Evinrude out board linkage adjustment, The way the manual reads i think I did this right. If i didn't let me know. The motor runs and will Idle, when i get it to the water I will fine tune it. It would not even run when i started. Thanks for watching Om fishing.

I can’t thank you enough for this video and how much it helped me. I just bought a used boat with an old 1990 25Hp Johnson on it. Took it out for the first time. The engine started and idled fine but top speed was about 10mph. I looked at the engine this morning and noticed the carburetor butterfly only opened a 1/4 or less. I was stumped until I came across this video. The small clamp on the wire that opens the butterfly was loose and had slid down and away from the actuator. I watched your video step by step following along with you and wow, just wow, a zillion percent improvement. So please accept my most sincere thanks and my very warmest regards.

This made my boat run so much better than it ever has. I took it to the shop and got it back in perfect idling condition but unable to plane out. I tried this and it fixed it instantly. Can't thank you enough

Just took my 9.9hp handle apart and it was missing one of the rollers I see in the video.Thought I lost it but previous owner had it apart.There goes another $15 for one of those rollers and installing new shift cable since it is binding and a carb kit.Still working on my 20hp.This video is helping me on both motors.thanks

Wow this saved my butt. I've been restoring an '83 35HP Johnson and it was idling super high. Turns out the adjuster was off just as much as yours was. It's exponentially better now.

I just bought a boat and have been tinkering with the 25 evinrude. I found a nut under the motor...was the lock nut for the timing adjustment! I couldnt get the boat to plane when I took it out, bet this is the problem. I enjoy your videos, so thanks! I'll get on the timing next time out.

I had to remove and clean the carb. All it did was crank and run 3-5 sec then die. It purrs like a kitten now. Just to fine tune it when I get to finely put it in the water. Thanks for the help. Keep the videos coming.

The first part I had it in neutral, When you look to see in the carburetor at the butterfly it was in gear.

I bought one of these outboards. Apparently it was hard to start but runs fine. The fuel hose from the primer was missing and the nipple on the carb bowl was blocked with duct tape. I assumed that's where the line from the primer went, saw it in your video. Got to see how you operated the primer too. Appreciate the video. Even tho it wasn't the same topic it helped me out.

Man I have the '86 35hp Johnson and I have had bogging down issues. I have done carb rebuilds, replaced the fuel pump, lines, fittings, spark plugs, etc... I was seriously thinking about selling the motor until I stumbled across your videos. This video and your timing video, thanks you to you the motor is running like a top. You should really consider doing more videos for other motors because you do not give yourself enough credit. If you are not a true mechanic then I do not know who is!

One tip I'll add is that it's easy to sheer the flywheel pin by pulling the pull start before you have the flywheel nut properly torqued. I've found that out the hard way.

I'm a little late to the party, but I've got an '84 Johnson 35hp and am trying to set up the throttle/carb/timing on from scratch. Looks to have the same setup as your 30hp.
The issue I am having is:
IF I set it up so that the cam follower comes off the cam right between the two marks, I bind up the throttle rod when trying to go WOT (nothing stopping the throttle from advancing so I begin putting excess pressure on the throttle rod/carb linkage etc.) The butterfly valve in the carb goes past horizontal
However if I go back and set the throttle rod collar screw so that the carb's butterfly valve is perfectly horizontal when the throttle is at WOT (throttle lever against stop on engine block), the cam follower is not even close to the 2 marks on the cam when it touches down/leaves the cam. It contacts way to the left
Is your throttle lever contacting the stop on the engine block at WOT once you're done adjusting?
At the beginning of the video I see you adjust the relationship between the cam follower and marks on the cam by adjusting the throttle linkage. I have a tiller throttle control with no linkage like that. Just shafts and gears to that point. I don't see a way to make an adjustment other than using the throttle rod set screw that contacts the nylon block on the throttle lever. **Scratch that, I think I am supposed to use the Idle stop screw to make the similar adjustment**

