My kid is homeschooled all year round. It's actually more relaxing because if we have to take days off here and there its not a problem, plus we do take a few weeks off every quarter or so. So I don't think of things like 'going back to school'. However, if we did the traditional thing then yeah for the memories.

I will add a couple things to your first story: With identity theft yes there could be multiple W2's coming to his house or mailing service or even his home could operate as a mailing service. And they could be from different companies also. So that's not hard to accomplish from his end.
The traffic is coming from China and not North Korea. There are legit reasons to have traffic from China. There is a higher population of Asians with a talent for Tech.
However seeing the traffic is a problem because unless there were agreements to have spyware installed to watch. Though unauthorized apps were installed...
And we don't know his complete setup. I doubt any of the laptops were used as a router, so if he had one laptop receiving the traffic from different locations in China which was then sent to the individual laptops. Since we are not there why would anything coming from any other device at the same location look suspicious?
