    It's so refreshing to hear that a company cares about customer service and not the bottom line. It's definitely a rarity but goes to show companies like Victorinox are the diamonds in the ruff.

      This is definitely all to do with their bottom line. The difference is they're taking a very long-term view. This is an investment. No brand ambassador is quite as effective as a customer who is 1000% happy with every part of their service.
      These guys are clearly old school. They KNOW that going above and beyond for one customer begets more.

      Ahem. It is American companies that are the worst when it comes to customer service. Thanks to the leeches of Wall Street and a corrupt congress. It's what we used to be like before Wall Streets investors got priority over everything else. Wealth without work is a pox on the US.

      I totally agree and I see build quality, a company’s reputation and motivation, and their customer service record all important factors to consider when making many purchases. But in this age of planned obsolescence and disposable consumerism, I know I’m in the minority. Too many folks were never taught or have never realized that spending more on a quality product or tool from a good company that cares about its customers will not only be cheaper than buying and replacing inferior products, but it often out performs the cheaper item.

    I have had a Swiss Champion since the mid-80s. The awl chipped, the flat head screwdriver chipped, and the Scissors came loose. After your video I sent it back for repairs. It came back to me in a bag like yours did, but they replaced it with a new Champion! I thought that model had been discontinued! I am more than happy. I have 4 SAKs now. I've lost 3 others. This kind of service is why I keep coming back, and me losing them is why I now put a lanyard on them!

    Leatherman is another great "Stand Behind Our Product" company.
    I bought a Leatherman Sidekick for $10 at a garage sale and carried it for a couple years.
    The anti-rotation tab of the pocket clip broke at some point, so I requested their warranty repair service.
    I mailed it in and they not only replaced the pocket clip, but also cleaned and sharpened everything.
    All it cost was the $4 or so to ship it.

    Just watched this video. I had a nearly identical experience. Before we got married (over 25 years ago) my wife had bought me a Victorinox Cyber Tool. I used it extensively for the next 15 years to the point that one the scales fell off, I had broken a couple of tips off of the blades and had bent the scissors. Since it was nearly unusable, it sat in a drawer for the last 10 years. I have a few other Victorinox knives around so I wasn't without one. However, earlier this year I thought I would see what it would take to send it it. I was willing to pay just about anything just to have the scale replaced, and the knives fixed. Similar to your story, they asked for $5 and if there is any more cost they would let me know. After a couple of weeks I received mine and they had replaced nearly every tool on it and replaced the scales. It was pretty much a brand new knife for just $5. I love Victorinox. To say "above and beyond" really doesn't even do it justice. Great company!

    The thing about going "low cost", it means they're also inexpensive to replace, so they can afford to do this sort of thing all day long. It probably cost more to have someone take the old one apart than to issue a replacement. Though I would feel kind of sad if it had sentimental value and they just sent back a bag of parts.

    • @SurvivingtheDaily
      @SurvivingtheDaily  Před 2 měsíci +1

      It's quite amazing how refined the process is. That it is so low cost yet quality made. They can sell you a product and in thirty years, replace it. At no or low cost to the consumer.

  • @skovbo65
    @skovbo65 Před 11 měsíci +4

    If you look closely the lose part you got back is the old part they replaced on your knife, the rest of the parts in your "new" knife is the old parts from the knife you send in.

