When Rob is talking about skating he says “like” a lot, but when he’s talking about business he doesn’t say it at all. You can really tell that he’s in his element when discussing his business ventures. Just something that stood out to me. Great episode.
At this point he’s been a business man 10 times longer than he was a pro skater so it makes sense to me.
cant really talk about how to ollie in a room full of skaters, he sounds like a homie talking about skating, but he sounds like hes wearing a suit talking about business so i think its harder to find words for skateboarding so like and um are just the filler

@@dimaermolenko98 Maybe you're at a different stage in life. I'm 40, can't really ride anymore due to back issues, building my own small business is giving me as much happiness now as skateboarding did back in the day.
It's hard to explain, but when you start to become the master of your own destiny, even starting a small side hustle that grows to pay you a reliable wage, you look at the world differently. You're no longer living at the whims of a boss, you're entirely your own master.
That is the mindset Rob has, I understand it. But it took me till late 30's to be ready for that mindset.

The biggest takeaway I got from this is to not focus on a bunch of big ideas hoping that one is going to hit it big and it will make you happy. The best thing is to design in your mind what a future happiness looks like, and then every decision you make will be working towards that. That is where his drive comes from. Everything he does is building towards his future that he has visualized for himself in his mind.
when u summarize it, the vibe makes sense. sometimes people need the cliffnotes version, i guess. i love how he talks about removing "friction" from ur life. absolutely necessary!!

The trick is to just choose to be happy first. Instead of looking for something outside of yourself to make you happy. Then you attract what you want.

Neil Blender. Coffee break board. Beautiful. Broke one in half back in the day. My dad threw it out. Dad passed 20yrs ago, God bless him. Gotta say I'm still pissed about that.

My mom passed a week ago. A mid western mom, didn't like skateboarding too much, but for whatever reason, loved ridiculousness. I bet she would have loved this episode. Rob's probably one of the best negotiating skateboarders ever. What an amazing life, what an amazing set of deals he set up for himself.

I love the shoutout to Dayton. I remember checking on the progress of his park in Kettering every day after work. Almost broke my ankle opening day crooked grinding the 7stair. Saw Chaz Kickflip the 12 when he was like 8. Met Haslam there once too. Rob man you did a lot for Ohio kids. Thank you.

Rob, this is one of the entrepreneurial insights that I personally can take in without judging the entrepreneur as a douche who I can't relate to. At 44 years old, I'm just getting back into skating. I can barely Ollie. But I'm also an "entrepreneur" myself. At a tiny tiny level. This has encouraged me to start to look at my daily schedule. This has inspired me to look at what I can learn to do with what I know. This interview has taught me to take a new look at my daily life. Lethal one could say this is... inspiring??

Everybody needs to hear Rob’s account of Nyjah and his mom coming to the first SLS too poor to buy a hotel room. People act like he’s been privileged his whole life when the reality is the opposite. It’s a big reason why he appears so mature today because I doubt he even finished middle school. Him excelling is what made him wealthy, it was all hard work from him. And it’s sick that Rob was passionate enough to deliver a contest with a decent money purse.
I remember starting out skating at a parking lot for a store called Hills and Rob , Neil Blender , Mitch and Mike and more , I never would have thought a sec some you guys would be where you are rn , keep up the awesome work .

I started skating in ‘03 and The DC Video was the first skate dvd I saw/owned. Integral part of my childhood for sure, literally watched it every day after school that whole year
I like this interview . Finally we get to see the real Rob. Hearing his honestly shows how much he's ground passed the Superstar Hollywood status he proclaimed for so many years.. I see now deep down he was always just a Skateboarder. This changed my view on him for sure. Now I respect him more. And Thanks The Nine Club for giving us and them the opportunity to reflex . 👊

I lived near Rob for about a year skating many moons ago. Everything he says is true. The dice games in the shoe boxes at the apartment and the rest. Rob was always keyed up and a funny dude. Glad he made it. Actually ran into him about 20 years later randomly when he pulled up in front of a building iI worked at In Santa Monica n a Ferarri years later. Caught up for a sec and he was the exact same guy. From the grom skater in the PB apartment to massive success and the rest. Exact same guy. Love it

This Nyjah story is legendary because everybody who doesn’t know this story thinks Nyjah is privileged as fuck but he and his family were on the run and broke as hell before winning street league.
He had his own personal skatepark and free boards from his dad when he was a sperm cell. That’s privileged as it gets in the skate world
