Emma, you’re amazing at how you deal with seeing those mites. You’ve been struggling with them for a while. If I was going the natural route, I’d do one last big chemical treatment on all my plants, then start from scratch with the natural stuff. Thanks for sharing!
honestly finding pests doesn't phase me as much anymore... I've seen so many on tons of my plants nothing surprises me! I think I'm tempted to do just that!
that high-speed cleanup segment is so satisfying.
⚡️🧹⚡️
I'm so proud of you, Emma! You seem to putting yourself before your plants, and that's a very healthy thing to do!
You also seem a bit gentler towards yourself, and are managing expectations well, balancing your goals and your needs.
You're the most important person in your life, and you are so hardworking. You deserve all the kindnesses in the world, and you definitely earned that bubble tea. 😊
Looking forward to be a witness to your journey as a person and as a plant parent.
awww thank you!! I'm defo working on being less harsh on myself so glad it's coming across. I think it might always be a bit of a process though... 🥰
@@GoodGrowing I'm sure it will, I have the same issue. The more you consciously do it, though, the more of a habit it will become. It's a good habit to have.
Emma, strike the balance that feels right for you. As much as I love predatory mites and am thankful you made me discover them, making this infestation manageable for you is the most important. At the end of the day, if doing predatory mites and washing the plants is impossible for you to keep up with at the moment, it will only prolonge the situation. So find the right balance for you to beat up these pets. You got this! I'm also fighting this war on my side!
Exactly!
I know I'm late to this... So, I hope you won your war 😊🪴🐝-Bee
I love having brand new planty content to watch while I’m doing my own plant chores and repotting 🥰🪴 you and Claire both uploaded so I have plenty to watch while I work ❤️🥰
yesss! Hope you got a lot done between the two videos 😉
I've started using predatory mites after watching both you and Claire. I particularly like them as I have a disability that can make plant keeping difficult. I use anything that makes plant keeping easier but most of all enjoyable. However if I was in your shoes I'd do a full provanto treatment on every single plant, wait the 2 weeks and then reintroduce the predatory mites. I understand why you've pushed so hard but your plants and your mental health are more important. But whatever you chose will be what's right for you. Sending hugs, because you looked like you needed it 🤗.
Are you treating all phases of the thrips lifecycle?
Slow release sachets are great for the young larvae, but they don’t account for pupae or adult thrips. Are you using lacewings/pirate bugs for the adults, and stratiolaelaps/nematodes for the pupae?
Thank you for being so open about your struggles with pests and normalizing them in plant collections. I hope your battle with thrips and spider mites gets easier 💜
I like to fold the connector flaps facing in towards each other, like an L and backwards L (if that makes sense) when putting in soil because it’s helps with stabilizing! But if it’s a bigger pot, you can fold them outwards instead of inwards.
Also, regarding the mites.. I’ve heard that predatory bugs move fast and bad pests move slower apparently! So that should help tell the difference.
Fighting bugs is a nightmare. Do what you need to do. You can go back to natural once you have control of them. Tell yourself what you would tell a best friend...we're often harder on ourselves. I have read that book! And those after it, they're all brilliant!! Just git the latest one to buy and read. Look forward to reading them. Enjoy!
yeah ofc I'm much harder on myself than anyone else... I think I just need to bite the bullet
I also noticed my Hoya Polyneara with a few yellowing leaves, checking for mites now!
I wonder if tall drink/water bottles could be used as a mini moss plant, with a slit of plastic cut out and stuffed with moss! Take care of yourself Emma. 💚🪴🫂🫂
oh no!!! yeah check it out! and yes I've seen people use drinks bottles cut in half before as lazy poles!
there is solid research done with using neem oil for treating pests, but not by spraying on the leaves. When used as a soil drench the active in neem oil builds up within the plant system and pests will be killed as they feed on the plant. I use neem oil like this and it definitely works, but needs to be done regularly to build up the levels of toxin within the plant
Great tip! I may try this
I second this. I have switched from regular leaf spraying to watering with my mixture and the thrips have decreased significantly!
I still find some here or there so not foolproof but I take my time to check all leaves to have a piece of mind
Hi, I just wanted to say I love watching your videos!!! Everything you post is so descriptive and very helpful!! 😊
Hi Emma you have an expensive and special collection. I read some recommendations considering pests, first find the source plant of infestation, all things you do are good. However isolate the source pull the plant , isolate, treat the entire plant with isopropyl alcohol and water or the spray of choice. If still pests , the eggs are in the soil and most likely the roots of the plant or plants. Now comes the pain, especially if the plants are rare, destroy the offending plant, they recommend fire. Otherwise the pests travel from one plant to another especially if they are in close contact.
Living the long video. You could just have your own policy where you use provonto when mites get to a certain limit, you’ve cut its use massively & that’s fantastic for many reasons. Xx
true true! I think I just have very all or nothing thinking... there defo is a middle ground!
That's a great perspective!
Thanks Emma I replanted a rescued coral cactus I got for £4 today so in plant credit now right 😂. I have also watered and dusted a few plants watching planty videos helps me focus x
oh defo in credit!! and yes well done!!
I am sorry for the pest problems but I was educated when you walked us through the discovery under the microscope. I need to better inspect my plants especially before I bring them back inside for the winter season. I enjoy your vids, thanks for your time. You are appreciated!
so glad I could help! It's defo something I would have wanted before I knew what to look for! Good luck! hopefully all yours are good!!
Yes, how much is too much fighting these pests?? I don’t know… Esp when you start with the natural and 2 mod. down, I say nope and use chemicals , in the soil, outside the soil and on the plant itself AND they’re still there!!!!!
