    I just got a 6 month old hedgehog and he was the pet shop’s favourite. The pet shop was a really good one and someone would spend 5 minutes handling each hedgehog every morning before opening and we got the most tame and gentle one. However when we bought him home he went from the active and loveable boy we saw in the shop to a spikey, hissing ball of rage. Of a night he will get out of his little bowl and eat and drink but as soon as I go to put in more food he shrinks into a ball. It’s only been 2 days but I’m just feeling really discouraged. I am not gonna give up on him of course not, all of our other pets were rescued and quite mentally scarred and we didn’t give up on them and they’re fine now, but it just feels harder when this pet actually has the power to spike you 😂

    Here in the uk we are lucky to have wild hedgehogs although sadly there numbers have plummeted since the 1950s due to habitat lose & more roads being built which many sadly perish on trying to cross but there's thousands of us around the county doing what we can to help these awesome little creatures by making our gardens hedgehog friendly, getting hedgehog houses & putting out food & water for them.

    I remember carrying 2 into my room sneaking them in, pet them and watch them roam around the Room. When they did get a bit too defensive I’d usually just grab the whole body even when curled up into a ball and try not to pove around much just to not let the spikes sink in my flesh.
    Basically just holding a very spiky ball, but aimt heavy enough to pierce the skin.

    Thanks for sharing. I'd like to add that it helps when you scoop them up from the back. Hedgehogs tend to get defensive when you approach facing them or try to pat their heads.

    • @Broskiiiiiiiiiiii
      @Broskiiiiiiiiiiii Před 6 lety +9

      nutbrittle NOOOO! Please do not spread false advice. Hedgehogs are naturally prey animals meaning they are naturally quite timid/ skittish and alert so scooping them from the back kicks in there prey instincts to panic, hiss, pop , spike etc. Please pick them up from the side, not the front though as they like to not have there sight/ sense of smell hindered and if you hand is is front of there face it will hinder there senses. So PLEASE PICK UP YOUR HEDGIE FROM THE ***SIDE**

      Hey I have a hedgehog I don’t think it’s a good idea to scoop them but I had to do that to put him in his cage also yess u can’t pet their heads cause most hedges are totally blind adding a defense of spikes helps them know that not much will hurt them

    On my way to work I saw a hedgehog in the street. He didn't run away which I was surprised, and maybe I shouldn't have but I picked him up. He seemed really relaxed and didn't go into a ball he let me stroke him or her lol. It seemed odd that it was just wondering around the street like that. Does this mean he was tame? Hopefully he wasn't an escaped pet. I placed him in a grassy area with bushes and left him. It was like 4am maybe he was just sleepy. It just seemed odd he didn't run away or act afraid when picked up. Is this usual for a wild hedgehog? He seemed very tame.

    • @Hellfyre17
      @Hellfyre17 Před 5 lety

      If they have the quills straight out then they can penetrate the skin but it hurts less than a bee sting. More like a tiny splinter. When the quills are even slightly bent they usually fold into down and don't hurt.

    Mine likes to bite and he’s 6 weeks old , I’ve tried getting him out his cage and maybe letting him burrow in a blanket or hoodie . Sometimes that helps but not really. I don’t wanna leave him in his cage all the time. I am afraid to let him run. Around the house due to wires and mouse traps. What do I do to tame him. He’s always so mean

      +Amanda Holderness in the beginning, they can be uncomfortable, but after some time they don't bother you at all! Take it from me, I'll gladly pick up a fully spiked and hissing hedgehog bare handed, it doesn't bother me, but I've had tons of practice :)

    A few years ago, I moved two hedgehogs from the road to the nearby forest. I got lucky, no real injuries.
    The first hedgehog was on the wrong side of the road (at night) and the other side (the only safe side, a forest) had a rock wall that was to tall for it. I touched it briefly, it went ball-shape and I could pick it up very gently and move it quickly to the forest. My hands were a bit itchy for a day after that.
    A few months later, in daylight, a huge hedgehog (very wide, the size of a small dog), started crossing the road in front of me just as a car was slowly approaching. The driver stopped, I picked the hedgehog from the underside and moved it to a nearby garden (the forest was too far).
