- For those celebrating St Patrick's Day, from a CBC Vancouver TV special by popular request, John Gary sang "Danny Boy."
John Gary was a singer, recording artist, Broadway performer and television host of a summer replacement series for "The Danny Kaye Show." Gary started singing at the age of 5, and at 9 he won a 3-year scholarship to the prestigious Cathedral School of St John in Manhattan. He was considered one of the most talented of popular singers due to his extraordinary breath control and the tonal quality of his voice with an exceptionally wide range of three and 1/2 octaves. Nominated for a 1964 Grammy Award for Best New Artist, he recorded 24 albums for RCA and was a favourite singer of Elvis Presley.
The words for "Danny Boy" were written by English lawyer/author/lyricist Edward Weatherly in 1910 in Bath, Somerset, and set to the ancient Irish tune "Londonderry Air" in 1913. Among 3,000 other songs, Weatherly also wrote the words to the religious "The Holy City (Jerusalem, Jerusalem)", and the popular World War 1 song "Roses of Picardy." Bit of trivia: Victorian ballad :The Holy City" was sung by Jeanette MacDonald in the 1936 film :San Francisco" and mentioned in James Joyce’s "Ulysses" published 1918-1920. - Zábava

Saw him at a live concert and bought all his recordings in the 1960s. One of the best balladeers of all time. His great voice and songs will live forever. RIP

Saw John in concert in 1968 in San Antonio where he wowed the crowd with his Spanish. He was the primo tenor of the 20th century . I chanced to visit with him in 1975 in Dayton and found him to be an awesome individual. He was adept at many things besides singing, he was an accomplished archer, a scuba expert, a bowler played guitar and probably more things than I know of. He was adored by the ladies for his voice and looks and revered by men for his voice and physical ability. I'll never forget him and his beautiful music.

My father played his albums when I was a young teenager and I love his music still, I think partly because I associate it with my father but mostly because he has the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard. I also had the privilege of seeing him in person before he died.
Saw John Gary perform in Chicago’s Empire Room of The Palmer House in 1964. Post HS Prom; I acquired several of his albums. His voice wears well.

Saw him in person at a club, close up, intimate setting. His voice…so beautiful, so warm, his range fantastic, his breath control amazing. Also a genuine, nice person. I have all his CDs, everyone who hears them asks me, who is that? What a beautiful voice!
His voice is pure and true, with a warmth that’s unsurpassed, no auto tune for this man.
I grew up listening to John Gary. My mother loved him and played his music all the time. How blessed I am to have been acquainted with one of the greatest voices of all time. My parents saw him live in Houston in the 60s. His version of Unchained Melody remains the standard to measure every other one by.
THE ONE & ONLY JOHN GARY was simply a great guy---a child singing star---a US MARINE---a star of Records/TV/Radio--He took his final bow more than 20 years ago---but he is still remembered. He would have liked that!
John Gary possessed an extraordinary voice. As a long time member of his fan club, what a joy it was to become friends with John and Lee.

I loved a Irish Outlaw "Boy" His Dad "Pops " was one of those really tough Irish "Boys"He go to a bar and keep playing this beautiful song over and over dedicating it to Danny Boy his son .He'd tell anyone "Don't touch the jukebox or I'll knock you out " He wasn't very big in size but he was mighty .This beautiful song touches my heart so .❤
I have been a true fan of John for many decades. Each time I come across a" new" audio or video link I am compelled to listen . Truly an artist - a vocal artist with no peer.

What an underated performer...Beautuful version
I have heard many great vocalists do this number, but John Gary did it in a way that moves me the most. I particularly like the version he did on his "So Tenderly" album which is the one to which I refer. All of his special abilities and gifts were on display including his legendary use of grace notes and other embellishments, an incomparable falsetto and his rich baritone mid-range was exquisitely utilized on the lowest notes of the song for example, during the first phrase. When he sings "and all my grave will warmer, sweeter be", he produces a tone on the word "grave" that is simply spectacular (it is less apparent in the version here) and which has a gut-wrenching sadness and ominous quality I have not heard from anyone else who did this song. It fits perfectly with what the text conveys at that point. He sings softly when it is appropriate but manages to sing gradually, more loudly (crescendo) as the melodic line rises, which serves to imbue the phrases with growing emotion. I have heard some vocalists sing the entire song in piano/pianissimo or worse yet, in forte without any change in dynamics, neither of which is effective. In the version from the "So Tenderly" album he modulates up 1/2 step which adds a great deal to the effect being created. This allows him to reach an F# on the word "bend" which he does in gorgeous falsetto, where during the first verse he does the comparable note (F) in head voice rather than falsetto. So much more can be said but John Gary was an incredible artist. His creativity through use of his voice was simply incomparable.

Unappreciated superstar from the past.
He was a favourite of my mother's. I remember hearing his "That's the Way it Was" album playing on our stereo in the 1970s. With my mother in an Alzheimer's care home at age 93, I've found his music coming back into my consciousness. It's like opening an old box stored in the attic. Now I've become a fan, too.

My Mom loved John Gary-grew up listening to him. At 91 she is also in a memory care unit and listening to this takes me back to healthier and happy times.
New research is showing memory issues can be helped by listening and perhaps singing along a bit to favorite music from the person's younger days...sorry to hear your mum died. ...Blessed 🐝 to all suffering and in pain and to Mother Earth...

I just discovered John Gary through a recording someone gave me. Besides his wonderful voice and range, his singing is so expressive, genuine, and from the heart without being sentimentalized. Being a musician, I have heard many singers, especially in the classical genre. I find John Gary to be a real gift.
When younger (in the 60's-70's) I had a tenor voice in the same range as John's. I studied all the songs he sang that I could hear. It was great fun trying (and failing) to feel I was in his ballpark. Since then hearing many great tenors, because technology has made their voices available to us, I feel John is the best for his type of voice/music as is the great Pavarotti is to his. Both, simply the best ever...

I had never heard of John Gary until my sister married him. He was a great performer. I especially liked his Irish tenor songs.
