I've got a German Shepard (almost 2yrs), and I am almost in this *exact* situation right now, with trying to get her to be chill around other dogs (plus not being over-protective) and *getting used to the gentle lead*
I'm weirdly so glad to see that another dog acts this crazy in precisely the same way as her, because she's also super stubborn (and I'm very impatient😅), so it's actually really encouraging to see you work through it a bit 👍

He is 100% boxer for sure - I used to walk 4 of them off-leash every day - it was quite the thing! Fyi, an EZ walk harness does not work with boxers because they bounce everywhere so you might ne able to stop them from going forward but they'll just bounce and pull sideways and backwards - I know from experience

When I saw that somersault I just thought wow, definitely a Boxer lol I’ve had 4 over the years. My favorite breed. But they can be very bull headed and you need to be a strong leader to have them.

Dude boxers are like Mastiff/ bulldog/ kangaroo on Red Bull but all party animal super happy-go-lucky most of the time but they are wound for sound and you can' see the bulldog breed and the strength and energy in this dude
Such a fun breed but when trained right they are breathtaking
We gave our dog a very slow introduction to the gentle leader.
We held it in front of him and hand fed him through it, all his food through the GL hanging from our other hand.
Then week two we flopped the GL over his neck and fed him by hand. By week three he was asking for the gentle leader so he could be fed, then we buckled it up.
Our dog was a very insecure rescue dog, easily spooked.
It's very important they are conditioned to love wearing the GL or it can end up in a spiralling pattern of aversion to it.
We had another dog that would go into an alligator "death roll" and spend ages figuring out how to remove it. This spoiled it's relationship with both the lead and the GL.
Joel seems to be able to dominate a dog into submission, he is incentivised to do this because of his need to address things immediately.
If you are a smaller woman or frail and you have a bigger breed than this boxer you might consider taking things more slowly so you shape rather than overpower your dog's desires.
The thing is that Joel did mention the better way to introduce the halter like you said with using treats overtime BUT this is probably a one hour session and these clients need to nip this behavior in the but sooner than later. He’s also still using treats when hank gives up the fight so there is no aversion that he’s gonna have to it. Especially because as Joel mentioned this is a very happy go lucky dog, and clear from his body language so a head halter is not gonna make him insecure, he needs that little bit of struggle. The rest of his life is just fine. A fearful dog of course would be a different approach but he’s a different case. He’s a dog that you just have to get right to it. It’s leadership and clear communication not dominance.

So helpful! My shar pei is a bounder and loves to just leap onto other dogs (all fours leaving the ground). Having fun but the other dogs do not like another dog pouncing on them. Going to try this.

Hi Joel, when I trained my dog to put a Halti Head Collar on, I held a treat at a position where she had to put her nose into the Halti to get it. Luckily she is very food motivated. I only had to use a treat a couple of times before i had no trouble putting the headcollar on whatsoever. That's probably because after i put on the Halti, we go for a walk. So she associates the headcollar with going for a walk now. She likes going for walks even more than food. I trained her to walk on a lead originally with a check chain and she learnt well and reasonably quickly. However, if she hadn't been walked for a few days, then she would be so eager to go for a walk that she would pull a bit for the first 500m before resuming good walking on a lead. i got sick of giving constant lead corrections in the first 500m of walks that I bought the Halti and it worked very well, very quickly and made walking a pleasure from the get go. I only have to give her a very occasional flick on the lead now in the first 500m to remind her to walk nicely. My dog is relatively well behaved with me apart from that issue.

You are so right and have obvious compassion. My dog needs help. Our behaviorist tried the gentle leader and it really didn’t work out well. I’ve stuck with the keeper collar (prong collar).
At the pet hotel they use slip leads and he doesn’t like those. He had problems and lunged at another dog then they corrected him and he bit the pet hotel handler . Not too serious a bite
Is it because they used the slip lead?
It was a compact space during a busy holiday weekend with lots of dogs
I have a 2 yr old boxer we started corrections from a young age and down stay now he down stays anytime a dog approaches gotta start them young

At first I thought "A Dog that Fights Everything" was a very unfair label for Hank. This is a Boxer dog , albeit undisciplined, doing Boxer dog things. This isn't some monster. But as Joel points out Hank is basically a wild horse that in a way needed to be "broken."

