Holy smokes. My parents taught me that if I couldn’t say anything nice, then to keep it to myself. So here’s my sincere nice comment: that owner is extremely lucky to have you making that thing drivable! As for the other comments that I was tempted to make on the quality of that thing, well, Mama’s and Daddy’s rule is being applied…….

You're a god!! Saving a customers life! They probably cut off the body and thought they were keeping the best part. And they drove the thing 80mph everywhere they went. Their Guardian angel was worn out!! Cheaper to build new than repair that crap.... but you know that...

Interesting what people build and "drive" and think they are safe to do so. But then again people have to start somewhere. Keep up the good work

Man this is gonna be awesome! I had a 47 willys cj, a 302 ford, and a dodge 5 speed that i was going to turn into a rat rod when i was in highschool. I ended up having to sell it to help with financial problems with my family. What i wouldnt give to have it all back now lol
There is still stuff out there. Never give up and you'll find it again!

YES YES YES... THIS IS COOL 😎 👍. Jeeps make great Rat Rods. Your right needs some work no question about it. But to visualize the finished product... ah yeah it's cool. Going to be glued to watching this build.

I am all about saving the classics and customs. This one would challenge my patience. Should be pretty cool when finish. God's speed to you.
I love the understatement, 'It leaves something to be desired'. I'd feel unsafe sitting in it, let alone starting the engine. i'll follow with interest!

These things are awesome and fun. I built mine in 2018. It’s on air and has a engine and trans from a box truck. Used many parts from the box truck. Daily driven a lot too. Actually have a video of it on my channel. Excited to see more of this project. Don’t cut the door jam. I’ve seen this done and it looks goofy. Go behind it to stretch body.

J. C. Whitney used to have a nice 1” thick Jeep tub. That would have been a nice investment. Now, other companies make them, but you’d have to make a deal with them to donate one.

Saw this video and had to click. It amazing what you can do with these vechicals. Me and my dad are actually going to be doing one but are is a Jeep Fleet Van. It 90 percent still good or so all original.

I would just strip it down and start over and do it right to make it safe.
It's the yadayadayada that gets expensive. We had a voodoo stick we waved over stuff that needed to cost more.

That rat was a quick build with 100% whatever tools and parts were laying around nothing fancy. With that being said that car was beat hard full throttle all the time and would carry the front driver wheel all the way down the street. Really wasn't as sketchy to ride in as it looks. You don't have to build pristine shit to have a good time. That thing with the original body was a ripper. 100% ratrod.

Why not shorten and fishplate the chassis to get the rear wheel well centered in the right place instead of lengthening the body tub? Jeep Flat fenders look sportier short. I am guessing the wheelbase is over 100" it should be 80"
Adding to the tube has made this thing every comfy even with the seat super low and the owner being a bigger guy like me.
I have a frame. If you just want to start over. . ..

Hello, What year & make Toyota rear end is best to get for a rat rod project?
For the most part all the truck and 4runner ones are pretty good. Also keep in mind as they get newer, they get wider.

So why not shorten the chassis a bit instead of stretching the body in two places I mean it may stop looking like a Willy's jeep if it's too stretched right I get stretching the back part for the tank oh yeah you needed more feet room as well so I guess that answers my own question. Well carry on then!

Well, there is a lot of info on CZcams you have my channel Rat rod Bob, Make it Kustom, Corey Wheat, and many others. I'd start off watching some of them, and then at some point you just have to do it! You'll make some mistakes I'm sure we all have just deal with them as they come and have fun with it?

That can vary a lot from project to project.

2x4 box tube
Holy crap that thing is a disaster. I would have threw the chassis away and started over. What a cobbled mess. Cold bubble gum welds, tubes stacked and welded with no fishplates, some ugly c channel for spring mounts. Scary!
I'd love to know what the customer paid for this and then what the total cost was for all the work you did once it was all finished

A fishplate is what you call is a flat piece of metal added to 2 joining rails or beams

This is the kind of "build" that gives rat rods a bad name. You've definitely got your work cut out for you with it.
What a death trap... whoever slapped this thing together had no concern for their safety or anyone else’s....
You’d be better off just starting from scratch and building a brand new chassis...
Sure hope the guy didn’t pay a whole lot for this thing,,, cause he’s going to have to shell out some serious cash in order for it to be built correctly... all new or junkyard parts,, either way it’s time and money...

How the hell does someone invest that much energy into sticking together such a huge smoldering pile of crap? Can’t wait to see how your magical 🪄 powers transform this “creation” into something drivable. And I pray the genius who welded this originally has sold his torch and welder and now just watches baseball.
I can't be that hard on the person who did this. I just hope that they learned from it and do better next time.
That rat was built from nothing to driving and tagged in a few months in a apartment parking lot no shop no fancy tools. Worked just fine for for all the abuse it took.

We appreciate friends with skills willing to volunteer their time to tinker with projects in the shop.
