- When I traveled to the south of India I visited Kerala on my motorcycle. This Kalari is located in Edapal called HGS Kalari. The owner and guru was extremely kind and organised a special performance specially for me. It was amazing for me to witness all these stages of kalaripayattu and it shows how diverse this martial arts really is. Enjoy this beauty!

I knew Kalari was great art, but the control they showed here with the swords, specially the flexible one and not getting themselves hurt is amazing.

Kalaripayyatu in kerala came from Lord Parashuram. Lord Shiva passed this knowledge to Lord parashuram. In olden days only South Indian Hindu kings used this in battles also many common Hindus started practicing this. In this modern age many Muslims & Christains are also interested in learning.
Kerala has had India's only native Muslim royal family and they used to practice Kalaripayattu as well. It was essential warfare at those times and didn't have religious connotation. So Muslims are not only now starting to learn kalaripayattu
Learning is one thing origin is another, this is an indigenous art form ie Hindu origin

I see so many weird comments from certain extremists here and I just wanted to mention that this is taken place in kerala and women and minorities are given importance and live far progressively here than in other places in India, in kerala its not uncommon to see muslims or christians practicising and running kalari places infact muslims and christians have been learning it for centuries as in a lot of kings and leaders had to do so in order for warfare. So please kindly do not bring your propagandas and prejudices to kerala thankyou. This was a wonderful video.

@@neeraj8069being a kalari student in kerala let me assure you that the only qualities required to learn kalari is perseverance, enthusiasm & 100% loyalty towards gurukkals or kalari masters. Idols may or maynot be there in every kalari. If absence of idols or traditional practices or any other prejudices change ones attitude towards kalari then he is unfit to learn this art. He won't survive it. So le me warn you to stop mixing religion or your views atleast in kalari matters. We know how to keep it 'safe'.

Kalarippayattu is not the mother of all martial arts.
Stories of "Kalarippayattu being the mother of martial arts including kung fu", "Bodhidharma teaching Indian martial arts at shaolin temple", "bodhidharma being a Kalarippayattu practioner", "Bodhidharma being a tamil pallava King" is actually a myth and a big lie which is spread by Kalarippayattu practitioners and Indian pseudohistorians since late 1990's to popularise the art and to claim the superiority of Kalarippayattu over other martial arts.
China was already flourished with martial arts centuries before the arrival of Bodhidharma. Shuai jiao /jiao di which is said to be the precursor of kung fu said to have existed in China for over 6000 years ago even before Bodhidharma's birth. Bodhidharma's first chinese disciple Huike was an exceptional martial artist and a warrior (ex military), before he became a monk under bodhidharma and started preaching Buddhism.
Bodhidharma was a Zen Buddhism preacher. Not a martial artist. Bodhidharma's contribution to China was meditation and yogic practices. Not martial arts.
Yi Jin Jing is an exercise manual which as per legends say Bodhidharma supposedly wrote which paved the way for the creation of Kung Fu. Unfortunately, this book was written somewhere during 17th century, centuries after Bodhidharma's death. This manual never existed during Bodhidharma's life time. There are references to fictional heroes created long after Bodhidharma supposedly died. The exercises in the manual are of internal Taoist nature, not Indian or even Buddhist.
A fictional story called ‘The Travels of Lao Ts'an’ published in 1907 stated that Bodhidharma taught martial arts. This is the earliest reference that Bodhidharma knew martial arts. Also this book was written long after Bodhidharma's death.
Apart from Pseudohistoric articles written by indian Pseudohistorians and kalarippayattu practitioners on internet, youtube videos and some indian movies like 7 aum arivu (2011 film), baaghi etc. which spread false information about Kung Fu and Bodhidharma, there is no historical evidence to prove that Kalarippayattu is the mother of all martial arts including kung fu.

I am not sure and sorry if anything said incorrectly as I don’t know a bit about your skill.I feel you are trying to understand the movement aspects of Gada, and the others shown are looking to attack or defend. You might explore more may be in this aspect. Thanks for all your dedication. Similar to yoga, Kalariyayapattu gives a sense of inner strength , hope this catches up with our Indians.

One big mistake. The floor is hard and bound to get injuries. Traditionally its not hard and made of mud. The tiles here is influencing the movement a lot because they are more careful not to fall down. The grip on the floor is essential.
The artform itself is of guerilla fighting. So for it to be of practical use adapting to current conditions is only sensible

@@TheFlowingDutchman Kalarippayattu is a part of Dhanurveda(an Upaveda). So it came from Vedas itself (Hindu divine knowledge). When you learn Vedas, you must follow the traditions. These knowledges are passed down through gurukul tradition over many centuries. When you learn from a guru who in turn learned from a proper guru through gurukul traditions, then only you will get the blessings and consent from the higher beings who gave humans this knowledge, this will allow you to use the knowledge properly when needed. This applies to all Hindu knowledges. Before learning you must bow down to and get blessings from the higher beings and gurus. Kalari Poothara and Guruthara are very important.