  • @nirfz
    @nirfz Před 8 měsíci +2

    I have a Victorinox i got from my parents in 1989 or 1990 iirc.
    And it has a problem for 15 years now. But i never sent it in for a specific reason, and this video confirms my decision:
    It was the first pocket knife i got at age 9 or 10. And i used it a lot and carried it for many years and it has a very special sentimental value to me.
    It was from a line that is now discontinued: The econo line of back then, which meant a different swiss shield on the scales and no scale tools and no key ring.
    The problem it has is that the corkscrew isn't staying closed anymore. (i played with it for so much, i think that i rounded over the rearend where the spring pushes against it.)
    So my fear was that they would have to replace the scales at least to repair it. And then a lot of the sentimental value would be gone.
    A pile of parts is not the same as the not 100% funcitoning knife.
    ->i chose to buy a new one back then and set the sentimental one aside so it can stay at home "in well earned retirement"

    • @SurvivingtheDaily
      @SurvivingtheDaily  Před 8 měsíci +4

      There is an option to check if the knife is sentimental. I did not check that box. With that said, these knives are inexpensive enough that I would just buy another and leave your original untouched. Like you mentioned. Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts!

      I had an old Explorer that was of great sentimental value. The scissors broke (after 50 years constant use) but I didn't want a new knife as the scratches & faded scales represented years of use. I just told them this when I sent it for repair. They cleaned it & sharpened it & replaced the scissors so it works well again, but they kept the old faded scales & didn't polish out the scratches on the blades. Nor did they replace the old magnifier with the new type. I was absolutely delighted with the result. They charged me about £10 (This is in the UK). Just brilliant service.

    Victorinox customer service was pathetic the only time we used them.
    Not only did they wait a month to even start the work, they sent us a message saying that since the work wasn't started that they were going to return the knife to us and charge us for it.
    Once that BS got straightened out, they did the repair. But then they messed up other parts of the knife (RangerGrip 71 Gardner).
    All they had to do was replace the corkscrew. But then they made the scissors so that they cannot cut.
    They also dulled the knife blade to the point that I could draw it across my hand and not even get a scratch.
    I resharpened the blade on my own. But, the scissors are a total waste.
    This was about 3 years ago.

      Oh good!! I've been slacking on responding to comments and I was worried that I left you hanging. Please let me know your experience with Victorinox.

    They should have sent your knife back untouched in case of sentimental value.

      They did have that option on the form I filled out. I did not check it.

      Oh, that's okay, as long as that's an option. It must be way cheaper for them to just send a new knife. They're cheap anyway!

    Leatherman two times in the last 15 years I sent a knife in to be fixed and he sent me back a brand new surge, I know it’s human nature to never be happy so I was a little annoyed. The first one had the little eyeglass screwdriver. The new one didn’t have it, the second time they sent me another new one, and I was pissed because it took me years for that break in. Maybe I need to take a good look at myself in the mirror ha ha ha ha

      You sent them in to be fixed, not replaced. I can understand your frustration. I wonder what they would do with something that has been long discontinued.

      @@SurvivingtheDaily I don’t know, but I’m sure they’ll do the right thing, if it was given to you as a gift and it was engraved. Maybe they would save that one part I don’t know. But I do know they would do the right thing.

    Unfortunately, as of early 2024, they've become stricter on warranty service. I sent in a knife with broken blades and hard-to-open tools, they wanted $15+tax to repair it. When I asked about the charge, I received this reply: "Our Lifetime warranty covers the original owner with proof of purchase against manufacturing defects. For many years, we repaired and serviced knives under warranty, which in fact did not meet the requirements. Earlier this year, we made the decision to uphold our warranty properly. We are happy to repair our knives as needed so our loyal customers can enjoy them for many years to come. When the damage to the knives is outside of our warranty, we are still happy to complete the necessary repairs, however there is a repair fee: $8 for smaller knives and $15 for larger knives."

      That's a real bummer. Sending in and getting a $30 knife repaired isn't worth it, in my opinion. They may feel the same way.

    I wouldn't be so cheerful. If I send it for cleaning and sharpening, that's what I want. It is cheaper for them to replace it for some models, but if I go trough the warranty hassle, shipping, etc, is probably because I want a restoration on a memory gift, or something inherited from someone dear who passed away... I would be pretty pissed if they destroyed like that.

      There is an option, that I did not check, that states "this item is sentimental." I'm only guessing but if that was in fact checked, they would not have been so destructive.