OMG I feel exactly the same thing! "I'm gonna smell other dogs, Im gonna pull my mom."this is the aggressive version of my dog, who syrughles so hard on gentle leader. He just wanna do whatever he wants to do.

Boxers, what can I say, super high energy and can definitely be a bit crazy. They absolutely need exercise and discipline. The good thing is that they are usually super sweet and friendly. Unfortunately, I know for a fact that many of them end up in abusive situations and I can only guess its because of their very hyperactive personalities.
They may be "sweet" but they have no idea of their own strength and can easily pull a smaller person down.
boxers are notoriously nuts.
I have never heard of or seen an aggressive boxer and I have been around at least 8-10 of them.
I've had a lot of Boxers through my life, a couple have been very dog aggressive, I've never seen a human-aggressive Boxer.
There is only one boxer in my neighborhood. He is the only dog that my dog enjoys fighting with. Actuallu he taught my dog how to fight...

Took Joel's advice on the Gentle Leader (aka Haltie/Head Harness) and was definitely the gamechanger with my 2 Rednose Pitbull street rescues (84 & 78 pounds). Watch a lot of different vids of Joel's on loose leash walking--this conditioning was unusually difficult. Takes a while to get the hang of both the Gentle Leader and the Loose Leash method so just keep trying and just watch at least one vid a day--I can avow it'll be lifechanging. ❤️🐾

this dog was in stress the whole time, while we are trying to make him do something he clearly doesnt want to. we are forcing them. we are taking his free will to do something by forcing him to do what we want.
imagine someone would do this do you, because he cant figure out how to talk to you. its insane.
then there is the opposite, positiv reinforcement... no one doing this is interested in communication either. taking advantage of dogs survival instinct, communicating zero.
both sides starting a war against each other... is that the best for dogs?! learn their language, study it, learn how to tell them things by communicating. we have the brain and everything we need to study them. how the hell can science and research come to the conclusion positive reinforcement is the way to go? its ridiculous.
they should study and research dogs in nature... but most of them study already conditioned dogs who are already adapted to the human world and all the things we bring into the dog world from it.

@@abshakamalu hmmm I was just comparing the tools… The training process and methodologies are a different topic and many trainers have different opinions about their ways of training.
You as an experienced trainer should adjust your training according to the dog.
There is no one good way to train that’s is why a good trainer is always an intelligent person with balanced trainer approach.
A experieced Trainer might chose the right time for using a Prong or e-collar , i think its just way overused and Overkill most of the time .

Think about it... isnt every method, every way of training, no matter if its methods, if its positive reinforment, if its balanced training, the reason to use that kind of training, all kinds of training, is caused by the lack of understanding dogs. because in the end, its still force.
the only way to let the dog do what we want in a free will, is by communicating with him.
but people dont want that cause it will take a longer time and people dont have the time for it or dont want to do it cause they are lazy. they want dog trainers to fix the problem.
i mean, would we be okay if we treat humans that way? only because we dont understand that human?
giving a child treats everytime it did good? or forcing a child? we dont do that because we can communicate with the kid.

research and science must focus on that. thats what im criticising. people dont know, so i cant blame them, dog trainers could know that, but they waste their time with their methods and learning more about their methods, instead of learning dog.
if science would go in the communication direction, trainers would adept to it (like positive reinforcement did, its based on science).
there is one more problem and thats the owners. most of them just want a dog cause their lonely, or they wanna start a family and wanna know if they are ready so they start with a dog, or they want a best friend to cuddle with etc. and if there are problems, they want it fixed fast. they dont have the time, or are to lazy... but we have our dogs 12 years or more. its family, we are in a relationship with the dog. so make time and learn it the right way.
no time and lazyness is the reason why dog training is what it is today. it has to be a fast and easy to fix. thats what people want. they dont care what the dog is telling you, cause the dog has to be what we want him to be.

