You are such an amazing teacher! I feel comfortable with you, as it you’re my own personal “mentor”! Does anyone else feel the same way?
I appreciate that!!
Sometimes i sketch out the image, but paint the background first, then detail the main subject. Then the pressure of ruining hours of work is gone
Oh that’s an amazing idea!
I should try this!
If I’ve ever got a great painting started but need a background sometimes I just diffuse the colours used in the painting with a wet brush and then go back after it is dry an ad in any details I need to the forground once again it’s way easier and looks really nice
I was taught the same thing. Sketch, erase so the lines aren't so obvious, then paint a light background.
I'm terrible at doing backgrounds, so I need to try this. ❤
I haven't painted in a LONG time because I got into a fountain pen ink sketch sort of kick for the last year, but I just want to let you know that I'm appreciating your joy in painting and getting something onto paper regardless of the feeling of messing up or ruining a piece. Sometimes pushing through the hiccups is exactly where the best art blooms and springs up from!
All of this YES!
Hey I love Kristys dialogue… she is sounding like my inner voice…but she’s so positive I just love hearing her!
😘😘😘
I think I really like the second one. I like that juxtaposition between the soft, pastel colors and that stark black ink.
I feel like I get so much from your instruction. You are a natural teacher.
Thank you!
Love all three ideas for backgrounds but especially the ink in the middle.
Thanks so much!
I was most drawn to the center frame. I love the boldness and the contrast of it. Kind of liked it a little before you added all the smaller detail, a mix of the before and after of that frame would have been the right touch for me. Really a lovely piece.
Love your feedback!
I love the center one. Very dramatic!
Thanks!
I bought some of your brushes, the dagger and the cat tongue. Life changing. I have a truckload of water colours that I never use. Your videos inspire me and I've been playing around without fear. It's been so stress relieving.
So glad to hear!
I LOVE this. I've never seen anything like it. I like the first one the best, but I love them all.
Me too still loving the first one :)
They are all so unique but I love #2! Plan to try them all! Thank you so much for your videos!!!
You’re welcome!
🤗 I can just hug you. You have such an awesome bubbly personality. Love all your tutorials and look forward to learning something new. This vid is awesome!! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
Team replay. I like the one in the middle. I think because when look at it it so bold and rich. Love the intense pop.
OMG, Kristy, you are so good at explaining what and how you’re doing things. Really appreciate you’re adding appropriate videos in the description too. Awesome!!!!!
Well thanks! Glad it’s helpful!
Pencil shading is my favorite too. Great lesson thanks again!
Yay thanks!
I like these boldness of the middle one❤️
Thanks!
I like the first one! It has a forefront. The middle one a bit of an argument going on (in my eyes) for that position and the third one the flower just manages to be at the forefront! Love this tutorial! Thank you and appreciated! OK I commented too soon ...going in with the black on the 2nd brought the flower to the forefront!
Hahahah thanks!
Such a clever piece. Thank you.
Yes, the first one is really pretty! But I love the center background and think it might benefit from even a little more of the ink in the left lower quadrant! I love the idea of the three paintings together as one piece. Thank you for all of the great ideas! This tutorial is full of them!
Yes! Thank you!
I think…I might love them all❣️
Thank you!
Thanks so much for all the work you put into these videos. Just loving them. 👍👍💝
Glad you like them!
Composition thoughts teach me a lot. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
I agree, the first one is awesome. I like them all, that last one is really interesting. Never considered using the liner brush in that way. Thank you Kristy...
You are so welcome!
I like the 3rd picture
Thank you!
Very interesting! Number 2 is my choice. Thanks for sharing your genius with us!!!
Thanks for watching!
Your nails are gorgeous!
Thanks!
Thank you for addressing this! I hate backgrounds! It can either make or break your piece and for me, it makes me nervous since you spend so much time working on everything else that you just don’t want to ruin it.
Yes exactly!!! XO
Hi Kristy.. I have two nope three comments. 1. Thank you for using the palette which I bought and still haven’t used. Now I may get into it. 2. I am just learning how to paint and so do not know of this ‘ink’. And thinking this might need a course on its own. Need painting lessons and now ink lessons.and 3. I too read all the comments. So I can see how our little painter group is thinking. Weither or not we think alike. Thank you so much for teaching a great tutorial.
Thanks for sharing!!
Great experience watching this!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The three line drawings brought Joy in to my life, each one was filled with learning! I’d like to say number 3 was my favorite, but parts of one and two we’re amazing! You tease my brain and n my ale me a better painter! Thanks, Karen Dirmis
I tease your brain!! Love it!!
Love the shading with the pencil❤
Thank you! 😊💗I like them all. But, I'm getting some interest in the second one this time.
😘😘😘
You ALWAYS give new ideas 😘
I try!
Love this Kirsty l like the third one best.
Thanks!
I prefer the second one
Thanks!
This is a really good tutorial and I learned a lot. I LOVE the use of ink and water on the paper! I do alcohol inks too and that is what I love about them…the swirling and blending of the colors! I found the second background mesmerizing.
Awww thanks!
Fascinating exercise! Thanks for the ideas. I struggle with backgrounds...BTW I think the resulting triptych is very effective.
Thank you!!
Very good, relaxing and looks so easy,
Thank you!
Ohh wow I got to disagree with you Kristy, I really enjoyed the second middle background the best, and that is a wonderful surprise for me. I have never seen or used ink or Bleedproof White for a background. I learned a lot of new techniques about backgrounds watching this. Thanks for sharing this wonderful information with us. 💕😃
You’re welcome!!
I cannot pick a fave! All so interesting and diverse! Crazy fun, Kristy!
