  • I'm serious, nothing crazy to see here, just a new chainring from Garbaruk that will adore my crank for the foreseeable future. I will of course check the weight, but the more nerdy thing if a bit of a noise test and to see how much offset this ring is compared to my Old Easton ring.

    So just a followup after some more sessions indoors. The smallest cog I definitely can say is noisier, the biggest cog might be a smidge noisier as well. I still need to try some more adjusting, do more riding (and cleaning), maybe a few more A-B tests and do some rides outside to make my mind up about this. I also have some other ideas to try and make is quiet as possible (Shifting is unaffected btw). So will try and do a long term follow up eventaully.

      I went from a Praxis Zayante to Shimano GRX crankset because the clicking noise from the Zayante was irritating me. (I've got sensitive ears...) Best side-grade ever! Perhaps you should give the GRX one-by a try if chainring noise is something you think is somewhat important. :) Another reason for you to spend money! BTW, you should consider asking VOID for sponsorship. You are the reason why half my closet is stuffed full of VOID jerseys.....

    7:05. Flip that wrench over, bro. The movable end of the wrench should not be on the outside when applying force, but inside. The fixed end is stronger and will reduce the risk of rounding off the corners of the bolt or nut. Same goes for removal (5:09). "Garbaruk" sounds like the name of a wild animal. I wouldn't have known it is a chain ring brand if you just said it casually on the street! "Oh, there goes a garbaruk!" The beginning of the video looks like a scene from Le Grand Bleu.

    Also, absolute black recommends you buy 2 or 3 chains and swap them in order every month or so to extend the life of your rings and cassette. They say it's the chain growth and grit that wears the rings out much faster than they should be worn. Also, this lets you put on a perfectly clean chain without manual cleaning. You could soak your used chain and use something like a sonic cleaner on dirty chains while you ride your fresh clean chain.

      Seriously? You do realize that the chain wears faster than the other components right? And yes, the dirt causes the wear, therefore keep your drivetrain clean. There's no need to have 3 sets of components laying around. AB makes some rediculous claims. If they made a cassette they would tell you to buy 3 of those too.

    I just purchased this exact setup (NIB) from a local racer on Craigslist, and I'm wondering if the offset ever gave you problems with shifting into your lowest cog? I definitely notice the noise and the shifting is excellent between the other 10 cogs, but it really does not want to drop into the 11t.
    In your experience, did the offset affect your small-cog shifting, or do I just have more adjusting to do with the limits and shift position?

    My two cents concerning 1x conversions: some narrow-wide chainrings are indeed noisier than others. Other factors also come into play, such as the chain model (and brand) used and the length of the chainstays. However, most issues appear when using the largest sprocket (or the two largest sprockets), and they are also the most annoying ones. Imagine how dreadful it is to grind your guts out in your lowest gear, while climbing a monster slope, and having to hear a constant and annoying grinding noise coming from your chainring. That's why I think your noise comparison video should have been made when the chain was on the largest sprocket, not a middle one, and with some trainer resistance.
    More on topic, I know from a fellow forum user that Garbaruk chainrings (in his case, the Melon oval one) are indeed noisier than what he previously had (I believe an SRAM one) when the transmission is on the two largest sprockets. I've used two otherwise identical B.O.R. narrow-wide chainrings on two different bikes, but with identical chains and similar sprockets, and ironically the one with the shorter chainstays was also more silent. Currently, I'm using a setup with a regular (non narrow-wide) inner ring and a small braze-on chain catcher from Praxis Works. Far less noise, no chain issues so far, LIGHTER (about 15g less than a NW chainring)

  • @alexandra4334
    @alexandra4334 Před 3 lety +1

    My Garbaruk 40T oval was very noisy. Yours sounds fine. Garbaruk does not accept returns, which stinks. Equivalent Wolf Tooth I have no issues now. But beware of Garbaruk their customer service is bad, roll of the dice. The teeth are unnecessarily tall by 2 or 3mm. If you look close at the leading and trailing edge of the wide teeth on the Garbaruk, they are squared and not shaped nearly as much as SRAM or Wolf Tooth chainring. I think overall the more basic machining of the Garbaruk chainring is going to result in more noise with some chains. And Garbaruk could mot recommend any specific chain they say would work best. They were no help just refused a return or replacement.
