This was adopted as standard issue by the Bundeswehr (German Army) in 2004, the scales on that are olive drab nylon with a Federal eagle embossed on one side, and in this format by the Swiss Army in 2008, superceding the old Soldier (the Pioneer). The old German Army knife which was made by a number of manufacturers including Victorinox is a 108mm model, the civilian equivalent of which was called the Trooper, and had a much larger awl/reamer/punch which also didn't a hole in it. I think the reasoning was that soldiers in most armies will carry a small sewing kit (known in the British army as a ''housewife'').
I bought this because I like genuine issue European army equipment as well as loving Victorinox knives. Being in the UK too I can't carry it as EDC but can when I go bushcrafting as this is ''valid reason'' imo, I generally also take a fixed blade on those occasions.
This Soldier model is the reason I bought a Hiker for EDC, as it has basically the same toolset but in smaller, non-locking format.
I got my Soldier on Amazon last year for £30 which was a bargain. I'm not a collector as I use all my knives but have a few which I bought when I spotted them at a good price. Last year I got a Climber for £21 which I hadn't started carrying til recently, just in the last week I used tools on it - including the hook to re-position the chain on my mountain bike - which aren't on other models I have.

I have been super interested in this Swiss Army knife! I’m really glad that you covered it! It’s interesting the liner lock is “Lefty aligned!” I’m excited to see liner locks on a Victorinox, I know there’s not too many with locking tools.. you shouldn’t feel bad for having more than one of the same knife 😅 I do the same! This has a very useful toolset! It’s neat to see the blades serrated! I really like this! I want one! :)

My leatherman or my soldier are my EDC's and I cut myself nearly every time I get the knife out 🤣. The serrations on the end are better for biting in to and cutting rope. 🇬🇧🇩🇪👍

If you want a Vic with a partially serrated blade, a clip and one hand opening, I would get a One Hand Sentinel. The liner is right under the plastic scales. Pry off one the scales and you can cut the liner right off. The back spring isn't super strong, but it may be strong enough on its own. You'd need to shorten the blade by a bit more than a centimetre as well.

I did see those down in price on tactical knife & they sold out in no time , now I know why I missed them 🤣 just waiting on them coming back in stock. Could you use JB weld to glue the liner lock to the side ? ( PS... that was the sale price, as it was more expensive the first time I seen them on there site)