I totally understand where you’re at with this and I’m sure we will both be victorious 💛👍
Hang in there bc you and Claire need to hold my virtual hand starting up with……”ponnn”….. lol. (I go around saying that).
ahhh so exciting that you're starting with pon! Always here if you have questions!
Provanto then once the majority have pests have gone, go mad with natural measures. Trying to deal with that volume of pests naturally is a gargantuan task ands its obviously starting to affect how you feel - which just isn't worth it. Don't panic about upsetting your soil biome, unless you drench that thoroughly in provanto too, spraying foliage wont have such an adverse effect that it wont bounce back :)
yeah I'm very tempted to do just that... but honestly the thought of spraying my entire collection with anything is a monumental task 😂 I'll just need to get over it and take the plunge!
@@GoodGrowing rope Claire or the other half in to help you out 😂 good luck, you got this!
Where did you get the prop box? I need some slim and tall ones. Yours looks great. 😊 I love the Peru it's so interesting do you think it's worth buying a runner to prop? I've heard they can be finicky.
I've had this box for ages so not totally sure where I got it but probably amazon. I think I originally got it to store soil mix in back when I was mixing up my own, so I wanted it to be pretty sealed. I've had a peru before and find them to be quite slow. I've got a whole video on them if you fancy some more info 😉
Hi Emma, always enjoy your videos. I have a Mathilde over water plant that is changing to a lighter green and one yellow leaf. What should I do. It's still wet and should I let it dry more then look at roots. But then what if there rotten or damaged . Need help: this my first hoya , house plant. 😢
Goals are great but they are just that. Goals change and all we can do as you said is our best. Good luck x💮 PS... Have I missed something, are you on a new fitness regime.
true true! I think I'm my harshest critic 🙃 and no this is the first time I've mentioned running but I've been doing it for a couple of months now and I really enjoy it!
Hey Emma, thanks for motivating me to do my plant chores!! Also, wanted to know where you get your sulphur from? Is it a particular type you use or would just any sulphur do? Haven't dealt with flat mites before...not sure if they exist here in Sydney (not come across anyone here who has). Hope your Hoya recovers....great vid👍🏼💪🙏🏼
always glad to help! what did you get done? and the sulphur I got is bonide brand which I think is a US brand? not totally sure if flat mites exist elsewhere but I don't see why they wouldn't, except for AU being super careful about import regulations... so maybe not 🤷♀️
@@GoodGrowing Hopefully you’re right about the flat mites in Aussieland🙏🏻
As for my plant chores, I made some moss poles ready for tomorrow’s potting up of my philos (x 5); washed all my plants (we were away for 2.5 weeks) and removed all dead/dying leaves and or debris from as many plants as I could get through in a day (more tomorrow) and lastly I’ve earmarked 6 of my Alocasia that I will transfer to pon (order arrives this week). You also reminded me to actually WRITE A LIST of things to do so as not to procrastinate any longer. Thanks buddy 🫶
What are those black dots we saw when you used the microscope?
Do you use isopropyl alcohol on your plants? I examine as I go and absolutely drench them in ISO if they're New o'r looking iffy. It's 70% with water and I out them somewhere with good airflow or a fan nearish. It's essentially natural but will kill your beneficials. I've heard some people fully submerge plant for 30 mins. I usually follow up with a foliar feed once dry. Hopefully you manage to get on top of it. Look into ecothrive charge and silica/ monosilicic acid too. They help the plant improve natural defenses. Also fulvic acid too 😂 I could go on, love this stuff
I use isopropyl for spider mites and it's worked wonders. Not sure if they'd kill the flat mites too... there's not as much info out there on them.. I'll defo look into those other things though as they sound super helpful!
watching intently as i have these poles for my philodendron glorious which needs an extend and i have no idea how to attach them together xd
I've got a short of how I extended my glorious a while back so might be worth watching that as well! good luck!
My Dubia is doing the exact same and going off to the side 😅
haha okay we're not alone then!
Extending its pole at the weekend so hoping to encourage it to upwards 🤞
Would provanto work on flatmites or just sulphur? Just out of interest. X
so provanto doesn't work on spider mites so I almost doubt it would work on flat mites.. though sulphur does work on both apparently so maybe that's the route I need to go
@@GoodGrowing oh ok…I assumed it worked on spider mites 🤦🏻♀️. I’ve not had them yet…probs jinxed it now though. I have had aloe mites-quite similar to flat mites-I binned it, as I have a few aloes. Xx
I see sweet Cleo😊
There were some cute bits of her being a little menace when I was packing those parcels but the footage was so blurry I couldn't include 😭
But the beneficial sachets work????
they do preventatively but they don't kill adult thrips. Honestly for the size of my collection I'd probably need a sachet on every other plant to properly prevent everything and it would get costly. So I get a fewer and put them in high density areas instead. I think my issue has gotten a bit more than the sachets can handle though, so I could go for more predatory mites in larger numbers or go the chemical route
@@GoodGrowing I have been thinking about getting them. Our house is.old. I don't have a collection like you and Claire. Can you have spider mites without the webs???
I love your channel and I have learned alot from you schooling. Thank you. 😊
Could we get an update on the terrarium you made? 😊
absolutely! Will include in my updates video later this month! 😉
Emma this is hard to watch. I’m sorry you are struggling with pests so much 😢. If you want to try a really good miticide, which I’ve heard also works on thrips too, I’m more than happy to send you some killermite. It takes drops each time for ltrs of the stuff. It saved my mental health and collection. I’ve had two plants with outbreaks in a year and this was cured straight away. I’ve tried predatory mites before and found very very little success for the cost. Honestly the best plant purchase I’ve bought.
Love the shirt. ❤🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️❤️
