i’m so glad this came onto my feed. i recently got to play this again and actually finish it because i was 9 when this came out and i couldn’t finish it since it was too complicated for me. it’s so refreshing to see one of my favorite characters and their summons.
I remember loving this game when it first came out, but I hadn't played a lot of non-linear games at the time, except maybe Kingdom Hearts. Now that I've played a few other FF games (XV and FF7 Remake), I'm able to understand all the comments about it being linear. I bought it on Steam going on about five years ago and have barely played it because I quickly get bored. Oh. And they went the terrible route of dumping 70% of the story in the data logs that you have to read. So, instead of playing the game and experiencing the story, you have to supplement a lot of the events and history with reading up on it. Kingdom Hearts recapped things in writing with their own files you could read in-game, but most of it, you experienced first-hand by playing. And all of this is coming from someone who used to be a bookworm, so I can at least still appreciate reading things. But XIII just is a bit...much, lol. And I absolutely hate update notifications blinking on stuff so I'm always having to fake read the logs just to clear them (same for all the enemy encounters, those too cause a notification signal). Not played the other games in the franchise, but please tell me the story-telling became more show than tell in the other games 😅
That "70%-story is just in the datalog" is such a gross exaggeration. The main plot points are all there in the cutscenes. The datalog is 50% pure recapping in words and 50% explaining lore and background info on events and characters in more detail because if the characters gave overly long expositions on the world and certain terms that would then be seen as overly forced and unnatural. And so many people complain about a lack of diversity in gameplay with the game being so linear and only fight after fight and a bit of costumization in-between, so I thought a little bit of reading every now and then - nicely spaced out - would have been a welcome change of pace. Apparently not.
The Moment when you realize that this game is, from 2009 and graphics, battlesystem and almost everything ist tousand times better than the Bullshit from FF15 wich came 8 Years after this.
Fits perfectly. Odin horse Slepnir is pretty famous, having Odin become the horse is pretty interesting. Lightning herself gives off huge Valkyrie vibes so they fit together well. They even make her a full on actual valkyrie in the sequel. I think Odin fits here.

yes. maybe the engine is outdated but at least the content and the feel of jrpg is there.

The summons in this game were a bit useless. 😂 although the animations for them was great.
Useless? They were nothing more than a way to drag out the battle for an extra few minutes
