  • Every Electronic Maker Needs a Adjustable Power Supply To make electronic projects
    this video is all about how can you build your own very easy Variable power supply
    in this video i will make a lab power supply using Lm317 voltage regulator it can regulate voltage using a 5K Variable Resistance the Lm317 can regulate 1.5 to 36V at 1.5A but 1.5A is not enough for many projects when you need more power like 775 motor or High Power LEDs so i will Use TIP3055 for increasing Current upto 5A it work great but it doesn't have short circuit protection at output so if short circuit happened at output the current reach 10A and Transistor will blow up in just 5 second
    so prevent short circuit you can use This circuit

      Add a fuse or current limiter before it. If you chose the latter option, you made an variable bench power supply that won't destroy itself or the stuff connected to it if it's set correctly..

      There is no short circuit protection on output. This why I used a 0.2 ohm resistor that will limit the current when shorted the output . and 1k is a load resistor if you don't put it there the voltage will not regulate correctly it will show 2v but when you load it will turn into 1v...!

      The last resistance, is protection for Power transistor . if the output is shorted the Transistor will not blow up your Face .... Only the resistance, get hot...!

    can i use Reverse Polarity Protection Instead of using Short Circuit Protection ? i'm a bit confused of it because the voltage will be dropped, first i'm using LM7805 as the regulator with TIP3055 as the enhancement of current, and then when i use Short circuit protection in Simulation, the voltage is dropped, so what should i do ? thank you

      Not need to use any protection if you use low power input ... Like 3-5A
      But if you use high Power at input like 30V 10A then it will blow up

      No problem the voltage drop is 2V if you use shotky diode then it will be less

      @@Electronic_For_You I tried parallel 3055 X2 mounted on a 3X2 inch heatsink, connected 1K resistor on pin B, don't know if this is correct or not. and test loading at 4A for 10 seconds, causing moderate heat I don't understand how many Ampere can be loaded in 1 3055 datasheet.

      2A for each TIP3055
      ( short circuit current is 10A )
      Not need to connect 1k to pin 2 connect all as shown in pic
      If your tip3055 is fake
      Then it will reach 100°c in just minute

      @@Electronic_For_You I tried calculating the installation area of tip3055 and it takes up a lot of space if using up to 10 pieces. Can I use something instead of the 3055? Just 4-6 pieces. Maybe fit my box.

    greetings, they can be used to reduce the voltage of a 20v 2a drill battery to 12v at 1.5a. for another 12v drill. Wouldn't it overheat Much? I already tried the LM2596 dc-dc and the MP1584 and it doesn't work, it doesn't lift the drill very hardly, that's why I wrote to you while I'm still stuck in my project while I'm looking for other modules of these, if you know, let me know.       This is a linear regulator
      And not recommended for heavy load . I still recommend using buck converter its most efficient and do not heat !
      And if you are talking about drill machine. I think no regular can stand the Inrush current of drill machine!
      You can power the drill from direct 12V ..

    Why the LM317? Wouldn't the transistor alone vary the voltage just with the potentiometer between its base and emitter?

      Output resistance is 0.1 Ohm
      Its work is when output shorted it drops voltage and transistor is not loaded short.....! Its a load resistance

    Lm 317 linear voltage regulator is too stable, it doesn't work, it converts the drawn current into heat, it suffers power losses, I don't recommend it. Instead, lm2596 feedback, switched regulator with const. Modify Current Regulator. Available on my channel.

      0.1 ohm to 0.5 ohm ( 0.3-0.5 best )
      And the output last 1W 3.3K ohm

If you will to use the multimeter to measure amperage, please, show me which kind the load is (coil, resistance, etc.). but, in addition, if you give it a load without a heatsink, both, the regulator (LM317) and in the transistor, they would burn, and we have seen the smoke, product of the internal fusion of the semiconductors when exceeding the temperature vs load
