Addressing the people who said the side mounts are "TOO HIGH" 😬

- We've added a side mount on the passenger front fender to give the car more style and class except 90% of our audience felt like the spare tire was too high... this is Bad Chad's response to the controversy.... then he's going to try to duplicate the driver side 😬

As a long time car builder- I must say I'm very proud of you for taking the advise of one or more of your followers. "WELL DONE"
He is no longer bad chad but now rad chad lol
HUGE amount of respect for anyone who admits when they were wrong, especially on social media! You are a stand-up guy @badchad ! LOVE everything about this car! NICE WORK!
I don't think Chad was wrong, everyone has their own taste of design and how something looks, I also thought the tire was sitting a little to high but it's not my build, it's Chads and he can do whatever he likes. I did think it was cool that he took an opinion from some of people and changed it, this shows he is a man that cares and lets us share an opinion and have the sense of involvement in the build, super cool of Chad to do that, much respect.
Jolene is quite a professional at what she's doing. She's truly engaged with what's going on. Makes things flow well.
Allows Chad to keep things moving without stopping.
Chad nailed the factory look of the side mounts. Just google 1936 Hudson, and click images . That being said, I agree that it might not look so overbearing if they were about 3” lower. What a pleasure to watch this man’s mind work, and apply it to metal.
Being the suspension has been lowered ,, if the sidemount went down more it would interfere with the front wheel travel
It did look better without the side mounts ,much cleaner look.but if you are keeping them I agree they need to be lower as not to dominate the side of the car 👍🏻
How fantastic was it yesterday to watch the lovely couple come to your workshop and make the glass templates, this is what helps makes your show the best .We really enjoyed it .Very glad to see he's feeling better and back on the job. AWSOME ! Dave. 😎
Once again you prove yourself a true gentleman and one who doesn't mind accepting advice. Truly awesome Chad and Jolene
One of the reasons I love watching Chad create art with these old cars that people just let rot away, he reminds me of my favorite movie, The Christmas story and Ralphies dad and his tires that are just like the old baldass tires Chad is using. Bringing me so much joy. Thank you Chad for building awesome cars and showing me how to weld and Jolene I need to thank you even more because without you, we would not be learning from a true artist.
“ But I didn’t say fudge!”
Thank you for not getting mad at us. It looks awesome now. Blessings to you both.
Now they look MAGNIFICENT. Well done Chad.
Great move Chad....looks 100% better!
Don’t forget to drill a hole for water to drain out the bottom. Would look good with peep mirrors 😊
Your side mounts look much better now! You could get some more of those trailer fenders you used for your buckets, and make some covers for the exposed part of the side mounts. That is what side mounts would have had in the '30s. They are hinged at the front, and with a latch down at the back. They look good, protect the tires from UV damage and keep them securely in place. They also make a good place to mount side-view mirrors! Painted body color and with a strip of Bad Chad chrome trim around the center, they would look really nice. You're going to have the world's best-looking 1936 Terraplane!
Huge wheel looks ridiculous
HUGE DIFFERENCE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you, fine sir! Maybe that doesn't seem like much to some people, but it honestly changes the entire thing from.... "Look at the side mounts I put on the car I did".... to instead.... " Hey, check out these insanely done side mounts to the T quality and fitment."
cheeseburger meal to steak dinner difference!!! Well done!
It takes a secure and intelligent man to acknowledge and act upon input being offered by observers. This is one of the many reasons that makes Bad Chad such a great CZcams channel. ❤
Chad, what can I say, I have not met enough men in this world that I can say I respect as much as YOU! You don't give yourself enough credit. You are truly a "Gentleman". I feel honored to be able to be a part of your work experience. Thank you for just being you. It's no wonder Jolene loves you! You are a good man. Thanks Chad!
Looks good! Should you add a drain port for it?
In my opinion, this is a matter of personal taste. If Chad and Jolene like them, that’s all that matters. As Chad has said numerous times, “Do what makes you happy.”
