I am a RN who became ill in 2020. It took me over a year to receive the medical treatment I needed and I ended up losing everything and am now living in a homeless shelter. I served for 30 years as a RN and my own medical community failed me. I haveI finally received the much needed surgery and treatment and am now recovering. Yes the same has happened to me i was left on my own , my particular illness made it so i could not eat, they waited 4 months to do surgery, I’m about 95 pounds, I lost 45 lbs, and a month out from surgery at this point. I’ve lost all my clients as I was self employed, I’m still weak and trying to heal. I don’t understand how this can happen in the richest country in the world. Healthcare in this country is not just ridiculously expensive but it can be downright dangerous from unneeded prescriptions and unneeded surgical procedures. I am a "casualty" of this poor system. I read somewhere that if minimum wage had kept up with inflation the minimum wage would be around 23 dollars an hour. I've been a supporter and contributor for a number of years. Absolutely... the people who feel that "no one can live on less than $250,000 a year" need to go out and meet the people, many who would like to live on "just" 20% of that. As a senior who has been trapped for decades under a mountain of student loan debt, I will never be able to pay it all off. It has ruined my credit scores and greatly denied me the ability to buy a home or a newer car. This is not only financially crushing, but psychologically devastating to me after working on obtaining higher education that has not enabled me to pay off student loans that will outlive me. Neither has it enabled me to climb the social ladder. And I am not the only senior in this situation. Like many younger people, there are many of us older folks whose lives have been financially ruined under this current, dysfunctional higher education system. I live in Southern Minnesota. When I was job searching this year, I found that many job advertisements neglected to say the the pay of the job. The job I ended up getting was as a driver in food service, where I had to use my own vehicle. They advertised it as $25/hour with tips. Turned out that base pay was $13/hour and that the reimbursement for gas counted towards the $25/hour. I made $600 or less per pay period while working 36 hours every week. Anything outside of my rent or car bills relied on customer tips. I was only there for 3 months before I had maxed out my credit cards, my tires needed replacing, and I had no money to fix my car that I'd been using for the job.
You are my hero. I wrote hundreds of postcards to PA, and Oz lost. I will STAND UP with you for all of us. I can best do that with a specific assignment. Make PSA's and CZcams videos with specific "to do" items. We want our democracy to survive and thrive. Help us help you help us.

Thank you Bernie for bringing your conscious leadership to this role. Things have to change! I specially as a person who’s been living with a chronic illness for twenty years, our medical system isn’t interested in getting to the root cause because it’s more profitable to give pills to mask the symptoms. And because I can only work part-time because of fatigue and pain, I also don’t qualify for disability benefits, yet I barely make enough to survive. A huge gap in the disability system, when people who lost limbs or eyesight or have cancer, are waiting years, sometimes dying before receiving assistance!

When cancer struck i was fortunate enough to have a community Medicaid program that did my surgery & care, but not the medicine which was 300.00 at the time. We need changes. I’m so glad to hear you will be focusing on education and health. Our education system needs serious reform. Critical thinking and civics and probably other basics should to be taught in all schools perhaps starting at an earlier age and perhaps at every grade level. If the health of our democracy is dependent on voters, then we need to educate our future generations of voters. Also although it’s great kids are encouraged to go to college after high school, some people are not ready or are uninterested in higher education and there should be a more organized effort to help them find careers too. There are jobs that require skill and experience more than academia and there should be programs in every high school that connect kids with those types of jobs (maybe in the form of apprenticeships or internships) so when they graduate, they have a purpose and a possible livelihood. Maybe some regions offer programs for young people already but every high school should imo. Maybe there are better ways and I don’t know if this is within the scope of your committee but regardless, I’m glad these vital topics are getting your attention and congratulations on the chairmanship.

I love Bernie Sanders!! How many other Senators took the time to make a statement like this? He understands what those of us who are living below poverty level need to survive. I turned 70 last March and if I wasn't fortunate enough to have low-income housing, I don't know where I would be. The COLA increase I am getting will be a big help, but we all know costs are going to keep going up, too. This is what Bernie Sanders understands.
Let me be clear. This is not a rant or whine session. But it's real and people need to know how this affects so many of us.
As a senior who has been trapped for decades under a mountain of student loan debt, I will never be able to pay it all off. It has ruined my credit scores and greatly denied me the ability to buy a home or a newer car. This is not only financially crushing, but psychologically devastating to me after working on obtaining higher education that has not enabled me to pay off student loans that will outlive me. Neither has it enabled me to climb the social ladder. And I am not the only senior in this situation. Like many younger people, there are many of us older folks whose lives have been financially ruined under this current, dysfunctional higher education system.

I live in Southern Minnesota. When I was job searching this year, I found that many job advertisements neglected to say the the pay of the job. The job I ended up getting was as a driver in food service, where I had to use my own vehicle. They advertised it as $25/hour with tips. Turned out that base pay was $13/hour and that the reimbursement for gas counted towards the $25/hour. I made $600 or less per pay period while working 36 hours every week. Anything outside of my rent or car bills relied on customer tips. I was only there for 3 months before I had maxed out my credit cards, my tires needed replacing, and I had no money to fix my car that I'd been using for the job.
I'm originally from St. James . . I had hoped things were better there. The company should have been using company cars.

Thank you Bernie for bringing your conscious leadership to this role. Things have to change! I specially as a person who’s been living with a chronic illness for twenty years, our medical system isn’t interested in getting to the root cause because it’s more profitable to give pills to mask the symptoms. And because I can only work part-time because of fatigue and pain, I also don’t qualify for disability benefits, yet I barely make enough to survive. A huge gap in the disability system, when people who lost limbs or eyesight or have cancer, are waiting years, sometimes dying before receiving assistance!

I pay more in federal taxes than..., I have ran my own company for 17 years, purchased my home through the USDA, & raised my son on my own(his daycare way back was 200.00 a month). When cancer struck i was fortunate enough to have a community Medicaid program that did my surgery & care, but not the medicine which was 300.00 at the time. We need changes. I’m so glad to hear you will be focusing on education and health. Our education system needs serious reform. Critical thinking and civics and probably other basics should to be taught in all schools perhaps starting at an earlier age and perhaps at every grade level. If the health of our democracy is dependent on voters, then we need to educate our future generations of voters. Also although it’s great kids are encouraged to go to college after high school, some people are not ready or are uninterested in higher education and there should be a more organized effort to help them find careers too. There are jobs that require skill and experience more than academia and there should be programs in every high school that connect kids with those types of jobs (maybe in the form of apprenticeships or internships) so when they graduate, they have a purpose and a possible livelihood. Maybe some regions offer programs for young people already but every high school should imo. Maybe there are better ways and I don’t know if this is within the scope of your committee but regardless, I’m glad these vital topics are getting your attention and congratulations on the chairmanship.
