- A conversation between Dr. Lauren Kilroy-Ewbank and Dr. Steven Zucker in front of a lusterware dish, second half of the 15th century, tin-glazed and luster-painted earthenware, made in Valencia, Spain, 38.4 cm diameter (The Metropolitan Museum of Art)
Nice to see this here. Greetings from Valencia!
@Sally Isabel Boyer Howdy! I miss Texas....
You are fantastic as usual and, indeed, this ceramic reminds me of a golden plate, capable of reflecting the light in the gloomy and stinky medieval mansions, of course, there was no other utilitarian purpose for it.
Beautiful objects. Thank you for this video. 💙💙💙
Shiny!
The Met has a section dedicated to Renaissance ceramics..? 😅 I've got to see what else is in this place someday, lol.
I'm so mad that I read "Murcia" as "'Murica" AGAIN. And the "shiny" edit was unexpected and funny.
I tend to be pretty mild and reserved when it comes to decoration, but this makes me want to embrace colorful, patterned items too.
Absolutely Fantastic !!!
Very well done. Thank you
Beautiful!
A word about the technique resulting in luster would be good.
Absolutely exquisite! An object that reflects the history of Spain. Islamic history and heritage in Spain have a big scope and is deed rooted and this plate refers it masterful. Even the Spanish language to this day have a lot of words that comes straight from Arabic, specially words used for comfort objects like for example, almohada (pillow), alfombra (carpet), ect. Needs to be noted that “La expulsión de los Moros” (Muslims Expulsion) that happened in Spain before the Spanish conquest of America was a painful and dark historic moment by which Muslims where persecuted, tortured, expelled and “converted”. Spain lost a lot as a whole after the Muslim where expelled but as we can see it here, culture and history can’t be erased.
The Islamic plate at about 2:14 with the birds is my favorite piece shown in this.
The moors were invaders, they were pushed out
Yes, that was extreme. But remember how the Muslims got there - by invasion. Tariq gave his name to Gibraltar. Historians tend to call Moorish Spain a golden age, overlooking both the invasion and persecution of non-Muslims.
