Do Multi-Disc Games Work on FreePSXBoot & tonyhax?

- Recent awesome developments in the PS1 homebrew community have come in the form of tonyhax and FreePSXBoot. Both of these allow users to easily play imports and backups on compatible consoles without the need for any physical installs or modifications. I've covered both of these developments in several videos but I've been asked this question countless times: What about multi-disc games? In this video I perform a test using FreePSXBoot as well as both methods of tonyhax to show you all whether or not multi-disc game swapping works.
This video has been made with Fair Use in mind and has been created as an educational piece of media.

This is great to know man! If this is the case, The Legend of Dragoon should work fine as well. The thing about that game I believe I remember is it would actually juggle you like from disk 2 to disk 3 and then needing to go back to a previous region, make you insert disk 2 again back and forth... Thanks man. Going to be trying it.
You're welcome!
Yep, certain areas are on all discs, but if the devs didn't think that you would really go back to a place a lot it would only be on maybe one or two of them instead forcing you to swap the disc
I remembered if you swap random FFVII disks with the lid sensor pushed in you can play the game the same. The cut scenes/FMV will play from the other disks, for example if you have disk 3 in while playing the loaded disk 2 it will play the que for the movie from disk 3. I had a scratched disk. Did this to play through the game.
Sounds like a great reason to have a backup!
Thanks, I got stuck on a part of FFVII disk 2 because I was stuck on a white screen. Thought I was going to have buy a new disk or buy a freepsxboot memory card.
Thanks for doing this so I didn't have to burn the 3 CD-R's for FF7 to try it myself
Beautiful! seems the exploit unlock the CD drive and keep it like that until you reboot or power off, would be more beautiful if some exploit like PS2 that flash the drive permanent, would be fantastic to see another console like the mighty Dreamcast.
Very nice thank god it works fine.
tonyhax or freepsxboot wont work on my scph-101. gets stuck on starting game or just black screen. pls help
Does 4.87 HFW (HEN) work on ps3 super slim? I'm worrying about bricking the ps3. Edit: did it yesterday :D but will wait next week for 4.88 :/
I’m curious how it does for Monster Rancher. That game you create monsters by swapping discs to something that isn’t the game but then you put back the game. You can make monsters from audio CDs so I’m really curious how the system handles things in this case.
Since these exploits put the drive in a mode that disables all checks, that will also work. Audio CDs don't even HAVE region checking.
I'm inclined to ask about Colony Wars on the ps1, since that was a two disc game, and if I recall correctly, it doesn't have the save prompt before requiring the disc swap.
Haven't tried it myself, although the results seem positive.
It should work. As far as I am aware the NoCash unlock stays in place until the console is restarted, it even survives opening the disc tray.
Game shark works too 👍🏻😂 used a back up of game shark to game shark a back up.
Legendary
Is there a memory card that can hold a microSD card so games can boot directly from the card? Similar to the GameCube hack? Love the videos btw, always impressed!
Not for the PS1, and I doubt there ever will be due to how slow those ports would be on the PS1.
It makes sense as the Drive Unlock gets applied during TonyHax / FreePSXBoot and presumably the Drive doesn't get "Reset" when you change discs?
More thinking running the exploit patches the console's checks for the remainder of time the console is on.
@@MrMario2011 So you couldn't, say, boot a legit disc one of Metal Gear Solid then when it asks for disc 2 give it a burnt copy without tricking the system into booting a burnt copy in the first place? Because, at least from where I'm sitting, it looks more like the system just stopped requesting any anti-piracy past the initial boot.
Great video but I do have 1 important question! Does Tonyhax or Unirom support games that are Patched with fan translations and whatnot?
Absolutely!
@@MrMario2011 wow then that's awesome! Alright that's all I wanted to know cause I plan on trying out Megaman X4 Undub and 8 and I wanted to make sure fan translated games work
sadly need for speed 4 doesnt work on freepsxboot the game stucks in loading !
It should have been obvious for anyone that took the time to read about the hack would understand it unlocks the drive therefor the drive remains unlocked until the next power cycle meaning swapping discs will be possible as drive is currently unlocked
Plenty of people asking a pretty valid question.
@@MrMario2011 yeah a valid question no the less I would agree
I hope one day they figure out how to softmod Japanese ps one with memory card.🃏
As I understand it: The hidden unlock command these use for booting discs is not present in the Japanese BIOS, which is why this won't work the same way on Japanese consoles.
@@MrMario2011 i have questions off topic,if possible if could explain one day about the new snes rooms patches SA-1 Root?.🃏
Is there a way to install FreePSXBoot without a PS2?
You can flash Gamesharks from a PS1 so I don't think it's impossible.
Sure, several ways to do it, but PS2 is probably most accessible for most viewers.
right now I think the other methods are:
1) a ps3 memory card adapter (expensive)
2) DexDrive for Ps1 (what I did it cost like $15 plus shipping and I had to get a serial to usb cord too, look on youtube how to use it)
3) Do the swap trick to boot into unirom using a boot disc and then flash a memory card with your ps1 (I could never get the swap trick to work)
Those seem to be the least technical methods. There's more on FreePsxBoot's github though.

Speaking of save games, can I use saves of PAL and NTSC games on the same memory card? I know that the GameCube memory cards have issues with that. Although that's only because of the Japanese characters, I believe.
Yes, you can.
Yeah you can, and you are right, the gamecube memory card filesystem is different depending on which region the console and game is for due to Japanese chars
Okay thanks, good to know.
The PS1 filesystem has no such issues. You can even use a Pocketstation to save PAL games. (FFVIII is even compatible with it internationally!)
Now I'm confused as to which one I should use. Is one better than the other?
they all worked, it probably doesn't matter
I personally prefer tonyhax with FreePSXBoot.
would this work with the bemani append discs?
can confirm, they work with append discs
Have you tested PSX multi-disc games with Mechapwn?
That would work just fine.
And multigames disk? Meido Menu 1.2 works?
Haven't tried it, although I'm sure they'll work since single-disc games work fine.
As long as the drive doesn't get reset at any point anything should work just fine
@@MrMario2011 the menu starts but the games don't start, a real shame.
can you play iso with this hack
I'd assume it just never had any security enabled on swaping multi disc games xD
i dont see why it would considering the Ps1's security checks are done at boot so once it passes that 1st check i dont see why it would have another check
@@SynShenron i think the check actually happens every time you open the lid. The reason I think this Is because some gamesharks for the ps1 can allow you to play backups. The later ones that you can play backups with let you swap the disc with the lid button held down (with tape or a spring) and just pressing X when the right disc is inserted. The older ones you would have to disengage the lid button to be able to swap the discs and backups would not work. I have the older gameshark so It's great that this exploit is available.
with tonyhax beatmania (japanese version) won’t read disc 2
damnit thank you for commenting. was about to go and buy a ps1 just to play beatmania CS/
Tl;dr Yes
What about Metal Gear Solid?
I don't see why it wouldn't.
For those who just want to know the answer: YES
Thank u ..🤭
Try metal gear solid
This is actually big deal & the reason I invested in an RGB cable & took time to fix my disc tray. I wonder how different this is when using the slot 2 version of tonyhacks (no need to remove the memory card)
Mr mario i love ur video
Can u comment this!!!
Appreciate ya, here's your comment!
@@MrMario2011 thx dude u make me happy
