    Pretty impressive shots wide open. Nicely done Tomas. I have this lens and love it. I find on stop below wide open is a tiny bit sharper but not super noticeable. This is also a super useful landscape photography lens. It doesn't work so well with the 1.4 extender unless at F11 (and is still touch softer than without). One of my favourite lenses (and I have a lot to choose from).

    Had this lens loved it, traded it when I went mirrorless for the 100-500, now in love with the new one. The 100-400 was great, I too tried the 600 f/4 and not having that zooming option drove me nuts, but if you know you going long range that 600 is incredible.

    Fantastic review, we have the Sigma 150-600mm C on a Canon 90D, after using it this weekend at an airshow, I was very disappointed with the auto focus and also the weight too, trying to track very fast moving aircraft, it was an extremely tiring day with such a heavy lens. So seeing this video, am seriously thinking of upgrading to a Canon 100-400mm mk2 lens. Thank you.

    Great review! I love the 100-400 II on the R5. I think the high resolution, fast AF, and ability to take the 1.4 III well make the R5 the best body for this lens. Unlike DSLRs the R5 doesn't require any AF microadjustments so it really makes the extender shine. The ability to shoot in apsc mode on the r5 and still have 17 mp when needed also is helpful for framing/autofocus when you know you need to crop a lot.

    • @amateurphotographer1096
      @amateurphotographer1096 Před 2 lety +3

      One of my favourite canon lenses. I have purchased an R6 since and have been using this lens with the EF 1.4mk III extender. I recently purchased the 2xmk III which I owned before and sold after 1 day as it was pretty bad on the 5Dmk III. To my surprise it is reasonably sharp on the R6 and way way better compared to my experience with the DSLR before. Good thing about using this on r5/56 + the 1.4mkIII or 2xmkiii is the amazing high ISO performance of these cameras. With my r6, I am shooting at 12,800 or 16,000 and still get results that are surprisingly amazing! At iso 3200 these cameras would blow any canon DSLR except the 1dx series. And not to mention the amazing animal eye AF on these cameras that works really well with the 1.4mk III and 2x mk III...

    • @sswildlifevideos
      @sswildlifevideos Před 2 lety +1

      @@amateurphotographer1096 Agree with all your points! The R5 is a strong performer up to iso 6400, and maybe even 10000, which is nice for a hi-res body. I hope we get some RF lenses like the 500 DO and 150-600 well below the 10000 dollar mark for a little longer glass!

      Please don't think you need a full frame body to make good pictures! Especially for wildlife photography, an APS-C body (think Canon 90D, 7D, 7D II) will actually be better. A full frame isn't always an advantage.
      But doupdate your body for a lens like that; check out the Canon 7D, 250$ and amazing specs.
      Though, such a lens is probably overkill if you're atm using a 200D, so I'd rather get a less top-range lens, e.g. a 70-300 (L), before dropping 2k on that thing. :)

    Weird how you put out this video yesterday . Last few weeks I have been looking at upgrading my canon 70-300 is II usm with either the L version or a 70-200 f2.8 L with extender or this 100-400 you reviewed . I just cannot decide , I shoot running sports and random stuff , wildlife included with a 6DII and 7DII , it's terror deciding , I must win lotto .

      One thing you may want to look into is renting both lenses for a day and trying them out. I was able to rent the 100-400 from a local camera shop for a weeklong trip to Kings Canyon/Sequoia National Parks, and was really pleased with it. I also have the 70-200 f2.8 L (no extender) and love that lens, too. My camera store will apply the price of the rental to the purchase of the 100-400 lens if I buy within 30 days. Not sure I'm going to make the leap yet.

    Hi it's a little misleading for the newbies when you show those initial images taken on the 90D (an APS-C body) and say you took the images at 400mm when in reality you took them at an effective 640mm focal length due to the 1.6x crop from that body. Imo you should put in the text on the image that it was an effective 640mm.

      I was contemplating the contemporary model of this lens, which is half the cost of this Canon lens. I was concerned about the build quality and weatherproofing, along with the slower f stop & focusing speed. Also wasn't sure how well it would stack up compared to L series Canon glass. Nothing else matters if one lens is significantly sharper than the other, IMO. The sharpness of this Canon lens in this video & another video I was looking at are WAY sharper than imagines Sigma uses even in their promotional material. I have a feeling this lens is so sharp, that it negates the extra focal distance of the Sigma.
