  • Lt. Jason Redman spent eight years as an enlisted U.S. Navy SEAL, and was commissioned as a SEAL Officer in 2004. He completed combat deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq. In 2007, outside of Fallujah, Iraq, Lt. Redman's Assault Team came under heavy fire and he was severely wounded.
While recovering at Bethesda Medical Center, Redman authored a bright orange sign on his door, which became a statement and symbol for wounded warriors everywhere. He is the recipient of the Bronze Star with Valor, the Purple Heart, and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, among other awards.

I am an old Vietnam Veteran. Spent 8 years in the US Army and separated when my kids came of school age because I wanted them to enjoy a stable education that I experienced in South Dakota. I joined the Police Department on a Hire the Vet program and spent 24 years as a cop. My wife and I got to the age of retirement, as I neared that age, I experienced a line of duty car accident that put me on permeant retirement. Then, within a 7 month period, I lost my Brother-in-law, 2 sisters, my partner from the Police Department, my Next door neighbor and the last in this train wreck of my life was the love of my life, my wife who stood by my side for 51 years and 3 days. To say the least, I am a bit depressed, it has been 2 years since that time, Workers Comp cut my pay in half telling me I reached retirement age, and my daughter has moved in with me to cook and clean when she has time as she works full time as well to pay off her student debts. Listening to you has given me a dose of stamina, recalling my days as a soldier, so I wanted to say Thanks man! I had been looking forward for the end that must surely come soon, I yearn for that day when I can once again be surrounded by my loved ones, I still have Mom, who is now 96 and suffering in the nursing home from her second hit from Covid, and a great grandson I have yet to hold as travel is a bit difficult now as workers comp cut my pain meds from a large dose of Fentanyl to nearly the lowest dose available, and the pain has returned to nearly the last of 5 surgeries I have gone through. I think if I can just get out and do some walking I may be able to get up and going once more.

I don't know how much (percentage wise) of donations to the wounded warrior project actually makes it to the wounded warriors, but I can tell you that I have seen them do some amazing and life-changing things for wounded veterans that I wouldn't have believed without seeing it myself. I believe the work they were doing when I went through the "wounded warrior unit" probably prevented a lot of suicides, and gave a lot of hope to young soldiers around me who otherwise would've felt pretty hopeless given their current circumstances. I had a buddy who had lost an eye and a leg, and had some other grievous injuries processing out the same time as me, and I will never forget seeing the ear to ear grin as he showed me the truck they gave him that was outfitted with cameras and buttons that allowed him to drive (mostly) normally after his injuries, and many others who were assisted similarly.
Another buddy was suffering from over 150 perforations in his brain (from explosions) which resulted in regular stays in intensive care, but when he was able to get out and about they helped him live out some of his life-long dreams... No one deserved such kindness and gratitude more than he did. It restored my own faith a bit just seeing people care for my wounded buddies like that. Each of these things might seem small by themselves, but it's huge when you couldn't have done it without their help, and it gives you the confidence to say, "Yeah, so I lost an eye, a leg, etc, but that's not gonna stop me... I can still have a good life. It'll just take a little more effort, and I'm good at that!"

I'm a 26 year old "man" who has let his past troubles overcome him. This video is what I needed to wake up and a thousand thank you(s) is not enough.
I grew up in violence and drugs, not the military. I've seen people get shot and got shot myself with my best friend. The bullet went through my leg and hit him in the chest. I didn't know I was hit until hours later when the adrenaline subsided.
He is a Cuban man who turned pale white from the internal bleeding in minutes. The bullet was a .380 hollow point fired from about 8 foot away. The forensics said the bullet probably didn't even reach it's full velocity due to how close we were. An seeing as how the bullet is about a quarter of an inch from his spine, I thank God.
This all happened 7 years ago and I still think about it everyday and get scared as lame as it sounds.
I remember turning him around and seeing that the bullet didn't exit, so I carried him to the front yard and told him to sing the ABCs and made Bs chit chat till the paramedics arrived.
He went to the hospital and 9 surgeries later we went through the physical rehabilitation. Now he is addicted to drugs and looking at prison time and I'm just a pitiful loser amounting to nothing.
It messes me up everyday and I now haven't worked a consistent job in years because I have made myself the victim, always feeling sorry for myself.
This man just showed me to adapt the overcome mindset. No longer will I feel sorry for myself and I'll be damned if I let someone else feel sorry for me. Just know if you ever see this, you have inspired me in 30 minutes more than counselors and therapists in 7 years. Dude took 8 to the body and told the other dude get ready to meet Allah. I always hang out with vets because they are the only people who get it and don't expect nothing from you other than be the best you can be. Most people don't understand how a dropping of a baking pan in a Wendy's puts you right back in the midst of that day.
No homo, but I love you man and any one else going through it. It's time for us as humans to start helping each other instead of hurting each other. If someone needs a someone to vent to, just message me. Their is only one race on this planet: the human race. Pain knows no boundaries.

