I feel like these types of to-do lists are manageable for personal life. At work, where I manage products and have several projects going, I go through a whole different flow. I spend 30 min on Monday setting goals and tasks for the week to achieve my quarterly goals and ultimately yearly goals. I prioritize what must get done this week and then log any new action items from meetings/ requests. Every morning I look through and quickly reprioritize the day if something urgent came up the day before. This has been working for me for years.

Anything that has more than one step is not an action, it's a project. And you can't 'do' a project, but if you're clear on the next action, then that's what you focus on. This is the factor that differentiates a good to-do list and a bad one. Have a great day!

    Hey Thomas, great work!
Really liked the video! A non-joke commentary, for a change. One addition I would do to the flow chart, that is specifically important for code development, is the cost of automation. I know you already have repeatable tasks in mind, but I really think adding something like "Is this task recurrent enough to automate?" would be neat! Hope you get your 6-digit book deal!

Would you consider doing a whole video on automation? Someone below suggested it, too. Idk if this makes sense, but I understand the surface level concept of automation based on what you said in this video, and I've learned about some specific stuff like templates and Notion integrations from your other videos. However, I'm having a hard time connecting my conceptual understanding of automation to my practical understanding of it. This is especially true when it comes to figuring out what to automate and if certain tasks actually aren't worth it due to the time and energy required. Plus, it seems like the 4 Ds you described in this video can apply to either one-time tasks or recurring tasks, while automation can only apply to recurring tasks. That made it a bit of a challenge, for me, to see how it fits into something like processing your to-do list on a weekly basis.

My only concern, which is more about GTD itself rather than the video, is that if you follow GTD idea accurately, you end up being a person who does under-two-minute tasks the whole day. For example, I may have 3-5 tasks with a comparable level of urgency, but I will work on them in an order that takes into account that my ability to focus (and exercise discipline) is limited.

We just have to accept we are only going to complete a few of them, so they need to be the more important ones. When I was a music student I spent a lot of time in the music library (yes, real books and LP recordings, 1970). I would walk thru the aisles of books ("stacks"), entire sections of just the works of Haydn, Schubert, Mozart, Beethoven, and so on. They had no access to what we call technology. Just paper, pen, and a small keyboard instrument, or just their mind to imagine the sounds. They outperformed anyone living today, yet we have technology. Tchaikovsky is a good example of creativity. When he was a boy his governess (he was from aristocratic background) taught him the discipline of scheduling his day, and keeping to it without exception. So, as he grew up he would compose for a set number of hours each day, take lunch, dinner, and after dinner entertainment with friends. When he completed his Sleeping Beauty ballet he said: "My arms have raised a mountain", referring the months of work sitting at his piano and writing down the notes on its music stand. Without his commitment to discipline it would not have happened.

I just read a list of “100 Things To Do Before You Die”...
I was quite surprised that “Yell for help” wasn’t one of them.

Thanks! And yep - it’s coming as a series instead of one video. My first draft was an hour long so I’m splitting it up instead of trying to cut out important details.

Automation definitely belongs there as a separate category, especially with so much technology available to help us work better.
