best decision long term that Cristobal has made so far. Guidry will also be a phenomenal Defensive Coordinator.

Wanted to share something I posted on Reddit awhile back:
I wanted to write this because I know that you have heard so much negativity from many very vocal Ducks fans online. First of all, the negative and the belligerent are always the loudest, and our minds tend to emphasize the negative five times more than the positive. (a true fact) Those that are positive will rarely make a post like this but we do exist and are likely the majority. I wanted to extend some good will and tell you how I honestly feel. I know I haven't set up my flair but if you take a look at my post history, you will see there is no doubt that I love the Ducks a great deal.
Please remember that so many of us do love and believe in Cristobal, you just don't hear from us. Please give Mario time - I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that he has what it takes to succeed, and I will ALWAYS support him and root for Miami. I disagree highly with throwing shade at the man for going home. If I was the HC of Miami and Oregon called me home, I would have to take the call.
Yes, every human being on earth has faults and I am sure that Mario Cristobal has his faults when it comes to coaching. I am NOT sure however that he cannot learn from them; usually highly successful people are able to learn from their mistakes as long as their success was not simply given to them, and I know that success was NOT simply given to Mr. Cristobal.
I also wanted to tell you a story that you may not have heard before, which is the origin story of Mario Cristobal being chosen as the head coach of the Oregon Ducks. When Taggart left for Florida State, the vast majority of the team PETITIONED the Oregon AD to make Cristobal the head coach. His players believe in him, not just enough to sign for him and play for him, but to work together to convince the Athletic Department / Athletic Director to make him the Head Coach above all other options. That is simply unheard of. Moreover, when he left for Miami, he did NOT make an effort to take the players he recruited to Oregon with him. He told them to stay the course they were on at Oregon, and they did. Not a single player left Oregon for Miami - and that is OBVIOUSLY because of what Cristobal said to them. He is a good and honorable man and deserves respect for that alone among many other things.
Cristobal was responsible for the recovery of the Oregon program, and for showing the Athletic Department that recruiting top-ranked classes to Eugene, Oregon was not just possible but extremely doable. He won two Pac-12 Championships and a Rose Bowl (Oregon's 3rd Rose Bowl victory in a row!) and for that and all that I listed above he will not be forgotten. If the ball bounced a different way a couple of times he could have accomplished even more than that. Oh and by the way, he was undefeated against our biggest rivals, the Washington Huskies. He also was undefeated against Chip Kelly. Last but not least, he gave us our FIRST AND ONLY victory against Ohio State, in THEIR house. (I'll never forget the video of him after that game, jubilantly shouting "Go Ducks!!" with a degree of joy that cannot be described) All of that means more to us than I can possibly express and I was heartbroken to see him leave.
That being said, MC will forever have my respect and loyalty. Once a Duck, always a Duck. He is a Duck, and he is a Hurricane. He does not have to choose. He may be a Hurricane first, but he will ALWAYS be an Oregon Duck as well.
Give him a chance. The man went home and he wants Miami to succeed more than anyone in the world - I truly believe that and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize the truthfulness of that statement. I guarantee you that he will work even harder for his alma mater than he worked for the Oregon Ducks, and it was obvious that he worked pretty goddamn hard for Oregon. He is an extremely passionate, charming and intense individual. He is not perfect. No human being is.
Sometimes, things take time. Sometimes, they're fairly quick (Lincoln Riley for example) but all situations are different, nuanced, and there's a lot of detail that people tend to over-simplify. The real world is a complicated place, and it takes a very large sample-size to determine the truth of many matters. And remember that how you treat him will influence your recruits online; they check reddit and read social media even more than we do.
Give the man a chance. I know he will succeed. To any potential recruits reading this: you should be proud to play for the Oregon Ducks, but you should ALSO be PROUD to play for the Miami Hurricanes.
    Sincerely,
    an Oregon Duck
Fly Ducks Fly and Go Hurricanes!

He was able to bring in some blue chip offensive linemen to Oregon, but he was never able to bring in that big bruising running back that is required for his style of offense. Oregon had always been known for the smaller RB, so it was always difficult for them to recruit a large RB. Outside of Freeman, who played for Oregon during Cristobal’s first year as their OC, their running backs averages between 190-205 lbs.
At Miami, He should have a better chance at recruiting a large RB. If I’m a high school running back that weighs in at 230 lbs, and have 4-5 stars next to my name, I’m begging Miami to offer me!

All I hear is politico speak. He's recruiting well. But for God's sakes, coach games. Win games. Need to be back in the top 10. Bottom line. His seat is getting warm after 5-7

Mario won a pac10 championship during the COVID year when teams weren't even really playing. Him and Willie Taggart has the same coaching abilities... Miami will have all that talent like they always had and will still be trash😂

Another stupid 🧌. How bad is your life? Mario won 2 PAC 12 titles,a 12 win season,PAC 12 coach of the year, a Rose bowl win all in the PAC 12 not PAC 10.

Wtf does that mean they “weren’t really playing”? You think the teams weren’t trying to win because Covid was going on? Makes sense

Pate this is like meeting with the literal devil dude?? There is no one worse save for maybe Kiffin than Mario. A team that buys an entire roster but can’t win anything

Ruiz is trying, but it's very hard bc the city has to approve it and there's no land to build on.
