      @@HenryTheBoilermaker3rdYear Ok. I don't know the relationships of these people, or if G&H Studios are also friends with Podcastage. I just assumed G&H Studios was the friend Mike is refering to in the video, and also sound engineer on the TV shows mentioned and not affiliated with DPA. I am also assuming the purpose of lending the gear for tests is not commercial interest but proffesional interest or "fun". :)

    High end boost might also be useful for if it is inside a blimp with a fuzzy cover on it. Fuzzy covers and blimps filter high frequency so it may primarily be there simply to compensate for blimps and maintain its "ruler flat" frequency response. As a VO artist you probably don't have to concern yourself with blimps since most of your work is done in a booth, but it's something sound engineers have to consider, and a high end boost could save them extra post production work.

  • @kirbymurdstone4925
    @kirbymurdstone4925 Před 7 lety +15

    DPA got their start making test microphones (they were known as B&K back then). Ruler flat response, and very wide frequency response, and no noise, (literally, their noise floor is only a couple db above the theoretical limit). They have taken that knowledge and are now producing microphones for recording and live production. These are the most accurate mics you can buy, and you pay dearly for that. I like how they work with your voice, But honestly I'm not sure it is worth the cost over the Sennheiser.

      DPA is more boomy and muddy, 416 is much more clear. 416 is just a better mic even tho it might seem sibilant, 416 just might seem sibilant at a times but it is never sibilant.

    • @distortingjack

      The 416 has less low end because it has a high-pass cut built-in. What you describe as clarity is a lower treble boost.

    • @TechReflex
      @TechReflex Před 3 lety

      @@distortingjack Yeah that's what I noticed too, but MKH has a presence boost, so it's not necessarily a result of it being lower in quality. DPA does sound better though, it kind of sounds clearer even though it has less presence.

    Wow. Great review! That thing is incredible. The 416 is so overrated. If I needed something tiny and couldn't afford a Sphere L22, I'd be seriously looking at the 4018. The DPA addresses everything I don't like about the 416. It has depth and detail that the 416 kills. If you can't hear a MAJOR difference, keep listening! But, since the Sphere can give me a hyper-cardioid pattern with the sound of an M49 or a Telefunken 215, I can't see scraping pennies for this one!

    You need to study your topic (and actually look closely at the frequency response in the spec sheet) before you put up these reviews. Regarding the HF boost switch being a boost above 5kHz? The frequency response actually ramps up gradually by about 5dB from about 2KHz-8kHz where it peaks, then rolls off again. Duh! - you actually supplied us with the graph where this is self-evident. Also, a lot of what you talk about would be 101 for most people watching this kind of overview of a high-end mic. I think we know about the utility of presence boost and bass roll-off. The money, as it were, is in how good is off-axis colouration, side rejection, self-noise and the general timbre of the mic. Such things can be demonstrated, which is what one would hope for in this. Quote: "I don't have a lot of information". Well, we heard your voice through the mic, so that's a plus at least. The rest could be gleaned from inspecting the DPA spec sheet. So I must agree with your self-assessment. Thanks anyway.
