The Bear was a legend, but Saban has done more in a much tougher time period of college football. The Bear laid the foundation but Saban built the dynasty

Wow! They said “they will have to carry him off”. How right they were. He passed over just 28 days after his last game.

Great coach, an even better man, and this comes from a Tennessee fan.
But, it's sad to see that even Bear Bryant lived in denial upon arriving at the moment that the game had finally passed him by.
    He was human after all.

Bama fan here. I was around during this time.
The game hadn't passed him by. Just two months before this interview, Bama was 5-0, ranked second, and had beaten eventual champion Penn State 42-21. Like Keith Jackson says in the interview, Bama was favored to win its 3rd national championship in 4 years. The game definitely hadn't passed him by.
But due to his declining health, recruiting had fallen off a cliff the previous year or two. As he said in the interview, we had the starters to win another national championship (see the Penn State game for evidence), but the team wasn't deep. Injuries took their toll, and for Alabama fans, the unthinkable end-of-season collapse happened. Followed by Bear Bryant's retirement and death shortly after his final game.
It's a huge mistake to think the game had passed him by. But it's very nice of you as a Tennessee fan to compliment the Bear as a coach and a person.

I don't think the game had passed him by, I think his age/health was catching up.

Bear was/is the GOAT. Coach Bryant coached and recruited 2-3 star players at most. He had very few 4-5 star players and still won. I love Coach Saban but didn’t like the way Nick went out. Of course I’m guessing they both may have paid players. But Saban would never have won with the same players that Coach Bryant had. Yes different era. But Bryant still the GOAT