Yaya thanks!
Thank you Kristy!
You’re welcome!
I love them all, but I’m fascinated by the middle panel. I am so trying this!
Awesome!
This is an interesting video. I love your style. You’re helping me learn water color. Thank you
Wonderful!!
The ideas! Love it!
Yay! Thank you!
I like the center one the best
Thanks!
Very creative, as usual!
Thank you! Cheers!
Love this exercise. My favorite is the middle primarily with ink as the background. My second was the one to the right also because of the use of ink and then finally the one to the left I felt like the pencil dulled the overall image too much distracting from the brightness of the flowers whereas the ink causes the brightness to pop. Thank you for giving us such great options and food for thought.
My pleasure :)
I like the middle background best, though I might experiment with the pencil one.
Experiment away!
Flowers are my favorites this will be so much fun thanks so much.
You bet!!
You are such a wonderful teacher - thank you! I can't choose - all three have their own unique beauty. But, #1 & #3 introduced ideas I hadn't thought of before. Your style is so modern and chic.
Wow thank you!!
Thank you! I would never have thought of using pencil. I really liked it. I’m getting ready to take a pencil sketching class. I love using my colored pencils and the waxy feeling blender. Black Ink, oh, my, I have permanent white so that I can use it for cat and dog whiskers on my glass mosaics. Hadn’t even thought of it as a hi-light I could use. You’re just a fabulous eye opener.
Glad to be an eye opener!
Love the pencil. Thanks!
Youuuu bet!
This was a lot of fun 🤩 I’ve done it twice now and learned a lot both times.
Yay!
Lovely!
Thanks!!
Patty-I like the 3rd and 2nd panels.
Love the pencil background, i will try that tomorrow ! Merci !
Wahoo!
Very cool! Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
I like #3!
Thanks!
This is awesome! Thanks for sharing : )
Of course!
Very helpful! Thanks a lot!
You bet!
New to your channel... really enjoy your instruction style. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
Thank you so much!
That was a cool video! Thank you 😊
My fav is the third background,I think it is so creative and doable ❤️
You read my mind! I needed this information! Thanks for another extremely helpful video 🙂
Aw thanks!
What a great idea as I love use pencils Thanks Great dem
You bet!
I like the pencil. I never thought of using pencil for a background. Definitely will give it a try.
As a trio it looks really pretty. Adding those details really worked well.
Thank you for this intriguing tutorial.
I love pencil as a background for watercolor. Nice contrast :) Thanks!
I would love to do this as a vertical triptych. Very fun technique😃
Go for it!
Hard choice but I like the middle one have to get me some ink.
Oh yes INK is ssoooo fun!
I do so enjoy your lessons! I’m. Old and very new at painting, but in spite of being affected by a stroke, having macular degeneration (20/400 and 20/200), having a bulging disc and rotator cuff tears, shedded Achilles’ tendon, and several other problems, I am using your lessons for exercise and practice!
I can’t always tell colors and one two. The page… but I’m loving trying to create! I don’t know where my brush or pen
I want to check out you Pantheon membership, but I can’t find how to locate it!
Please help❣️
Hi Kristy! I think I like the first background best, but I do like the others too because they all add different vibes. I would use any of the three, so thanks for the great ideas! I do like to add backgrounds to my paintings. Sometimes a lackluster painting can be greatly improved with a background... in my opinion. (maybe it becomes a distraction from the not-so-great work?)
I totally agree! Distraction maybe or a great way to refine and sharpen the painting's focus!
I love that you used a dagger brush. I just bought a cat's tongue brush which is supposed to be for painting florals. Have you used one, or have a video on it?
Here's a video on it! czcams.com/video/1SEljcgooYk/video.html
Recently found your page and so glad I did. They’re all pretty. Love all the variations but I prefer the middle one. Never heard about bleed proof white. How is it used
I like the second one the best…. But would like you to use black with color bleeds… and maybe some whites. I have such problems with making a background that I like- everything gets too dark!
Do you think a black Marabu’s Graphix Aqua Ink would work instead of the India ink? If I remember right they are dye based and are water soluble. Love the different backgrounds. Leaning towards the more dramatic #2. 🥰
What do you use for the thin liner brush?
Thanks
It’s part of my own brush collection available on Amazon :) Link in video description
Off topic question…. Have you ever painted over a print? I have 2 old floral prints that I picked up at a thrift store because I though it would be cool to maybe paint over them. Not to cover them up but to enhance them? Make them more “fun”. I’m afraid to try. It’s not like I spent a lot on them ($1.50 each ) but I like them and am afraid of ruining them 🙄 I’m a total amateur.
Yes I have my own! But I love this painting over a vintage print idea! Just do it, they were cheap, go for it!
@@KristyRice maybe a video idea to give me some courage…..😉😉😉
Kristy, is the ink hard on your brushes?
Nope!
Kristy which blue have you used for the leaves please
It’s the blue from my art for joys sake palette :)
Is this ink SUPER dark black when applied straight from the bottle? I bought a black ink a long time ago and can’t remember what kind it was and it was extremely dark black and almost had a shiny reflection in the light if it was laid on too think and I absolutely loved it! I just can’t remember if it was this one or not.
Also, this might look awesome too, as you mentioned, with water soluble graphite….which I just discovered a few weeks ago!
I like the more dramatic and contrasting middle one
This one is super dark out of the bottle yes and when dry it has a sheen (when applied in masstone).
@@KristyRice thanks! Then this is probably the same ink I used before! I will have to get more and try this!
What size is the papee?
Where can I purchase a liner brush?
Well I have one on my set and most manufacturers have a version to offer. I do prefer synthetic for more control :)