Enjoy your videos.Always a big help.I do have a question on the carb.On top next the Welch plug there are what appear to be a lead bead type plug.Mine is loose on my 20hp and appears maybe the top round part of the drop of solder or lead came off and I removed my idle screw and what is left in that hole moves around,but when I put idle screw back in it tightened up but may not be air tight.Could this cause too much air to get in there if it is not sealed anymore?I am having an issue where the motor starts and it will not increase in rpms right away.Have to let it sit running for a minute till the rpms will throttle up.Any ides?thanks

I have a question regarding the little brass machine screw that tightens down onto the linkage that you adjusted so that the butterfly was wide open after adjusting it. I have a Johnson 28 SPL with remote start. I was fixing up a seized cable from the high throttle lever that is usually in the up position when starting the motor. Well I busted that little brass stop when I went to tighten the screw. My question is when I push the little wire linkage forward to make sure the butterfly is open before I tighten the brass screw, should the high idle starting lever be in the down position or up ? Also should my shifter be in neutral while making this adjustment ?

Hello sir I have a question,I have a 1978 25hp evinrude when I’m adjusting the linkage and timing on the carburetor,I put the motor in forward gear then adjust the timing so when roller hits the timing marks the butterfly starts to open,and that’s it ?-also when starting the motor when in neutral and gas is given is the carb butterfly supposed to be wide open ?
PS- you mentioned that flywheel nut was not very tight during your demonstration...Running the engine this way runs the risk of shearing the flywheel key, which damages the tapers on the crank and flywheel.

good job on the video ...my 25 johnson is bogging out at 3/4 throttle .....its got gas , spark and great compression ...125pds each cyl .....so I`m thinking it might be the linkages as well ....I`ll check it out tomorrow ....thanks

On minute 550 & the screw adjust to the left of the screw driver. That screw is supposed to adjust the timing. How does it work? It's not connected to anything or touching anything. I have the same engine and can't figure that screw works to adjust the timing. Can you please help. Thanks

@Derrick Smiley I prefer to use the marine battery. I just my a group 27 or 29 battery from Walmart. I have never bought one of those marine batteries from bass pro for 300.00 I am sure they are good. 100.00 at Walmart and replace it every two years.

At 5:50 can you tell me how you are adjusting that butterfly rod? Fully closed or open? throttle at full open or closed ? What i mean is, should that butterfly be full open horizontal with the throttle wide open or full stop closed ? mine is way off i think.
Advance the throttle lever until it contacts the stop on the cylinder block. Then Move the throttle control rod forward until the carburetor throttle plate is horizontal. Move the control rod collar backward until it touches the pivot block. Tighten the collar screw securely. The carburetor throttle plate must be exactly horizontal when the throttle lever is fully advanced.

what did you do to fix it at the end. my Johnson 25 has that dead miss in it exactly like yours did.
I just kept adjusting the carb and the engine smoothed out. Read Kramdem's comments below some very good information about that dead miss.
Hi, I have replaced my recoil starter spring on my 30hp, but I can seem to set up the starter lockout cable - the one that prevents you pull starting it in gear. When I put it in neutral the cable doesn't pull the pin. Is there a way to adjust the tension? Maybe I've put it together wrong. Any tips? Thanks
Not sure on that one. I would make sure the cable moves freely. Just check your connections. Stay safe.

Aren't you supposed to have the throttle lever hard up to the stop, when setting the control rod/ horizontal butterfly?
The book only says that the carburetor throttle plate must be exactly horizontal when the throttle lever is fully advanced. I took that as advanced the throttle. After I read that again it says set then check if it is not horizontal repeat steps 1-4. My motor is running great and no problems. I will have to check when setting this part if there is any different if the throttle is at idle or WOT. Thank for watching and commenting Stay Safe.