He walked into Navy recruit office and was told he could NOT join Navy until he lost 110 pounds. He lost 110 pounds in 3 months. Joined the Navy and changed his life. Good for him.

Why do you think we’ve had war after war after war after war? Every war, they say: “This is the end. This is the last war.” In World War I, they said: “This is the war to end all wars.” And then, not long after that, was World War II. And then soon the United States was waging war in Korea, and then Vietnam. If you study history, what you learn is that wars are always accompanied by lies. Wars are always accompanied by deception.

@Hidden Aspects Is this a serious question is my first response? Maybe you think the world is this nice place where everyone loves each other and cares about their neighbors and would never dream of invading another country or enslaving its people. Those of us that have been to school and read books understand that this is the real history of our world. Conquest, murder, rape, etc have only been stopped because of military power. The reason we can sleep soundly in the US and not have to worry about some foreign power invading or bombing us is because of our military. This is also the reason war lords and their gangs of thugs don't go around killing everyone, raping women and children, stealing, etc like they have done for years in Africa. This doesn't happen here because these people would be killed before they ever made it here by our military. This is how so and I am just surprised this is something you are unaware of, I mean it is pretty freaking obvious!

@@kcailly1 I don’t know if your lbrain can comprehend this, but I will give it a shot. 96% of the weapons in Africa came from Russia and China. IE: the “AK47”. I have no idea what you are babbling on about the US conquering but this isn’t what we were even talking about. We were talking about why people in the US can feel free and not have to worry about that happening to us. In fact, you even helped make my point for me. But, to comment on your delusions about the US ok, there has been no force for good on planet Earth that has done more for the people of planet Earth than the US. We are the most giving country on Earth and get almost nothing in return. If we were really what you describe we would have just conquered the world. We literally have the capability to destroy countries with the push of a button. We actually do everything possible to avoid civilian deaths in war and have helped more refugees than any other country. If the US is such a horrible place than why are people literally risking their lives to come here? Because we have the most tolerant society out there. Are we perfect? No of course not but to have you claim that we are not the best country is laughable. I have been to many other countries, have you? You can clearly see this man was gravely wounded in and around the face. There's obviously some nerve damage but remarkably the face has been restored to almost its former state. Jason, Sir, I am a Canadian who is very proud of my country’s fight on the side of freedom going back to WW1. I have never been more moved by a veteran’s statement than yours. My Grandfather was a veteran of WW2. He was born blind in one eye and had one of his brothers take his medical so that he could enlist in the 48th Highlanders in 1939. I have some of his medals and parts of his uniforms from that period. As like most veterans from that period, he never spoke of what he went through nor the effects on him and his family. Thankfully, you have taken things a step further in your ability to describe your mission and deal with the outcome. I am just so impressed and jealous of your candour and honesty. I wish I knew of a way to REALLY help our veterans. THANK YOU for your incredible service. THANK YOU for bringing to the fore that once you come home, the fight is not always over. You are truly a person who sets out to make the world a better place and puts his life on the line to try and make that happen. When I watch this interview, I am both awed by your contribution and at the same time wistfully embarrassed by my lack of the same. I am 61 years old. I am in between everything where I could have made a contribution on the battlefield. I would appreciate it if you could direct me to how best I can help our veterans.

Incredible story from an incredible individual!
I volunteered at the VFW post here where I live in Milton Florida for about 10 years and as a charter member of the Men's Auxiliary to the VFW I've met several combat vets that shared a few uplifting stories they brought home with them. I also spoke with a few combat vets that were "broken" and at times it felt so disheartening knowing that there was nothing or very little I could do to help. That being said, I just wanted to say thank you not only for your service (of course) but for taking the time to sit down and share your stories with us.
    Just amazing!
Thank God for you and all others that have spent even a short minute of their lives keeping things in order so we can have at least a moment of peace here at home.
