  • I'm backing to 2014,almost a decade ago, when we were working under Shell Time Charter, delivering clean petrolleum products from Rotterdam to Quebec and Montreal. In winter time it was a tough task. Strong gales and icy waters were our companion by that time. Here is the story of one of those voyages. Apologise for video quality as it was made on 2014.

    Glad to see you back, Cap! Quite an adventure you had in this video. You can almost feel the wind. I read that winter conditions are especially difficult for a ship and its crew. Watching that storm, I realized something: I was lucky in a way I didn't appreciate back when I was in the Navy. My bunk was close to the center line, and midship. Keep 'em coming!

    When I wrote my first comment, I had caught you a minute or so after you came 'on live' and I didn't watch much as I had things to do. This morning I watched the whole video and realized what a 'masterpiece' it is of what a voyage can be like. I've experienced it all except the ice, well over a half century ago, but never expected to see it again except in my memory and a few slides. You've really captured some great footage, it deserves 100s of thousands of views, I hope the algorithm swings your way some day. Until next time, best of wishes.

      Thank you very much for comment! I found some videos dated 2014 in my old mobile phone, also asked my former Chief Officer to check if he had any video materials from that voyage, so he also transferred me some videos. You may note different videos quality. It was a good adventure, however I lost a lot of my nerves than😉😁 Anyway, now it’s pleasure to remember. All the best to you!

    These videos are so incredibly stunning. I hope you are able to continue to find these lost treasures and display them for all to witness our smallness, magnified by the expanse and power of our world. So few know the fear/exhilaration of these moments you have lived. I can experience the visual with you, but never the FEELING and totality of all the senses in these moments.     Looks like a great adventure. I would be happy to sit quietly watching the majestic sight hour after hour. I watched the sea all day as a boy and wrote a story about being the captain of an oil tanker at 7 years old 1978 after being detained in a mass arrest on the school yard. I will volunteer free on your oil tanker cleaning the windows keeping everything spotless on the bridge and bringing tea and coffee, and learning the language. I hope we will get big waves like this.

    I'm watching this with my four sons ( 23-28 years old) who all like doing dangerous things. But we all agreed that the Captain of this ship must have balls of steel, literaly.

      Thank you evry much for comment! However,frankly speaking, there is no so much stress when we are onboard of modern Ice Class tanker with strong hull and powerful engine. Another story when we are on board of wooden sailing ship under the similar conditions. Then we definately need the balls)) Best wishes!

      @@simplesimon182Sure that's true but they put their trust in the guy where the buck stops and that's a heavy responsibility. I was commenting from my point of view, as a father of four adult sons and recently retired from a senior manageral role. That's why I say he's....cheers for the comment.

      @dufushead , yes life can be tough as I used to be a tankerman myself back in the day when trips were six months plus and long times between ports sometimes never even got ashore plus two ships sank. But I wouldn't have changed it for anything.

    Very nice document ! Thanks for reminding us the risks of your duty, and for go across your deck to film the ice being broken by the ship. I know you had your gloves on, but it made me think of when I put mines off to film the ice pack by the Saint-Lawrence not long ago and couldn't feel some fingers for two months after that, so I have an inkling of what serving on such a line could mean ! 👏👍

    Many years ago, I covered this route in November on a 15,000 DWT ship during a hurricane with a load of sheets and other steel products. We were storming, so we were blown off course by over 100 miles to the southat tilts of over 30 degrees. There was a lot of damage on board and in the holds, but it ended safely in the port of Quebec and Montreal, still without ice. Greetings to the crew.

    I have to say that I view many of these videos with a quiet smile.. My first career was as a professional yacht skipper, almost ten years, primarily carrying out delivery work of all types yachts, both sail and motor yachts world-wide before transferring to the multi-million pound toys found in the world's more exotic locations where a civilized existance could be found. The seas depicted here are without doubt horrendous and certainly dangerous to any poorley constructed, maintained or handled ship.. But as for the experience, I can tell you that a 35ft or 40ft sailing yacht or motor yacht making way to windward in even a simple force six would be 50 times worse for the crew than what we see here. Standing on the bridge of a ship, dressed in everyday average clothing with a mug of coffee.. that bears No resemblance to the experience of being in the cockpit of a small yacht.. sometimes for many days and nights with no warm food, cold, sometimes freezing, sodden wet clothing, no adequate sleep and extreme fatigue.. equipment failing or breaking.. No, give me that comfort of a ship's wheelhouse and a dry warm berth waiting for me at the end of my watch :>)

    I have to say, this looks very, very terrifying! I always think of the ship that split in half while going through some really rough seas. Did you happen to see this video?

      Thank you very much for your feedback! I `m not sure which video you mentioned, the latest I saw was the small bulk carier cracked in the middle of her hull during heavy swell at Black Sea

    So much for global warming or climate change, or whatever they are pushing out via the narrative these days.
    I give all these guys credit, doing what they do. The oceans are unforgiving, vast, and dangerous.

    I'm surprised it was worthwhile to bring petroleum products to Canada from western Europe, even in 2014. Somebody thought it was a good idea,

      I`ll give you three guesses whom idea it was. We loaded the products at Shell Terminal Rotterdam and discharged at Shell Terminal Montreal)

      @@S.Kostan_1970 Certainly Shell has refineries on the east coast of North America. Maybe Shell is just selling more gas than it can refine. Anyway, nice video, thank you for responding to my comment.