Gentle leader or slip lead at 16 weeks instead of two years would have made such a difference to the dog and the owners experience, and saved them all the hassle of rehabilitation for that basic on leash obedience and bonding/leadership.
The problem with a halti on a boxer is with the short nose. I had one boxer that became nervous of other dogs and people at night while being walked on the halti and we figured out that it was the strap around the nose that was limiting his vision because of its thickness. A gentle leader might be better because it's thinner material.
I think he must be the only dude on the planet who doesn’t know NOT to use leash pops with a head halter. It is reckless.
@@marylang4540 I am not a fan of the halti myself because, with dogs that have long necks or who are tall, it can cause nerve damage if used incorrectly.

How about trying a prone collar? Maybe for this particular dog, the prong collar would communicate more precisely/effectively or be better tolerated than the gentle leader.

The Gentle Leader does the Same Thing , correcting exactly in the Moment of jumping Forward and he will get used to It fast enough .
Prong was only thing that worked with y Amstaff.
Joel doesn't use prone or e collar, because lots of countries or places ban them outright. He is not against them totally, he prefers head halter.

hey Joel! my unspayed olde tyme bulldog growls, lunges, jumps, barks whenever she sees any dog, I've tried clicker, positive re-enforcement and corrections but nothing seems to work. I was wondering, apart from body language, how can you tell why a dog reacts (fear, protecting, aggression etc) because she sniffs dogs through a fence but when there's no fence she is just a bull, she has never bitten but she snaps and chomps the air when its too close
boxers are so manic, I feel like even if you were to do the nice long treat way method for conditioning the halti he would still be dramatic lol

My female akita pulls like a freight same as this guy, i use a head halti abd she still pulls like shit not as bad but still tries to fight the halti 😂

So question. If in a situation where a dog fight between two big males is likely to happen, is it better to have a gentle leader or a prong collar? I know your opinion on progs Mr Joel, and I share it, but I'm concerned about my dog's ability to protect himself with a gentle leader on his face. Any thoughts?

I have been cornered multiple times on walks by another giant male who wants to fight my dog. We live in the same neighborhood, and there is no avoiding this contact. My dog doesn't want to fight, but he will to protect me.
My husband thinks head halters are cruel. How do I explain to him that it doesn’t pull on the dogs head and it doesn’t hurt them?

Dogs are pretty F'n tough. I mean don't put a head halter on a 75' flexy leash let them get to full speed and then try and hold your ground. That'd be cruel.itd be like face masking in football at that point. The idea here is use what you need, use it in a safe and logical manner. Eventually, hopefully learned helplessness will kick in and you won't need it. It's a means to an end to get the dog under control so you can get thru things like walking and teach behaviors while on the walk. Slowly transitioning out of using it would be the end goal. Depends on the dog and a lot on the human.
Definitely don't show him this video.
You can explain that with the head halter, we walk with a short leash so that the dog doesn't have the opportunity to get much in front or lunge. If we don't give them that opportunity, then there's no risk. You can explain that we never correct a dog or use negative reinforcement with the head halter cause that's dangerous. You can also explain that any collar (even a flat collar) can potentially be dangerous if used wrongly.
My boxer/English Bulldog is wild impulsive like this guy. Sweet, funny and fun. But charges at dogs and pulls terribly. No access to a trainer like you. Sure appreciate your methods.

I’ve always suspected my pit mix had some boxer in her. She moves and behaves like all the boxers I work with. Hank is exactly like my dog. I’m positive she’s a boxer mix after watching this.

When you put something on a dog like pressure and it is one weather they do what You want or don't. You have now started the process of losing trust with your dog.
have you ever seen how dogs correct each other? have you seen mom dogs correct their pups? you clearly haven't if you think correcting is gonna make your dog not trust you.
Adversity is good for dogs? No, it's the same with the tools you use,it shows that you are a bad trainer. The useless tools are also a good income for the ' trainer'.
Why mention a prong collar? Isnt that desperate and amateur?
