thank you for posting this video, i now know how it's done, bloody pull start's, there a pain in the ass, every time i go to put the rope through, the spring unravels again, yep gonna get a kick start, lol
I already knew how to do this, Just wanted to be sure I had it right before I replaced mine. Thanks a ton, Very informative!
Thanks so much for the informative video. I watched a few related videos before watching yours but you helped me the most after the coil spring came out and I was having trouble winding the rope! You saved me another couple hours of cussing!!
i made a homemade tool for winding the spring. i took a bicycle seat post and cut a small notch in it. you take the spring and coil it just enough to get it in the housing. you dont have to fight it all theway in. then you put the seat post in the middle over the stud sticking up. you hook the inner part of the spring on it and start twisting it. after a little bit the spring will coil up and go right into place
@janemargeret Hey very happy to help and thanks for watching! Yeah I've heard that it's sometimes easier that way, thanks for the tip to add! Thanks again!

Excellent instructional video!!!
Just subbed buddy. I am building a hot rod mower and I have been having trouble with the pull start not returning on a 1974 Briggs 8 horse. Keep up the great work man.
your video helped me fix my kawasaki thanks man!!!!!
That's for the post !!! Great help !!
Great vid......I think everyone has had trouble with those recoil springs at one time or another.
Thank God for you and CZcams. I really mean it!
thanks, fixed mine a while back, gotta do it again, wanted to know if I could get some more use out of it
thank you man!! you saved my day!
Gonna try this tomorrow on my yard man mower. Thanks brothaman.
My spring was bigger and harder to wind. I used a board, put in a screw. attach outter hook of spring to the screw. attach center hook spring to a drill and slowly wind. The spring will wind and get tighter. Once the spring is to the size you need, slip a zip tie (cable tie) around the spring to hold it. remove the screw and you should be able to lift the spring without it unwinding. put the spring back into the housing and carefully slip off the cable tie. It took me a few tries to perfect it, but much easier than trying to do by hand.
you just saved me some money thank you!
@melanietarrant What has happened is the tab on the spring isnt in place so it just clicks. gonna have to rewind and attch the spring and put a new rope on.
Do you think by cleaning the pull rope housing it will fix it? I havent took the pully off or anything, I just took the housing off the motor and drained the water out. If not what else could be making the noise? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
These is one little trick....If you noticed, there is a U shaped notch on the rope side of the wheel,when the rope is tied on both ends from wheel to handle with no tension yet ,make sure hole and notch are lined up and pull rope while making a loop and spin wheel with rope in hand and when tight line up notch and hole again and pull handle to pull loop out.if tension is too loose repeat until proper tension. then cut rope...this. will avoid having a short pull. Just a thought .Good video.
So did the pullstart recoil work before you bolted it onto the engine......and the engine just wont turn over?
@tur3106 Probably pay top dollar for an exact replacement but I'd just try and find some the same thickness and strength at the hardware store. Thanks for watching!
great video bro very informative!!!!
Thank you ...great instruction.
Question, I have a re-winder on my snow blower and I would like to know if I can maybe just wind the rope and pull like we did in the old days on mowers. I have broken the cord and replaced it but thought it would be easer. Also can I put an electric start on it if it did not come with one??
@TheMattz23 Not sure what your talking about... so your rope snapped... what do you mean by the middle one?
I just got an 85 Yamaha YTM 200 3 wheeler. When I got it I noticed the pull rope was wet, I took the pull rope housing off the motor and mud and water ran out of it and its a bit rusty on the little nut that holds the plastic pully on, and the little lever that comes out and catches the rotor when you pull it. My problem is I drove it today and while its running the pull rope housing is making a constant grinding/rattling noise inside and its driving me nuts. What could be wrong?
Thank You for helping me !
Trying to put an Articat ZR580 recoil back together. It don't catch on the notch and the coil has a figure 8 like shape. Any thoughts?
@mikehunts2 Hey not a problem... Thanks for watching!
Thanks a ton helped me fix my recoil on my go kart!
Thanks for watching Jake, glad to help!
thanks ....,this video helped alot
Try taking out the spark plug and spraying some good penatrating oil in the cylinder....this will help free up your rings and protect against damage at start up. (Wd-40, Pb blast, even Sea foam works good.) Possible put it in gear and try to spin the rear wheels might help too.
Good video! Thanks!
Great video thanks for the help
Thanks man it worked I have a 2004 Honda Foreman 450 my first 4wheeler.👍🤓
@black93z28camaro Also pull the float and the needle valve... this allows fuel to fill the bowl and stop the fuel once the bowl is full. Make sure you have good flow thru there. If it leaks fuel when sitting that float isnt seated properly and you just bend the little tab where the needle is to allow it to close off sooner. Hope this helps... once you get in there it's really pretty easy. Let me know if you need anything!
@mike129995 Hey thanks for watching and for the tip aswell!
great video thanks man!
Great Vid.
Did the metal get weaker by heating it up for the whip? thanks
thanks for the vid helped me out alot

i broke my string on a 04 grizzly 660, any special rope to replace the stock rope with?
@206Ohara Actually I havent messed with any spring assist models, I'm sure it's very similiar but just has alittle more to it. Sorry I couldn't tell you more.