Great video. I have a question at 2:08. So with the throttle at the lowest speed setting (or stop position), that roller should be lined-up between the two notches?
When you doing linkage adjustments. The book says advance the throttle by moving the throttle control lever until the tip of the amplifier begins to move. At this point the cam follower should contact the cam between the two mark. In this video I didn't use a amplifier {little stick with a clip on the end} I just watched for the butterfly in the carburetor to just start to move.

I did not know what the little knob was for on the end of the tiller handle until I was ordering parts and found out that it's a idle adjustment knob. Can you really adjust the idle by turning this knob?
Yes ,On my motor that knob is a cable adjustment that changes the idle speed. You turn it one way and it will make the cable shorter and turn it the other and it will make the cable longer. Both ways change the idle speed of the engine.
How do you adjust the roller with the two notches, on my motor it’s about 90 degrees off

I have a 55 evinrude and motor does great on muffs soon as I get in water gets to certain rpms will not plane off , take calon off pull throttle in neutral revs fine go back in gear try to tale off just gets to point and holds ??

I would check the linkage to make sure the throttle and timing is set to the correct position. It could be a fuel issue. I would check linkage first if the motor is run good other than that.
my 25 hp Johnson has that same dead miss. how did you finally fix that miss...please.
I adjusted the low speed jet on the side of the carb.
when you adjusted the butterfly valve in the carb, was the throttle wide open ?
When I adjusted the one on the side of the carb it was shut and the one under the flywheel it was wide open.

Do the spark plugs come out dry or wet?
Are they filled with oil?
The best way for me to answer this is it looks like baked on oil and
carbon on spark plugs I take out. The other captains that i know that
run out board engines say don't leave the spark plugs in very long
because the longer you run them, the more gas the engine uses. The more
chance of one failing. So you are better off to change them, the cost of
spark plugs will be off set in gas. I don't know if that is true. They
change theirs so i change mine. I always run the plug the manufacture
recommends.
Where can I find the Factory service manual for this motor? I have the exact same motor as you do.

Question for everyone: At the 2:45 mark of the video, how did Om Fishing make the adjustment so that the cam follower sits between the two mark? I have the service manual but it doesn't mention anything about this step.
What I was doing at the 2:45 was trying to get the throttle to be at the stop on the tiller handle when the cam follower was between the marks. I don't think it matters if they both hit the stops at the same time. Check out my video Evinrude Service Bulletin. At 1:48 might be what you are looking for.

2:49 You adjusted this linkage to move the position of the two marks? In your case did you lengthen or shorten the rod to get the result at 3:18?
I made this look way to hard. Just advance the throttle until the cam follower is between the to marks. Then loosen the screw retaining the adjustment lever to the throttle shaft. ( on the side of the carburetor) the cam follower should contact the cam between the two marks. Now that part is set tighten the screw. Now go up under the flywheel and loosen the pivot block ( make sure the motor is in gear forward. Advance the throttle lever until it contacts the stop on the cylinder block then move the throttle control rod forward until the carburetor throttle plate is horizontal. Move the collar back until it touches the pivot block tighten the collar screw securely. Check your adjustment. Hope this helps.
So after the adjustments at this point. If I turn the throttle back to idle, should it not move back past the two notches

I have a96 Johnson 25 the bottom coil kept cutting out I replaced the coil, I took off both coils and when I put the the coils back on I think I crossed the wires that runs from the power pack to the coils. I took the boat out andthe motor ran fine all day until we started heading in one of the cylinders cut out. I swaped the coils around putting Te bottom coil on too and too coil on bottom to see if the top cylinder would cut out or if it the boTTom would keep cutting out. , and when I switched them I also swapped the wires back around that runs from the power pack to the coils. I went ran the boat for about an hour and ran fine. Does it matter which coil those wires run to and would that cause the one of the cylinders to stop firing or to misfire?
i have same motor. it runs fine at idle but on the lake it sputters at high speed and lacks power.When i got it the idle jet was all the way in, had to turn it out 2 1/2 turns to run. It is electric start and removing the carb is a real pain.
Took it out today and it cruises great but given throttle it has a slight vibration. cant get to optimal speed. compression is great. timing issue ? tomorrow i will check my settings on this video. 16 ft john boat. not a tiller motor.