100% - Their canvas, let the painter paint 🙂
Hi Chad!! Well done awesome job!!! I am busy restoring a '37 Terraplane, with dual side-mounts,and the 'bubble'shape trunk! We currently have two of these amazing cars in the shop, both have dual sidemounts! Great vids from Jolene, please say hi! Kind regards, Murray from South Africa!!
I love the chance he takes to do what is in his mind and what he knows he can do to make it happen and just goes for it. That's the greatest thing about this . Improvise and minimized 😂
The camera shot from in front of the grille looking back makes this car look so bad ass with the lower profile windshield after the top chop. I love that grille and the red hood ornament. The bumper/fog lights stick out quite a ways - maybe cut the brackets and pull them in a little to tighten up the look? Did chrome trim rings for the headlights come with the car? You guys are my absolute favorite channel of all the car shows!
Oh boy, I'm one of them and we are going to hear it today, I will be hiding behind my couch... 😶🌫😉 Edit. Looks better now and I can get back in the couch instead of behind it (You fooled me Jolene! 😜)! 😃
Man you were told off aye lol...
But I think it looks much better you do good work brother and your wife to be does a great job with the camera 📸👍
On the bottom rear of the passenger front fender, there are some scratches that look like three character lines that follow the angle of the wheel arch. That is the top line is a little more forward than the second, and the second a little more forward than the bottom line. I thought they were character lines, but when I realized they were not, I thought some very small half round stock could be welded on to make three character lines. Then I thought if that were done, the same on the lower rear part of the fender skirt would look good, in my mind. Thoughts?
I saw those comments coming through, and wondered if it would cause a stir, with so much commentary from "The Peanut Gallery". The fact that you re-visited the decision is 100% consistent with my Hot Rod/Customizing credo "Work it 'til you like it". I've re-done plenty of metalwork; that's the thing I like about working in metal (as opposed to wood) is you can re-work it as much as you need to without it showing in the end. Nice job, Chad! Mad respect.
That looks awesome, now if we could just talk you into painting it one solid colour it would look super.
Sidemounts got higher in the mid-'30s as bodies became more streamlined and the amount of physical space available to stow them at a lower altitude diminished. Sidemounts had become a "thing" in 1928, and over the succeeding few years were fitted to up to 50% of some brands of cars. But by 1938 the craze was well over, and installations had declined to only 4%; some manufacturers refused to offer them at all. The decline was helped by the fact that by '38 virtually all US cars had built-in trunks, so external stowage of a spare wheel(s) seemed less necessary. After '37 some makers offered sidemounts only as options -- typically on their largest and traditionally-styled models, like Packard seniors and Cadillac's formal sedans and limos. By 1941 the sidemount installation rate was down to something like 1%. This was just as well, since in rubber-starved wartime the last thing you wanted to do was display your spare tires within easy reach of the public. Sidemounts disappeared with the advent of full-envelope bodies after WWII, there being literally no space (fender valley) remaining within which to fit a full-sized spare. In the meantime, "high pockets" sidemounts like these -- Hupmobile, Buick, and a few others had them, too -- look ridiculous, and ruin the flowing lines of the car.
Chad
I like it much better now you dropped the wheel that little bit more.
It looks like it was meant to be.
You do it how you like as it's your car your vision your art.
I watch to learn some tips from you.
One tip from me- get a Dressmaker's / Tailor's tape for measuring around profiles- your masking tape trick works well for distance but after 2 - 3 rolls of tape it gets exy$$$$ a dress makers tape cost about CAD$1.00 and you will then also have measurement as well.
Love your show and as always Jolene's camerawork is spot on.
Wasn't sure about the side mounts at first. Might hide the clean, aerodynamic, chopped design. But then I remembered the mad deco thing anyone seeing it in the rear view mirror will see. Extra WTF confusion wins. Now I'm convinced they are cool, but thinking the spares need the same spin formed caps as the front wheels. Now that the rears dont need them and it's a shame to hide half of them. Just in case anyone sees it from the side. It'll look like a viking ship. Epic. Hope they fit the fender buckets without any more chopping just to test out the look. I'd love to see that.