When I go home I am gonna try this on my 93 honda trx90...hope it works
@IB2COAL Glad I could help!
@sm4397 Hey glad I could help.....now get out there and ride! I really appreciate the positive comments, it makes it all worth it for me!
I have a suzuki, which the casing is deaper than that. How can i clamp the reel down after I wind it up?
will this work on a kawasaki lakota 300? or do u know?
We put the coil on and then the string, now we have to put the top back on the engine, but the screws will not line up and we can't connect it. Can you please help us. This is a 1988 John deere push mower. Thank you.
Thanks for the video but I couldn't fix the recoil on my gx 140 so I'll just have to buy a new recoil spring
good veido but my string r pully is locking up has plastic catches that stop it what do i do
@midnight1963 Hey thanks for watching man! Haha... yeah that's pretty funny!
@johnbrakingground Yeah they can be a real pain sometimes, and when you slip off the spring and it goes everywhere... oh yeah gotta love that! Glad the video helped refresh you and cut the time down, really appreciate you watching! Now get out there and Ride, take it easy man!
how do you replace a pull rope on a older 9.8 Mercury?
@scrapbookcutters Hey great job.....Glad to help!
I did what you said, but for some reason the pull start locks up and wont turn anything, I dont know if the engine is stuck or something.
@jfrost77hd I might try changing the plug just for the hell of it. It has sat for 3-4 years. I don't really know shit about carbs. I am used to working on cars with fuel injection lol. So take the carb off and clean it up? How do you go about cleaning the jets out?
This was good and helpful thanks! But after watching it once, Ithought it'd be fun to watch it again and count the 'here-there's that I heard during the clip. I counted 17 'here' comments and 18 'there' comments. This averages a here-there comment once every twelve seconds. Nice! But my cousin's got you beat!
thx bro you just saved me over 100 bucks my moto 4 is starting every pull now
Awesome, I'm glad to hear that! Thanks for watching!
Thank you doggie. Fixed my honda 3 wheelers pull start.
where can i find parts for the pull start, my unit where the plastic piece is and the metal arm is, is sticking. I tried greasing it but no help.
I havent used it in about a year, its been in a shed, i ordered a battery also to see if that works, but it worked fine before it sat.
I've done this on a Homelite Snowmobile when I was a kid. I did not have any instructions or a video to watch back then. I just winged it.
@jfrost77hd I got my pull start all fixed now and now it turns over good, but the damn thing won't run. I checked it andit is getting spark and fuel. I was even using starting fluid and it still will not run. It is a polaris 350 I beleive.
good video
@black93z28camaro Hey your welcome man... glad to help!
Hey thanks!
ok, I watched this video, applied it, but the way I tensioned up the coil was that i gripped the inner hook with a pair of vice-grips and pulled, until I got too flusterated because the thing kept getting loose and wrapped around my thumb. so i wounded it on the reel and put it inside the housing and it worked fairly good. I installed it back on my ATV, pulled, and it grabbed the flywheel the 1st time, but the other time, thing just spinned. Couldn't get the arm to work properly.
thanks dude !..
@black93z28camaro Really easy... I might have a video of it. Just take the carb off from the intake boot... flip it over, take the screws out of the bottom of the bowl, pull the bowl off... now you'll have a 2 brass fittings in there, the bigger one is you main jet for higher rpm, the smaller one is your pilot jet for idle.... carefully unscrew them ans clean out with carb cleaner and compressed air, make sure all the little holes are free of crud.
@will4918 Hey thanks for watching!
@TheHuntingbuds Hey thanks for watching!
@SirFirewill ...It might work that way... just be careful that tab where you start it doesn't come off and unwind on you....trust me it will cut you!
ok so the rope broke on my starter and when i try to retennsion it it just makes a click noise and no tension is added what do i do?
i had the problem of 2 of my bolts holding the pull cord case on broke water got in and it wouldn't retract. all i did was spray wd-40 in where the cord gos and puled it in between squats and it retracted
Many thanks helped me fix my generator
Hey thanks for watching, glad it helped!
ill give it a try an let ya know , thanks
@jaker5555 Hey thanks for watching!
@mike129995 where can I get one of those?
Yeah they are a pain... I cant tell you how many times I've gotten them soo close, then that sucker will go flying and tangle up! Just keep trying and be careful its sharp.
@1890scooter843 Hey thanks for watching!
Thats what's wrong with mine is its too tight but its only either too tight or too loose to where it won't turn to cath the piece that's supposed to catch the motor. What should I do
@takt5 Just keep winding it tight and as small as you can get it and lay it in.... it is alot easier said than done! ;)
Haha... man that took a curve ball from where I though it was going. I liked it though, funny stuff man! We'll possibly alot of $ if it's a good video! Thanks for watching!
@justanotherengine Thanks for watching!
Hey thanks for watching!
@br4nd0n136 Now what happened?
Sounds like you have more wrong than the recoil. Do you know if the engine runs or not, it might be siezed up.
Was mudding with my friend and it was overheating and i ripped on it too hard to get it started and it snapped
Hell this what I was looking for. U made me laugh too
Snake Solid Hey glad to help and thanks for watching!
