I was 12 or 13 and I was helping my friend watch her younger sisters down the street, my dad called us and told us to get everyone to the basement and turn the news on. I was so excited, I hate roller coasters but I love crazy weather and storms. I should have been a storm chaser.
I remember watching this live on TV at 9years old in Orem Utah. The footage was showing from on top of a tower near by and we saw the tornado skip over Temple Square and land on the other side. Our jaws just dropped. I'll never forget that.
I experienced one as a kid in a suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand. A very rare place for one to form. I remember my dad getting me as a 9 yr old to hold the ranch slider glass so it wouldn't shatter. We were lucky being on the edge of it. Dad was happy though because the hail stripped the paint off 2 sides of the house and he was planning to repaint that month. My friends house was mowed to the floor slab but no deaths. Very exciting as a kid.
@@larryhinze8658 well i would say Utah is a better place then California they're the biggest supporters for gay rights, then you have Oregon that legalized every drug and it dont matter how old you are you can buy drugs at any age. Then texas has the death penalty as well isnt god the only one allowed to pass that kind of judgement?
I was driving right infront of the Temple after leaving the mall when this took place, probably five blocks away. On leave from Hill AFB and taking the day off and it just randomly came out of nowhere and I recall it nailing the Delta Center. It was the only time I had ever seen the Temple open up to let people take shelter.
I was standing by the Window at work, at Hill AFB, and the sky was dark Green, and we had never seen the sky look like this, and someone yelled, get away from the window. That looks like a tornado. It did not hit the Base, but I remember that day, and then we were listening to what was happening on the radio. I was always told that the mountains protected us from tornadoes.
Me too, 3 or 4 years prior the movie twister came out, I had it on VHS and watched it all the time. When the tornado hit in downtown SLC I was in canyon rim off 33rd east and 33rd south and my dad called and told me to get me and my friends to the basement, I was so excited and I told my dad "I thought you said we wouldn't have to worry about tornados here" and he said "I never thought we would have to." He also said something interesting about my animals, I was begging him to pull them inside I had 3 bunnies and 2 chickens, my dad said no because they were going to tell him how close it is to the house, if the animals start freaking out my dad would know to run downstairs and take shelter.
I was about to start 4th grade that year. My teacher at school and everyone I knew said it could never happen it was impossible. I didn't think it would happen but even at that age knew it was at least possible.
I was working in Bountiful, UT. When I saw how green the sky was, I knew Salt Lake City was in trouble. My ex was doing some shopping on the west side of Salt Lake City. Luckily, she was far enough west from downtown.
My dad was working in salt lake city at the time of the tornado and he saw it rip through a stadium and he saw big electrical explosions coming from the tornado
Yep, I remembered where I was. I was in West Valley. It was not until later that day when I went to the Hollywood Connection, and that is when I heard what happened.
I was there. I was working for Sierra Designs and was attending the Outdoor Retail Show at the Convention Center. Coming from Northern California, needless to say most of us had never seen anything like it! Scary!
On that very day, Aug 11, 1999, a total solar eclipse occurred in parts of Europe. Was a big deal big then. Didn't know about this rare SLC tornado on the same date until today.
YO! The Port Huron Times Herald! That was my first real job, delivering papers for them. But this article was long before my time. We had our own downtown tornado in 1953 which is probably why it called it "unusual, not impossible."

I was driving on the overpass on 1300 south. I glanced toward downtown and saw it. It looked orange from where I was and my brain tried to make sense of it. A huge fire? A massive dust cloud? A........ tornado?? Nah, couldn't be. Wait, it is! What?! Then my car radio hit dead air and the rain came down so hard everyone had to stop driving. I got to work in the industrial area near California Ave. I told everyone what I'd seen. No one believed me until the music on the radio was interrupted by the news. I wasn't sure my high-rise in central city would still be there when I arrived home later that night. It was. Crazy day.
@IUseRandomPfps naaa. Bad weather, it's been heading all over the Eastern coast past the Mississippi. It is bound to hit mountain time sooner or later. California and all them guys have earthquakes.

If the city was destroyed, they would have taxed the destruction and watered down the beer even more. Remember, separation of church and state does NOT apply to Utah.
all tornadoes are real tornadoes f???wad, just because its not a match against well constructed buildings compared to suburbans doesnt mean its any less of a tornado.
