- Exploring the sounds and uses of the Digitech DOD Meatbox on Bass, Guitar and trying different Guitar Pedal Combinations. Not sure if it's actually Meatbox or Meat Box.
Or if it's Digitech DOD Meatbox subsynth or DOD Meatbox Subsynth. But I do know it's an awesome pedal on bass and guitar. I guess it could be Digitech DOD Meat Box Subsynth. That hurts to look at.
The DOD Meatbox Sub Synth is a monophonic Super low Subharmonic generator as well as an octave box. As a result it artificially adds notes below the notes played in the C0 and C1 range.
It's a really useful sound design pedal, and the way it pairs with other pedals make it endlessly entertaining while trying different combinations. I focused on combining it with the DOD Grunge FX69B, The DOD Gonkulator and DOD Envelope Filter primarily because I thought you could really hear a range of sounds while focusing on the DOD family considering the recent news with Digitech, their previous owners and new DOD owners.
DOD Pedals have worked their way into my heart as compact little weirdos while being relatively affordable.

If you get a trs to t & s splitter cable, you can run wet and dry separately out of the output jack. That's how you keep the pedal from devouring a guitar's input signal.
Secret that not too many seem to know: if you can't find a DOD Meatbox don't despair. The Digitech Dirty Robot pretty much has a Meatbox buried inside of it. You can tweak a Dirty Robot to basically duplicate the Meatbox.
Well now I need that pedal
@@BGBSATX It is extremely versatile and CRAZY. Honestly, it is just about the most entertaining pedal I have ever owned. Some sounds are funny and weird and others are dark and ominous. In the "Sub" setting you can then turn the Modulation all the way down and all the other controls pretty much either off or most of the way down and there you have a "Meatbox" basically.
This has seriously been the most helpful video for me! I just got a meatbox and am loving it.
Really glad to hear that! Exactly what I was hoping for!
Like, reviews are fine, but I’m wondering if something like this is actually more helpful for people, especially in pedals like the meatbox and gonkulator where like… really, what are your options? They’re both really unique, a review won’t have much to compare against, but knowing how to use them is way more helpful IMO
Super helpful! My friend Karina are starting a band and this helps alot!
Thanks! Watch all of the videos, twice!!
From my understanding the Gonkulator is a ring mod on top of a grunge pedal that drives the distortion and gain portion of the pedal. Hence it’s awesome with the Meatbox.
Yeah, they don’t let you make EQ choices though, which makes me wonder where it stays.
Also, a important but subtle distinction: I think instead of the ring mod being on top of or before the distortion I think it’s actually in parallel which is what makes it more useful, IMO, I’m setting up for filming a video on the gonkulator next, still doing some experiments
@@BGBSATX I got the OG Gonk for like 20 bucks back in 2000 and I would love to get my hands on the reissue since you can change the pitch but I’ll never part with it if I can help it. One of my favorites.
@@brandonwilburn1589 nicccceee, I got my Reissue for $170 a few months ago, totally worth it just for that bass tone IMO.
I also managed to get that Grunge for $70, was super stoked about that

Any additional tips or considerations when pairing a baritone guitar with the Meatbox?
DOD! DOD! DOD! DOD! DOD! DOD!
Hey i need a Space Echo as well. Buy me pedals as well. The Way Huge Atreides is one i need to rebuy. Dials in the Gary Numan Cars tone perfectly
Blows the speaker... Oh I know what you're talking about! ;)
That’s good, because I didn’t
Is the envelope filter like a compressor?
More like a kind of autowah. It’s a band pass where the frequency moves based on how hard you hit it
Should there be any consideration for what amp I'm using if I'm trying to use this pedal on guitar?
You see a few odd horror stories of people messing their amp up.
I used my Supro 1685RT for playing on this video… since it’s a tube amp I would suspect that the excessive lows just distorted and normalized a bit.
I can see how this would be a concern but I would recommend just getting a compressor after it and an EQ to notch out the super low stuff.
Also, using a distortion (like the grunge) after it will make the difference way more noticeable without killing a speaker…. It has to do with harmonics etc, but distortion has a way of making the next harmonics take the place of the fundamental psychoacoustically.
Of course… be careful
I have one with flys on it.
D♥️D
That’s the OG, niiiicccceeee, they are fetching a pretty penny now.
Honestly not sure if they made any changes between that and the reissue.
@@BGBSATX I'd like to try the new one to see what improvements they made, but I'm used to the 🪰
@@R1GAMBLER as I was redoing the thumbnail I noticed that the reissue does have the fly.
For a second I had thought that maybe the one I got was a misprint, hence why harmon was dumping it at a lower price, but then I checked mine and it does also have the fly? For a second I thought maybe I had happened into a collector’s piece, lol
Bass looks very Woodardry
I bought it from Woodard!
It’s become the favorite bass I own, it’s not like a good bass for everything, sometimes it really doesn’t work for what I need, but when it hits a sweet spot boy howdy it hits the sweet spot. I love it.
Okay okay, so if you know Woodard do we know eachother IRL??
@@BGBSATX I used to have an affinity for the Lyle trapezoidal single coils and picked that up some time ago and passed it onto James. Good to see it at a good home.
@@BGBSATX maybe. sents a fb msg.
Sounds like crap.
Oh, it’s certainly not for everyone, but when you need the beef, the meatbox has got it
