"A Hacker's Story" featuring ex-Anonymous and LulzSec hacker, Jake Davis

- "A Hacker's Story" explores how an informal or "casual" group of mainly young people - who has a vision but no contract - assemble and act on it to hack global organisations. What triggers them to carry out a hack or share confidential intel? In other words, why do hackers work, and what role could or should they play in our world? What risks do they pose to our security - are they an asset or a threat? How can young people be better informed on the realities of hacking and the wider implications?
"A Hacker's Story" focuses on the experiences and insights from three different people, each with a unique perspective on illegal hacking:
Jake Davis was once dubbed the “most-wanted cyber-criminals on the planet”. Previously a member of hacker collective Anonymous, he later formed LulzSec, where he and his collaborative targeted sites such as The Sun, X-Factor, Sony, and the CIA. Eventually arrested in a joint FBI-Scotland Yard investigation, Jake explains his motivations, and his view on the wider, real world of hacking. Today he’s a writer, speaker and global consultant on security, internet culture and privacy.
Professor Ruth Blakeley is co-director of The Rendition Project which provides the most comprehensive analysis to date of the CIA’s Rendition, Detention and Interrogation programme. As Professor of Politics and International Relations at Sheffield University, she explains the impact and role of whistleblowers and hacking on global security… and human rights.
Richard Jones is Manager of the Prevent operational team at the National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU), in the UK's National Crime Agency. He and his team focus on stopping people from becoming involved in cyber crime, or from re-offending. Stressing the rule of the law, Richard highlights the need for greater collaboration and communication between young hackers and the work of the NCCU.

He couldve at least tried to justify the law, even once. It feels a little dystopian that its just "the law, the law, youre breaking the law".
Fast forward to now and Julian Assange is in prison for exposing the governments crimes.
All the comments above mine complaining about the breaking of the law should ask themselves, what if it's the law that protects the biggest most dangerous criminals of them all?

the law means little. there've been many laws throughout history that were horrible. Fear the law, but find ways around it.
Appreciate that the documentary producers looked at the productive side of hacking, as well as the risks.

@@thinknation7199 His arrests, in and of itself, doesnt attest to anything, Brown and Weev were both convicted. One for doing basic arithmetic on a publicly facing webpage; the other for sharing a link. That is some bootlicking logic there.
Topiary has definitely done some actual hacking as well. There was a security firm called HB-Garrett or something like that which he was directly involved in
I'd like to go into Cyber security as a pen tester, but the problem is college and having a degree in computer science for it, I just can't get the degree, Money and Grades are a problem. So as he said at the end "I'd be a good career path" only when you have the resources to do it. And I find myself fairly skilled in the subject.

How do you enumerate, scan for vulnerabilities, how do you use those vulns to gain privs. How do you expand your attack surface. I know these answers. But do you know the arguments that you need to use in order to archieve these goals in order to build a map.
Takes a ton of practice. We in the cyber security industry label this phase as ‘developing your methodology’. The more pentests you’re gonna do the more you’ll understand and one day you’ll be able to answer your own questions maybe
