  • Welcome to my video on the history of Houston's train stations. This will include Union Station and its conversion to Minutemade Field, the now demolished Grand Central Station of the Southern Pacific, and the MKT Station.

Thanks for the great vid. Didn't know about Houston's other stations. As a kid, I rode the Sam Houston Zephyr from Houston Union Station in 1966 to Dallas-Fort Worth, connected with the Texas Zephyr to Denver, then the California Zephyr to Salt Lake. Also rode the Texas Chief in 1967 to Chicago, and a few times after that before Amtrak. My Dad preferred trains over planes for his business trips. I loved going with he and my Mom over the summer breaks. They'd get a drawing room. In the '60s the Texas Chief had a nice diner and lounge car...still retained the vestiges of its former streamliner glory. Although I live in Europe now I still travel to Houston every year to see family. Fond memories of a fun childhood in Houston. Will always remember Houston Union Station.

You make spot on points regarding how the city terminals create economies. Chicago's Union Station used to have real restaurants, not just diabetes dispensaries and vending machines. I understand that even Englewood Union Station had a Fred Harvey lunch counter way back when. I look forward to your features on urbanism, etc. Thanks, TH.

Fun fact: if you know how the Astros ballpark and the Union Station connects, you can find a very private restroom. Old relic of the old days.

Last time I was there was in 2005 so by now, someone else figured it out.

Hey Train Hopper.. enjoy your videos.. subscriber..and yeah..68 year old life long Texan and you're spot on with the identity crisis analysis..the thing is..if you've ever driven from Vidor..on the state line with Louisiana..to El Paso in one day..yeah..I know..it's like 15 hours.. and Texas is accurately ALL of those geographic designations.. southeast..then Midwest..then southwest..so I laugh when fellow Texans refer to the state as simply the southwest or worse yet..west.. it's several different ecosystems and diverse geographic regions that stretch definitively from southeast to Midwest to southwest..so how the hell anyone can refer to Texas accurately as southwestern United States has obviously never driven from one side to the other..yeah..I know..I'm an idiot for doing that but I was young and single and had a 65 Dodge van and gas money and whereas I've certainly driven almost every road in this state over a lifetime of hiking and camping, nothing gives you the perspective that driving from one side to the other in one day will..so yeah .. Texas is SE.. I mean Midwest..no..I mean SW..no.. nevermind!

A gentle correction - It was the Houston, Belt and Terminal Railway... Great to find some historical information for the Houston area. Seems no one took notes through the years!?

Picture in later years, platforms parking and NRHS cars on the spot. Like KCS GOOD CHEER car there on the spot. It died when the mail and package went to truck.,

If people really wanna railfan drive through port of Houston. Between the yards and port you’ll have enough footage for several hour videos

THE SUNSET LIMITED STILL RUNS! it's a little train, that no way reflects the demand for rail With 7 days of demand and expenses. It has only 3 days of ridership and revenue. Houston has a little cinder box of a station today. But it's is a oil Capitol so .......

Destruction of stuff to build highways crazy and stupid you say. The Katy freeway is heavily used, the railroad was not, so what would do instead to move goods and people in mass quantities?

Yet all the widened highways are still parking lots at rush hour. Building more highways is a massive waste of money and only contributes to Houston’s massive traffic problem. I would love to see this city invest in more passenger rail systems. It would ease congestion massively.
      Sincerely,
      A Native Houstonian.