Also... a tip I learned from an upholsterer- A piece of thin transparent painter's plastic dropcloth works great for making a template of a complex shape like the fender top. the plastic is pliable enough to conform to the shape of the fender, body, whatever, and can just be flipped-over for the other side. I recently used it when making new sail panels for the '49 Chevy coupe I chopped.
I was one who thought the side mount was too high. I'm glad you received a photo for comparison. Now, what you have done is perfect. It blends much better and does not over power the peak of the hood and, like you mentioned, it now lengthens the appearance of the fender. It's just enough lower. Good on you for listening to your followers. I still don't like the skirts, but I'll get over it. Keep on keep'n on.
Great job Chad. Must tell you that back in the early 60s I had Straight eight Hudson limo here in England that had dual sidemounts. It also had colour matching steel covers over the tyre with a chrome strip down the centres. Can’t remember the year of the car but it looks a bit like the one you are working on. It also had an electric gear shift on the steering column as well as a manual floor shift. Car must have been late thirties.
Jim Patterson had mentioned heavier braces on side mounts for a vehicle he has. It may be a good consideration for the Huson since the bouncing of the added weight on the fenders when the car is out on the road encountering bumps could fatigue small amounts until eventually small cracks form and spread. It could even happen in areas underneath where on the original braces or where those attachments are. Better to avoid a possible sudden, catastrophic failure while out cruising.
Agree with the height - it is YOUR decision regardless but it does look more prestigious at its final height -MORE important- your ability to MAKE the side mount is the real AWESOME thing - we all appreciate your "just do it" attitude !! Watching an artist work is the best kind of entertainment!! Thank you and additional thanks to great camera work so we don't miss the details
Chad and Jolene I love it just like I did before but I'm glad you said it down and moved it back because it even looks more perfect I would love to be able to drive and look good in this is Hudson shows the beauty that it was in 36 adjust up the look from then to now with the chop and the lowering and the fender skirts and all that you've done you and Jolene would look awesome riding down the highway cruising alone and this Hudson terraplane
If I remember correctly, the side-mounted antenna was added on by the former owner. It got in the way of Chad's zip cutter at the beginning of the roof chop. Any plans to replace it? If not the same style, how about the roof mounted chrome ball antenna, like the 1941-1953 Buick? Btw, front spare wheels are looking good! For a finished look, I vote for the body-colored hard shell covers with rear view mirrors on top.
Keep it going, gent and lady!
I've enjoyed every single video of this car's customization, and don't want it to end. As I've come to realize, you've tinkered and imagined then made that ponderance a reality- and it looks awesome! Not gonna lie, I did have some moments where I questioned if a thing here and there was the right thing to do- but what is "right" when it come to a thing of preference, as you say?
Here for the vision, as I trust it now.
The question now is: What to do next? Well, how about a pop-up sunroof and turning it into a sports coupe with no pillar? 🖖
Lower will make the lines of the car look much better.
Why chop the roof and lower the suspension and sit the sidemounts high?.
But its a fair amount of work to alter it.
Your certainly free to change your mind, modify what you will.
Its always a joy to watch you create. You two keep being you two!
Nothing better than a flexible ego and pride.Good man CHAD.
Was wondering if Chad thought about adding some support to the fenders for the added weight of the tires and wheels?
looks amazing Chad have you considered pulling in the bumpers a little make them a tighter fit, I thing that would round off the look awesomely
Hey Chad, are you gonna put some drain holes in the bottom of the mount so the water can drain out?
Looks GREAT !!! DON'T FORGET TO PUT DRAIN HOLES IN THE BOTTOM OF THE SIDE MOUNTS !!
The wheels look great, and the template you made for the emblems is so they are both on the same Terra-plane.
Spare fender mounted wheels look way better down and back towards the door. Good job.
Great job Chad! The side mount looks really great now with it moved back a bit. Great Camera work as always Jolene!