I have the exact engine, however after a carb rebuild and new primer my engine won't idle without sputtering. And it ran on one cylinder until it warmed up. Is that a solenoid pack? I changed the spark plugs and that didn't help.
Before you start buying a lot of parts i would do some reading. The engine could be in S.L.O.W Be cause of bad temperature switch. Check your coils when your engine is running on one cylinder is it getting spark to plug. I did just what you are doing with my evinrude 225, replace the computer and that was not it. I can do a lot of testing for what the marina cost to do it for me. I got my hands on a good service manual. I do all the test that they tell you to do and so far i have always found my problem. Sometimes it two or three things all at once. Sorry i have not had the problem you have to just tell you what to do.

SLOW is a warning system which gradually limits engine speed to approximately 2000 rpm when engine temperature exceeds 180 F and resume normal operation at 155 F and engine must be slowed to an idle. Temperature switch is the tan wire try unplug and run engine. It could be a diode in the wiring harness.

Have a 61 evinrude lark 3. I’ve struggled to get it running all summer long and haven’t been able to use my first boat I’ve owned because it. Issues right now include high idle upon start and then it will eventually die or I bring the throttle back down to a lower idle and it just dies. I have cleaned and rebuilt both the carb and fuel pump, including the fuel filter and replacing the float in the carb. I have replaced most of the fuel lines. Crazy thing is when I first bought it, I was able to get it up an running and stay at a lower idle without dying.

I know that a lot of things can cause that motor to do that. Are the fuel lines in good condition. What kind of fuel tank are you using. Check and see if the fuel line is sucking air at the connectors. If you are using a portable tank do you have it in the boat. The fuel pump can only suck fuel about 24 inchs vertical.
@@OmFishing I’m don’t think it’s the tank cause the bulb gets firm without issue. It travels up the line to the motor. I’ll take a look at it just in case. I have an older steel tank. I’m gonna spend spend some time taking a look in the manual to troubleshoot more.
So for the idle you adjust right at the cable?
That is correct.
My 6hp envinrude idle up and down wen on high speed I rebuilt carburetor and clean it still ride rough.
I would check to see if the engine is running to cooling. My motor was running to cool and I replaced the thermostat and it ran much better.
My outboard is sneezing in low idle and shuts off . Cant figure out I rebuilt the carburetor already. 1989 evinrude 30hp any suggestions???
When you say sneezing if you are saying that it blows gas back through the carburetor you could have a bad reed valve. Are all the gaskets good? You are at the point little details are important. Spark plugs, I change mine twice a year need it or not, Clean fuel, I run a good fuel water separator.
Om Fishing no it’s sneezing through the exhaust. Sometimes it’s immediately when it turns on. & engine shuts down right away. Or a couple seconds later.
@@cramos6638 I would make sure the linkage is set correctly. Make sure that the timing is set in the right place. That is what it sounds like to me.
Something I just saw in the video is that the small linkage on carb. at top of linkage at beginning of video is not popped into the plastic piece properly.Little cut outs for linkage to go in.Not sure if you corrected that or not.

Your welcome.Your videos are very informative.Not sure I would be brave enough to tear a lower unit apart on my 20hp Johnson.Hope I never have to.No gear oil in it when I bought it and guy either new and did not tell me or he had no clue.Hope it is not worn out.Works so-far!O-ring is seeping slowly on prop shaft hub so may have to do that and put shaft seals in.Just converted it to 25hp by installing bigger intake on it.
I would just keep a close eye on the oil for a while.
Is the engine making a knocking noise in the video while you were adjusting it.Thought I could here something while you were turning the screw..Mine was making a knocking when I was adjusting and when I was throttling up.shut it down and waiting to run it in water.knocking was loud and intermittent.
I did not here it, but when you start to get it lean it does make a different sound. I don't think it would be good to run to long like that.
Mine sounded like that on the muffs and the noise is a Lean Sneeze.Sounds bad when your on muffs.Took mine to the river/boat ramp only to try and tune. Sounded much better.I converted my 20hp to a 25hp with an intake can't wait to test it for real.O-ring on lower unit seeping too.Always something on these old motors.

