    Love this quilt! The colors are so soft. I’m so glad to see others repairing vintage quilts. Sometimes people will tell me that it loses its value (this I know), but I believe that quilts are made to be used and enjoyed. Currently, I’m repairing two quilts, one from the ‘30’s and the other from the late 1800’s. I collect vintage and antique fabrics to use and I’m very happy with the results so far. Enjoying your channel and the opportunity to see so many vintage quilts and the various patterns:-)

    I have two thoughts on the “missing halves” of the blocks. My Grandma used to make quilts in pairs, two for my two brothers, and two for my sister and me. So maybe the twin quilt ended up in a different auction, or stayed in the home of a family member. And my other thought was, maybe she made this together with another quilter. They collaborated and swapped blocks, so some of the halves are in her friend’s quilt. I could think of even more stories, but this is an intriguing quilt! Thank you as always for this fascinating series.

    Hi! The name of the pattern is King's Crown. It's in the book101 Patchwork Patterns by Ruby McKim. According to the pattern, it wasn't 9 patch blocks cut in half. There are little triangle pattern pieces given. My book is copyrighted 1962 and is a revised version of the work originally published by McKim Studios in 1931. I also have a quilt from this same pattern made by my great great grandmother. It's a lovely old pattern. Thanks so much for your video. This series is very interesting and it's fun seeing all these old quilts.

      So I thought it was Kings Crown, too, but it is made a bit differently. However, that’s not to say there isn’t a variation or even the original out there somewhere. When I was researching for this quilt, I looked at a ton of patterns but none used the entire block and then cut it, that that is how this was made because the patterns between the matching blocks match up (with the seam allowance taken into consideration, of course). I am wondering if the maker found a short cut? Either that or the name of the block is different in different areas. I’m not sure. Thank you so much for this information! I really appreciate it. The more you know, right?

      @@SewtheDistance Could be. It would certainly be a lot easier to cut a 9 patch in half than tracing/cutting around a tiny little triangular template! However way they did it, it sure makes a beautiful quilt.

      @@janicec1196 Amen to that! This pattern and the signature quilt block were two of the more baffling designs I’ve seen. Since I replied, I did a bit more research and maybe it is a King’s Crown variation. It looks like this name refers to many different blocks.

    I love this quilt. I am sketching it into my quilt journal that I keep for future ideas. My journal is 3-hole punched graph paper.

      Love that! It is a very unique design, isn't it? Love the idea of a journal for ideas.

    That's a nice quilt. I always like patterns done on the point. As you were speaking about the various types of fabrics used in this quilt I started to wonder when exactly it was that there was a designated cotton fabric, called quilting fabric, that came into being. Originally the pioneers had to use or swap whatever fabrics they had. How did that all evolve? Loved this.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  Před 2 lety

      Great questions! Maybe since cottons were the original fabrics? At least I think they were, right, since they are natural fibers? I will have to research this more!

    ‘Tis a mystery. I would like to think that the seamstress was a rebel, who dared to push the boundaries of quilting rules. You go girl!

    I can’t figure out how they didn’t lose their points when they cut the block in half and sewed the 1/4” seam!
    Great quilt! It’s always fun to see quilts from someone who did their own thing!

      @SewtheDistance  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you! Since they are squares, you wouldn't notice the missing points as much when they are cut on the diagonal. The beauty of HSTs! LOL!

    Many quilts of that time were made to be used. The person had not heard of the QUILT POLICE. I make utility quilts and mostly had quilt BIG STYLE with size 12wt thread or perked cotton. That quilt looked like many my grandmother or aunts made in Eastern Kentucky.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  Před 2 lety +2

      Yes! Absolutely! There still shouldn’t be the quilting police, in my opinion. We get so hung up on the rules. I say throw those rules out the window and have some fun. Do you have haps in Eastern Kentucky? I just love that style of quilting. I have a few other videos that feature hap quilts. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! ❤️

    Love the Lessons from an Old Quilt videos. Is this quilt twin sized? Maybe this quilt had a "twin" and the other half of the Nine-patch blocks are in another quilt. Keep making these videos.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  Před 2 lety +1

      Ohhhh! Maybe! It is a small twin size, so there could be a matching quilt out there somewhere! My friend bought it at a home auction. You’d think they would have been together, but maybe they were separated at some point. Thank you for your kind words! I will keep making these video. They have taught me so much about the craft. I look forward to learning more and sharing them here on CZcams!