Hi there Chad & Jolene I hope you are both doing well today. I am glad that you moved the spare down it looks much better now with more of the front end exposed and the tire height looks better as well to me. Great work both of you as usual, I have never seen anything but good work out of either one of you in all the time I have been watching.
The car is looking good maybe on this one you could show putting in the small block Chevy and transmission too so you could show everyone you painting the car and if it was me I would use the flat clear on it just a thought but the car is really looking cool
It's your build Chad do it your way
Now that spare looks like it belongs there. Nice change. Trial and error always makes for a better job. But if it were mine I would just skip the one on the other side.
On the photos of the cream & black car, I like that swing away mounting bracket to hold the tire steady. I guess it has one or two stud bolts to keep the tire steady. Have you thought about how you will secure your tires?
The google images showed a metal cap covering the tread. Could possibly be the hold down for the tire without adding a mount
Very classy looking.
You go Bad Chad Do it your way. Looks Great
.
Chad I know this car won’t be out on rainy days but if you get caught out and it does get wet will the water run out of the wheel well or will it require you to drill a drain hole. I really can’t determine the angle of the well from my barocliner. Wish I could drop by or be there to help sometimes but never gonna happen.
Looks much better lower .don't forget to put drain holes in the bottom of the mount .😊
MUCH BETTER!! Now the side mounts look as if they are factory. Great work Chad, and Joline. We do want to see the glass going in when you do it.
Hey Jolene, can you please ask Chad if he could bring the bumpers closer to the body of the car. Just the distance between the bumpers and the body, not changing anything with the actual bumpers.
Looks so much better with the repositioning of the side mount. 👍🏻
The car looks really dope Chad. Very good design choices. Looks like a Duesenberg.
I don't recall you getting this car running. I hope whatever, you make it reliable, because this would be an awesome driver!
He did say he was putting a Chev V8 in it. Will this happen? Hopefully.
Years ago, in some car mag, I read "in the end the quality of the job will depend on your willingness to redo things" and I saw that here. Applies to most jobs really... seems the first time you do anything you usually screw it up some.
Fantastic I'm glad you changed it because it makes it look a h*** of a lot better and I'm really happy with it. I'm starting to really like. That 37 Hudson my 1st car was a 1947 Hudson Ford or Sedan with a straight 8. So you're doing a great job Jolene fanTastic. Job on the camera you all have a good day. It's been a pleasure watching you do this Chad. Thanks for all your hard work but you're doing can't wait to see the.
@George that was a typo error it was supposed to be 4-door sedan
It does look much better now. You work so fast that I can see where it would be easy to make a small mistake once in a while. You amaze me with the speed you work at and the quality of your work. An open mind is always nice to have...
It's really what you like. I did think the wheel was too high and I like the way it is now but you found your way and it looks good. Like also the wheel with that hub cap.
The Tires look Good to me And now they look better , Great Job Chad & Jolene ! Some times you can't see the forest threw the trees . When you look back at what you & Jolene do the only one you have to please is yourself !
Vast improvement by moving the wheel back and lower. Now you need a drain hole at the bottom of the wheel well.
Looks alot better..agree on the drain hole
When I said they are too high, I meant for appearances sake. I don't know if they are period correct or not. They just looked too big there. Again....just an opinion. The only opinions that count are Brad and Jolene's. But, they are better now.
Oh.....by the way. I watched the episode about the floorboards in Jim's 57 Oldsmobile lately, and forgot to comment! I have to say those were awesome!! Absolutely amazing job. I had a 57 Olds Super 88 when I was a senior in high school. Very powerful car. Never lost a green light to red light drag race. :)
Now I see the tire has a brace to keep from hitting the spare. No worries.
Look at the car from the front.....it seems funny the direction of the tire,,,,,,,,,,,,,It points out from the car,,,,,,,Is that what you want...?????..
The craft is one thing ,, but the vishion is the art..great look great job.
It's not easy trying to build something and everyone having a different opinion on how it should look in the end, but you changed the design and what that shows is you're a man that is open to suggestions and it also makes the audience feel part of the build, so much respect to you both Chad and Jolene, you guys rock.