Flywheel nut torque for the 20 to 30 hp 100-105 FT LBS and as far as holding the flywheel i have a strap wrench.
I wish you were here!my Tomos 4.5 out board motor linkage is so strange to me!I have it running but the choke has to be almost closed pulled out it’s more like a weed whacker motor no timing advance.If the choke is open it stalls.if the choke is closed it will not let the throttle operate.it seems all backwards.did you or anyone ever work on a Tomos outboard?

5:45 so u fully open carb when ur throttle cable is not tensioned. and when u turn throttle handle carb cannot open any further and then u have full power all the time. Or am i missing something ?
Check out my video on Evinrude Service Bulletin that might show it a little better. Checking the adjustment. The carburetor throttle plate must be exactly horizontal when the throttle lever is fully advanced.
@@OmFishing when i do that, and turn gas handle my timing almost goes all the way to the end before carb starts to open.
The linkage adjustment and synchronization. The adjustment that I was trying to show was when you advance the throttle by moving the throttle control lever as soon as the cam follower starts to move, the cam follower should be between the two marks. With that setting the engine should start and run better. If it is not I showed how I changed mine. My video the Service Bulletin shows this a little better. I also talk about adjusting the linkage even a little more. To adjust the cam follower loosen the screw retaining the adjustment lever to the throttle shaft. Slide the adjustment lever up or down to make the adjustment. {linkage screw on the side of the carburetor). Then advance the throttle lever until it contacts the stop on the cylinder block. Move the throttle control rod forward until the carburetor throttle plate is horizontal. Move the control rod collar backward until it touches the pivot block. Tighten the collar screw securely. Then Check your adjustment.
@@jontsit I made this look way to hard. Just advance the throttle until the cam follower is between the to marks. Then loosen the screw retaining the adjustment lever to the throttle shaft. ( on the side of the carburetor) the cam follower should contact the cam between the two marks. Now that part is set tighten the screw. Now go up under the flywheel and loosen the pivot block ( make sure the motor is in gear forward. Advance the throttle lever until it contacts the stop on the cylinder block then move the throttle control rod forward until the carburetor throttle plate is horizontal. Move the collar back until it touches the pivot block tighten the collar screw securely. Check your adjustment.
I have watched this video a few times and am confused on where the throttle handle should be turned to when the roller is lined up on the marks.
Here is what i went by. The book says Advance the throttle by moving the throttle control lever until tip of the amplifier begins to move. At this point, the cam follower should contact the cam between the two marks. i did not use a amplifier i just watched when the linkage.
Its when the plate in the carburetor starts to move.
show how to change the crank shaft? if you can then if not its ok .....the very tip of my crank shaft is stripped to the 3rd row my fly wheel nut cant even go on but im waiting for my tap and die kit but a experienced mechanic said i "probably" wont find the right size so i may need to change the crank shaft its scary to rip apart the whole motor hey come fix it up for me ok? lol jk but any thoughts or advice?
Did you get the crank shaft fixed yet. If so share how you did it.
Will this cause my johnson 25 to cough/miss at higher rpms

The screw on the throttle control rod that holds the collar in the correct place. That is the collar control rod screw.

At 3:10 when you slide the throttle handle it seems to have locked in quite nicely. Mine refuses to pop onto the 2 round clups. Any hints as to why?

The only thing I did was a little grease. They were not new clips. I did make sure I had it turned the same way it came off.
@@OmFishing I'm thinking the twist nob on the end is causing me the issue. To me it can only slide down with the white line in the start position. It just won't go. Thanks for the reply.