You are both doing a great job. Thanks for sharing
this is an odd question, but do you add a drainage hole in the side mount for rain?
Far out bro, you are great source of inspiration.
All I can think about lately is getting stuck into my rust repairs and not with a feeling of despair but excitement.
Only problem is finding a decent small mig that can be run on a 7.5kva gas generator.
Thanks bud
Great Job as graded by this
86 yeay old builder. I would vote for a paint job to bring this 1936 art work up to the spectacular condition it is begging for.
Also great camara work by Jolene. Speaking of which
She should put the camara on its stand from time to time to allow her to shine in videos she Is creating & editing. Her work is key to seamlessly making each video not only a pleasure to watch as well a minutely see details which are key to the complete works.
Make sure to drill a drain hole in the bottom of that tire carrier. You don't want it filling up with water when it rains. Looks great with the lower positioning.
It's looking awesome ,and to admit you've made a "mistake"isn't really that difficult when you're building on the fly it's a part of the game, it's just that most people are too proud to admit they weren't doing the most perfect job when it comes to looks and Chad just tells the truth by saying ;You were right, I wasn't.
Many people can take that as an example I would say, Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing
Put long end facing rear so it looks like hood wings on ordeament .You did it perfect.
This thing is coming together quite nicely. It is great to see old school have a go attitude. No better way to grow than learning from mistakes.
Well now I liked it yesterday BUTI absolutely love it today. Love the wider white wall and the new position does look awesome. Little Isaac is watching faithfully and I know the family will be proud of how she looks!! Just awesome❤️
Ahhhhhh that’s much better chad,,it looks relly pretty now,,your doing a fantastic job on the wheel wells,,a suggestion on the chrome pices on the skirts,,put the round part of them centered with the center of the hubcap,, boy oh boy the car is sure looking fine,,I’m luvin it,,your putting all the area goodys add on’s on it,,I relly like that,, I did the same on my 48 plymouth,, hi to Jolene an fina,,luv ya’s,,👍👍😀.
Awesome job, love your channel. Was wondering what you will mount the spares to so they do not move? Don’t you need a structural mount? I’m sure you will figure it out.
Chad my friend, the side mounts now look great!
I am pleased to see you put something on the fender skirts like I mentioned a while back. BIG thumbs up!!
Side mount placement much nicer looking
Just a note of interest, when you made a template of the right side mount should you have taken it and turned it over for the left mount as a mirror image? Hoot
It’s their choice of happiness just glad they are showing the how to for the build it might inspire others in the future.
I have always said 2 or 3 heads are better than 1! Multiple perspectives and opinions are great as long as you are willing to hear some constructive criticism. With that being said…take what you like and throw the rest away. There is no right and wrong in art, its all about perspective and what makes you happy. The demonstration on how to go about creating side mounts is what is important. If you want to put them through the trunk lid then go for it 👍🏻👍🏻
Happy to see you dropped the tire. Everyone has their own taste, that is why I didn’t write in yesterday. Keep on keepin’
Perfect Chad! Looks amazing!
Just enough that the hubcap is not hitting the fender. 👍🏻😎
Give all your input on how he needs to do his work. He will do what he wants to do, its his vision not yours. So ,in the end it's always his masterpiece. 😊
maybe should have a drain hole in the pockets for water?
Looks great. I like the side mount. Want to say I know you have used them for years, but it's amazing how good you are with the grinders. NUFF SAID
You might need to drill holes in the tire mount so water can drain
Good job on the relocation on the side mounts, looks much better now. Just a thought on the belt idea to secure tire, if the belt works loose you may not be able to open the door. A bracket that secures the tire in place as would have been done originally may be a better choice.
Car is really coming together and the tire looks perfect where you now have it. Great job you two!
I wonder if the fender pieces cut out ,can be used to hold the tires in position ,placed on top of the tire.
That looks a LOT better, it looked wrong with it over the the top of the hood.
